No one is denying it's a high price. But every year is unique and it's clearly a sellers market. You can't compare deals year to year always. Just because it's a sellers market you can't afford to waste a year of Nate and Cale's prime, especially on Cale's and Necas' current deals. You make the trade to put your team in the best position to win and fill the hole. That's what was done.

I know it's Hockey's Future board but people are way too concerned about future assets. As others have mentioned we have players to trade to recoup some of those later on (Colton, Manson)

Can you tell me about Ritchie?

Very talented centre who has the projection to be a #2 centre in the NHL. Very offensively gifted and has high IQ and passing ability. He can dish it and shoot it, but he tends to pass the puck a lot like Alex Tanguay. I don't think he will ever fix that, but he is an all-around offensive force. Defensively, he was horrible and why he was sent down. He will never be a strong defensive player, but a lot of his mistakes will be teachable.

His bread and butter is his wrist shot. Give him a clean look and he’s usually money. Peak Brock was quicker (both hands and skating); but again he’s only marginally declined.

My only gripe with him is that he has the tendency to float and disengage—this has been a long standing issue. He also shies away from contact. His fluid skating, accurate shot, and offensive IQ will fit nicely with the Avs behind that loaded top line.

I was rooting for the Avs before this trade, and well, that obviously hasn’t changed.

Between Necas MacK and Nelson entire portions of the Avs top 6 will disappear during the right checking of the Winnipeg Jets.

Ritchie is smooth like butter with the puck. Needs to work on using his size and body positioning.

Has slick hands. Not a great skater but has good enough speed.

That said, he does lack foot speed. A lot of our more prominent junior hockey watchers have observed that plays an eerily similar game to Dylan Strome, but not the Strome you currently see in Washington.

If he puts it all together, you've probably got your 2nd line center for the next decade.
