I have no issues with this. I've always liked Blackwood and wanted him since his rookie season. Always felt like it was between the ears for him. The natural talent was always there. Hope he puts it all together with the Avs. So far so good but I really want to see how he does against the elite teams in the NHL.

You don't think there is a chance all of our D are told to go if they think there is an opening?

If he was as good as you want him to be, he'd have a higher price tag IMO.

I do think they'll move on in the offseason if he doesn't bring back playoff Manson in a meaningful way. Nice thing is, these guys are always wanted. EJ is evidence lol.
I totally get they’re encouraged to jump into the play. But the bad pinches aren’t when he has the puck on his stick, it’s when he doesn’t that he tries to step up on a guy Nick Holden style and gets completely burned. He even did so tonight in Utah and it led to a breakaway, thankfully Blackwood made the stop.

If he keeps this up, he's making team Canada. He's extremely gifted for being a bigger goalie. Doesn't stay deep in the net like some big goalies do, moves very well in net and rebound control has been tight so far. He's giving me the "good" Keumper vibes who was great before the eye injury.

We all know about the "Avs bump" with new goalies but Blackwood gives me a lot of optimism. He's entering his prime years as a goalie and finally gets his shot on a good team to be the number one. Two years of getting absolutely shelled in San Jose and years with the rebuilding Devils. The timeline with us just fits perfectly. Seems like a perfect seize the opportunity type story line for him.

Am I alone in goalie superstition and somewhat hoping he would continue to rock the SJ gear as he’s absolutely dominating in it?

No, but it needs to be changed lol.

Should we update his current save percentage daily in the main board thread or weekly? Lol

I'm definitely bumping that thread with it at some point.

In terms of cap % the Blackwood signing isn't dramatically different from previous goalie signings the Avs have made recently:

Grubauer signed for $3.33m when the cap was at $79.5m = 4.19% of the cap

Kuemper was acquired with a $3.5m AAV (after retention) when the cap was $81.5m = 4.29%.

Georgiev signed for $3.4m aav when the cap was at 82.5m = 4.12%.

Blackwood $5.25m when the cap will be around $94m = 5.59%.

Blackwood is getting 1 - 1.5% higher than his predecessors, but the Avs are also buying some extra UFA years and thereby getting some stability in the position. Seems like a fair compromise that isn't far off the Avs usual cap allocation in net.

Moreover, they've had Francouz as the backup most of the last few seasons and he was earning $2m. Wedgewood is earning $0.5m less than him until 2026, and then Nabokov on an ELC will earn even less than Wedgewood, which will obviously lower the % spent on backups relative to recent years as well.

For example, in the cup year Kuemper + Francouz cost a combined $5.5m, which was 6.74% of the cap. In 2025/26 Blackwood ($5.25m) + Wedgewood $1.5m) will cost a combined $6.75m, a combined 7.18% of the cap (estimated at $94m). So a difference of less than 0.5% spent on goalies, which is hardly a significant shift in philosophy relative to the cap.

Still different enough to indicate a change in philosophy IMO.

Here's how they would match up, using the term, cap percentage, and this year's upper limit on the cap. The three guys before got very similar AAV's and also term aside from Kuemper.

Grubauer - 3 x $3,687,200
Kuemper - 1 x $3,775,200
Georgiev - 3 x $3,625,600
Blackwood - 5 x $5,250,000

Can you do the same thing, but using next years projected cap (upper and lower projections)? Those would be more relevant seeing as that is when Blackwood's contract actually starts.

Slight uptick with the $92.4M number we heard recently, but I still think it shows a change in philosophy.

Grubauer - 3 x $3,871,560
Kuemper - 1 x $3,963,960
Georgiev - 3 x $3,806,880
Blackwood - 5 x $5,250,000

You make a fair point with the cap in his year 1, but I also think it matters when you actually signed, since you don't have future comps to use in negotiations.

Thanks for compiling that.

With the cap continuing to rise over the course of Blackwood's contract (which is longer than any of the other three goalies on the list) the difference will get smaller and smaller too.

That's the beauty of that contract. Goalies age well through that time frame. It's already dirt cheap if he continues to play anything like he currently is..

Strike while the iron is hot 🔥

Good starters 7/8M top end goalies 11M

We over here with Blackwood at 5.25M dancing around the fire.

This is reassuring, 5 years is still wild though, but one cup would is all it takes
