Even if he did people would complain. I saw people ragging on him for being out on Saturday night. As if athletes don’t train 6-7 days a week and have some downtime. Unbelievable
That’s true, and it’s dumb. There’s nothing wrong at all with him hanging around and having fun in his downtime. People hold these guys to unrealistic standards. I don’t think he should train 24/7, heck That would probably be bad for him. What I want as a fan is hope, because right now what can give me that. If I see Matthews and Marner and nylander in the gym grinding, even if it’s just a 10 second clip of them shooting a puck in a facility, it’ll start to bring me some confidence as I’ll be able to look at them and point at an example of them working hard. I know these guys also feel the weight of losing 5 rounds in a row, so I don’t think saying things like “they suck” anymore really helps enforce any change, or strikes them with confidence, with the cards our fanbase has been dealt, we just need some faith because it’s the only thing we can do/have right now

I get that but Nylander shows up jacked every year except the holdout year. Matthews showed up in unbelievable shape at the beginning of the season. Only issue really is Marner

And hopefully Keefe is gone. He doesn’t even match lines in the playoffs then wonders why our stars get shutdown. I’ve never seen worse coaching
Shanahan too, the whole lot. You can't have the tank they did and spend the money they did for 6-8 years of no playoff round wins.

Ya that is fair.
Matthews has gained and recently cut his weight. Looks significantly better since draft
Nylander has put a decent amount of weight and muscle on since draft day
Marner needs to get some meat and muscle on his bones, IMO he isn’t going to be successful in the playoffs at his current weight. Take in he is nylanders height but weighs almost 20 pounds less. Marner at his current weight may be too weak on the puck come playoff time, where a bit of holding and grabbing is let go. Maybe putting on some muscles and pushing 180-185 would make him more effective and even inspire confidence in himself

Marner may be in the best shape of all of them. The notion that any of them don’t put in the off season work is pretty silly. They all do.

Marner was required / able to play more than matthews or Nylander during both the regular season and the PO.

The marner insults are getting worse and worse.

I get that he deserves some criticism for his playoff performance but some of the stuff posted is border line Pejorative Slured.

Why is marner the issue? Do you think he doesn't train during the off season?
Because out of all of our rebuilding prospects he’s shown the least amount of development. Yeah big deal you have a clip of him doing ONE SLED PUSH

Training is about consistency. How many days did he train at 90%+ his working capacity

This post basically just shows that you don’t know a lot about the gym

Did you read what I said? No where did I even hint that they don’t work hard, we all know they do. My post was about marners physical weight maybe being a thing that holds him back.

He’s currently 6’0” and 175pounds, that seems light, especially for a professional athlete. Compare him to nylander who’s also 6’0” and he is 196lbs. Nylander looks stronger on the puck, Matthews has always looked strong on the puck, Tavares has to be strong on the puck. Marner doesn’t have the Mcdavid/Mackinnon speed to breakaway from defenders like them. I just proposed that if he put weight on than maybe something will change come playoff time.

What does his TOI have to do with our success in this series?

Marner was never required to play more. It was due to our GM and Coach, both of their ineptitude caused it. We had very little real depth, chose vesey Simmonds and Boyd over Perry, our coach never changed lines and never actually tried different 5v5 tactics.

Also, there’s an argument to be made that marners TOI is one of the reasons we lost. He didn’t need to play 24-25 minutes a game when Spezza and Galchenyuk were producing more than him. He shouldn’t have needed to be killing as many penalties. Playing 24-25 minutes is defencemen minutes, trying to do that and be a dynamic offensive winger on top of that is a lot and could’ve been too much to handle. Same with Matthews.

Can Marner just works on his shot. You really can’t sit here and defend him for working on his shots bc his shots is still below average.

He does work on his shot. Probably just accept that it's not going to get much better than it is now.

What's preventing him from getting his shot to an average top-6 level? Nobody is expecting it to be elite, just good enough that other teams bother covering him instead of double teaming Matthews. I genuinely can't think of another high end playmaker with a worse shot than him.

Lmao you have no idea what marner does for training. Clearly he works out hard or he wouldn't be capable of the things he does.

Marner is the only leaf with a 90+ point season. Nylander had a good 7 game playoffs and now for some he's leap frogged a player who is much better.

But leaf fans are going to leaf. They can't help themselves.

Hahahahahhhaha this is what it has come to for the marner defenders.

What point are you trying to make?

A poster said that nylander and matthews are fit but that marner is the issue.

Clearly marner works out. He's under 200 lbs pushing a 600lb sled, doing 90lb single leg squats, etc.

No strength. No explosiveness. No results from training. It’s crazy how people get duped by one video lol
Don’t forget this little nugget of wisdom he said he wasn’t going to change a thing in his preparation for next year.

I'm starting to hope marner gets traded and tears the leafs a new one each time we play him.

Only 1 of our troops has reached 90 points. That same player has the most PO points since 2016.

Some leaf fans have no clue. Their insults have gotten worse and worse during the off season and its only been a month lol

People love to harp on that canadian players get a free pass while europeans / americans get trashed but clearly that is false.

I didn't say marners ice time had anything to do with our (lack of) success in the PO.

The notion that marner is not working out during the summer is not based on facts or logic.

Anyways this is a matthews thread. We should be discussing how the 3rd highest paid player on the shortest term of anyone in the top ~25 had another poor playoffs. The guy has averaged about 60 points / 82 games.
