Isn't Simmonds the most obvious answer? He's got scoring touch, size, fighting skills and speed. Seems like a way better fit for the first line than Thornton to me even without the physical presence.
Both Simmonds and Marner are RW'ers. You could throw Willy up on the left, but he's also better on the right

Well, when Simmonds is back, I'd like to see him say hello to Rasmus Andersson. Like in the Original Six days, revenge is a dish best served cold.

So it sounds like the injury is still a nagging issue as well as in-game timing and rhythm.

Then why play him?

Hard to trust the Leafs at all with respect to injuries, they lie again and again.

Sounds like he'll probably need surgery in the off season and they want him in the lineup at 50% as a morale boost.

Yeah my conspiracy theory is that he’ll need surgery on it but the recovery would be too long and would take him out for the season.

f*** Andersson. I hope Simmonds scrambles his brain next time we see Calgary with him in the lineup.

Rasmus Andersson is a nasty customer who is really dangerous with his board work, like his boarding play on Stutzle. In the old days, a Gary Roberts/Darcy Tucker forecheck would lay an appropriate beating on him.

Like so:

Now now, we cannot have any such retaliation because we might get a penalty and give up a goal. Talk about short sightedness.

Agreed. Sadly it spells the end of any hopes of winning the Cup this year.

I would prefer that he just gets the surgery now so that he won't miss the first few months of next season.

He can provide morale boost from the stands.

That's beautiful to watch. Hopefully we can bring in some goons next time against Calgary.

Honestly, this is sort of been a thing with him every year. Why do we keep letting him come back into the lineup if he's not 100%? He's not even half the player when he's playing injured so he might as well rest. Is Leafs medical staff just stupid or do they just let the players do what they want like wtf

If it wasn’t obvious from Auston Matthews’ lack of offensive production over three games since returning to the Leafs’ lineup from a hand injury, the centre openly admits he isn’t close to fully recovered from the ailment. Kristen Shilton has more.

"In time, it's the type of injury that will heal itself," Keefe said. "He just has to work his way through it. We're fortunate to this point with everything we've been told it's not the kind of thing that will get worse. He just has to play through it a little bit, and he's doing a good job of that."

Doesn't sound like it's some sort of delayed offseason surgery type deal.

So maybe it's just a deep bruise or something like that. Painful and annoying to play with but the swelling will go down? Do we have any armchair medical opinions and insights?

This is what I mean. It makes absolutely no sense to play someone with a nagging injury who is playing at 30% when we are in first place in the middle of the regular season.

Unless... it's not something he can recover from in the medium term, and a more permanent fix is being postponed.

ok that does give me some relief, although on the other hand the Leafs keep lying about injuries.

I selfishly wanted him to stay in the lineup because I enjoy watching the stats races. Now I think it's time for him to sit out a bit and get better. If he can't shoot, his spot is probably better filled by another player and we NEED him to be healthy to have any chance at a run.

I put this squarely on Andersson. It's so obvious he re-injured it in that d-bag play into the boards.

It seems unlikely that they'd be playing Matthews risking damaging the franchise while lying to fans about it.

I will choose to feel relief without being overly suspicious. Am I just naive and don't want to know the truth because I can't handle it? Haha maybe, I'm not sure I could bear the idea of this season being down the tubes because our franchise isn't healthy.

I think I care more about Matthews looking good then I about winning tonight but in any case, GLG!!

I think a self healing, non structural injury you need to work through but limits certain movements or causes pain could be a deep bruise or something like that.

If he had linemates who could finish he would win more than one Art Ross

Marner has been carrying on like a Rocket candidate himself but his shot quality is somewhat inconsistent. Seems much improved with more zip on it. But under pressure it can still be a muffin. Thornton is struggling lately and his major chance at scoring is a garbage goal since he’s rarely in open space to be able to snipe it.
