Not surprising there's a lot of guys who just can't properly evaluate skating ability. Pretty sure all these people in 2016 were wowed by Tyson Jost's skating as well. Dater interviewed an NHL scout who called Jost a "scout killer" and he was STILL calling Jost a good skater. :shakehead

What is the point of this post? To show me that I'm correct in that people view differently? That I'm wrong in this? That I'm right and those people are dummies?

Yeah Jost was well regarded skating wise.

Funny enough... IIRC Button had both Jost and Newhook as a 3/5 in skating, which caused all sorts of an uproar and how Button was wrong. I like Button because he just calls it like he sees it with no BS (don't always agree with him though)... hard to say he's wrong there specifically.

No. It's your need to confront people and mock them with this bump. It's worth you knowing that they're not making things up.

It would be a lot easier for you to chestpound, if you didn't say practically every single prospect is a bad skater. And moreover, resist the need to get in front of everyone who might disagree. It's not clear whether you're getting off more on thinking you're right or confronting everyone.

Oh man… hit a nerve I guess.

I don’t say every prospect is a bad skater. Not even close. Just call skating as I see it.

They do seem like theyre part of the same cottage industry as Friedman, Lebrun, etc, albeit less elevated. But they exist because of a need/appetite. And people mostly want good news. Does it work in their favor to point why 2/3 of the first rounders will be huge disappointments?

"Just calling it like you see it" is the reason for the necro bump? That doesn't seem to square.

What nerve?
I bumped because we talked about Newhook in a thread for a couple pages and went back and read this one.

What nerve? You posted a whole page of snippets from his draft year to prove it is okay to think he’s a good skater

There’s definitely some groupthink when it comes to talent evaluation. A guy like Jarmo who has his own ideas seems to have an edge, prime example being Puljujarvi.

On the other side you can go too far like Chayka. Which I 100% respect sticking to your guns, but he missed far too often in doing so.

Oh I’ve taken Chayka to task more than a few times. He totally Galaxy-brained two drafts in a row. If he had just taken the best player available both times the Yotes would be so much better off.

I respect the whole idea of taking the guy you believe in and support it. They just simply were not the right calls. Live by the sword, die by the sword. And yeah consensus would have them in a better spot.

Like some have mentioned before, Newhook's hockey IQ is just low. I always seem to notice him either:

1. Not make the correct play with the puck on his stick and the other team gets possession.

2. Try to skate it with the puck and create room, which never seems to work in his favor.

3. Looking lost when he doesn't have the puck.

I don't know how much more time we can give him. He's been on the 1st line, the 2nd, 3rd, and I think he's on the 4th line now. I swear Neito stands out more during the games in a positive way.

I still believe in Barrett Hayton.
I think Hayton is a legit NHL player and has a decent shot at being a top 6 center. Not sure he’s ever going to be a #1 that he was picked to be.

He has looked great since Christmas. If he plays like that going forward, he’s a 1C. Maybe not an elite one, but capable.

As I read through the negative assessments of Newhook on this thread I kept thinking y'all were talking about Compher.

Now, I'm not saying Newhook doesn't deserve the criticism, I'm just noticing it fits more that one current Avs roster player. And the second one earns far more gelt.

I just don’t see how Compher can really get any criticism this year… it certainly won’t work in the playoffs, but he’s been more the fine in the 2C role this year. He’s likely going to end the season with 55-60 points and has been decent all round. The difference between him and Newhook this year is monumental.

Ehhhhhh I wouldn't say he's been "more than fine." He's a bottom six guy who's clearly been asked to do WAY too much and has been adequate considering that. But not beyond that.

A real shame, the year he finally realizes his potential as a legit 3C they have him play most of the year as a 2C instead. If they had just addressed the 2C position like they should have in the offseason he likely would've thrived in that role and no one would be complaining about him. Well...people would still be complaining about him because they hate gingers but it'd be a lot more quiet around here.

Maybe not more than fine. But the teams been performing well with JTC at 2C and JT is putting up 2C production. Now like I said it’s not gonna last in the playoffs but he’s clearly having his “Kadri” year this year.

Compher's issues have always surrounded effort level and keeping it up. This year he has been more up than down... where previous years it was the opposite. He's always gotten too much hate, but he's not a 2C either. I really feel bad for whoever locks him in with term for over $5m. That'll be a horrendous contract, but he's a key reason why the Avs have treaded water this season. Can't take that away from him.

I actually think this is who JTC is moving forward. I don't think that it's necessarily his career year.

What I do believe happened is that Jost getting traded woke Compher the f*** up. He realized his inconsistency issues were putting him in the same boat. I'm not so sure that signing his next contract will shut that down. I think he's resetting his bar, rather than having a career year.

[edit...I'm also not advocating re-signing him to be our 2C, but I actually think there's a chance of it happening.]

God… if JTC gets re-signed, this board will be a battle royale
