Confirmed with Link: Avs acquire Casey Mittelstadt for Bo Byram

Agreed... their whole defense is basically LD now and while Dahlin has shown he can play there at a high level... he's also shown he'd better on the left. I think one of Power, Samuelsson or Byram will be moved this summer.
Which is kind of bizarre.

Samuelsson is the type of defenseman they need more of. Power was a recent 1st overall and they just traded for Byram. I don’t think their plan is to trade anyone. They most really be sold on one of them being able to play the right side well.

With the upcoming draft loaded with defense, I can’t see Byram’s value being any better.

I'm not at all. I'm fine with it for the reasons you mentioned. I don't get overly emotional about these things, unlike 80% of this place. I'm just making points why I disagree it was the best move.

Do you disagree that Mitts won't cost somebody else if he's signed long term and Landy comes back?
Anybody they would have gotten as a proper 2c would be at the cost of a roster player, likely multiple. To fix the hole, players were always going to be let go. Such is the life of a currently-in-contention and cap strapped team.

Not sure why you need to keep doing this sky is falling strawman, just because I'm calmly making points about why I disagree with it?

Obviously I didn't mean lose both Lehky and Manson, I meant Lehky or Manson. If anything I moved the goalposts closer to you with that, not me.

Adding Landy isn't a factor in the trade. That will or won't happen anyway. The factor is who they may lose now, because of the trade.

Which maybe they won't have to lose someone big, or maybe they win the Cup and it's all worth it. But lets not act like it's nothing, or act like I'm overreacting when I'm not.

Feels like you're making a bigger deal out of my opinion, than I am about the trade.

Be reasonable tomorrow, right now we just filled that 2C slot for our 4/5D, and it isn't a rental. The Cup is the goal lol.

So who would you rather have; Kadri at his deal, JTC on his last year's deal, or Mittelstadt as a pending RFA?
Remains to be seen and based off Middlestadts play and ask, but Mittlestadt in a vacuum.

Let's go win a Stanley Cup!

I would probably think Kadri is the most talented of any of them as well.

Mittlestadt seems to be in the Duchene category. Doesn't look super amazing out there, but comes away with a couple of points at the end of the night. That's what I got whenever I watched him play, granted Buffalo has always been awful ever since he was drafted there.

I think they just went for pure asset value and will figure the movement out later.

So who would you rather have; Kadri at his deal, JTC on his reasonable contract (before UFA status), or Mittelstadt as a pending RFA?

Depends on the goal. Win a Cup THIS year? Kadri. Have the best -4-5 year option? Fatty. Want me to replace a TV? Compher.

"Hopefully for the future" is what Ritchie is for. What purpose does he serve now that 2C and 3C are locked up?

These were their short term options:

Adam Henrique + Sam Carrick + Ty Taylor (G)
25 goal 57 point pace - Ducks 2 best PKers (2:34 + 2:40) - 52.9% on faceoffs
Traded for Late 1st + 4th + conditional 5th if Oilers win the Cup

Casey Mittesdadt
19 goal 62 point pace - Not a Pker (0:07) - 47.1% on faceoffs
Traded for Bo Byram (4th overall pick)
Frankly, I just don't trust Henrique to be a good enough 2C in the playoffs. Yes, he is playing well this season, but he's 34 years old and hasn't notched a 50 point season since 17/18. Him having a good year on a bad team is highly suspicious to me. As far as I'm concerned he could regress back to being a 3C at any moment, that's just not good enough and I would have been very mad if they had paid that price for him.

Mittelstadt >>> Henrique as an acquisition. We paid a hefty price but I think it's worth it.

The idea of Byram is just so much better than the reality of Byram. The reality of Byram today, and for the last couple seasons just hasn't been there. This is far from an infallible source, but it really shows the picture quite well.

Yep. Byram’s been legit awful this year. To get a player of Mittlestadt’s caliber while Byram is playing this poorly is tremendous work by the Colorado front office.

Byram should be better than what he’s shown this year, but it’s for too risky to hang onto him because his value could have gone down even more if he doesn’t rebound.

And obviously the Avs had no hope of contending with RYJO at 2C.

I need to learn more about Mitts but IMO this extended the window another year. I'm so incredibly pumped. Like others have said I think the timing is a better late than never, should've been done sooner.

That said they gained even more cap and can keep adding, plus all the prospects they have kept so far. Man.... Let's keep adding.

I've been the biggest Naz fan in here, but I did not want him at 7 x $7M. Those last years would be terrible. If Mitts turns out to be the real deal, offer him something in the 8 x $6 AAV. That said any salary discussions need to come after Landy's situation is settled once and for all. As for JTC, I think Mitts is the better player today, with the gaponly widening over the next 5 to 8 years.

So chalk me up for Mitts
