He's gonna cost about 15m to resign. He may only score 40 this season... and we have another tough go at Tampa more than likely to escape the first round. Which means we may once again get stumped in the playoffs with no success to show.

I'm ok with it. But is everyone else ok with that?
Yes he is the face of the team and should retire the best Leaf ever

Are we sure it’s going to be $15m? I don’t think he’s going to get much more than MacKinnon really. If anyone breaks $15 it’ll be McDavid on his next contract.

Where do Maple Leafs players show up in league rankings, statistically?

Auston Matthews is first in the NHL in “defensive plays” (among forwards) by light years
I’ve written about this with Matthews before, but it’s become staggering. The stat is about stick checks, blocked shots and blocked passes, among other things, and Bergeron is second in the NHL with 231 of these “defensive plays.” Philip Danault is third with 226. Matthews has 301, 70 more than Bergeron.
It is his puck, thank you very much, he’ll take that back now.
But, yes. Kampf is 15th (13th as a per-20 stat) there, showing just how defensively active he is.

He's the absolute best player in the world and it's not really close imo. Sure mcd is flash but him and drai are not even close to how good Matthews is allround . We are so lucky to have him...

The Leafs need to make a decision very soon on the future of Matthews.

His NTC kicks in this July 1st. If an extension hasn't been agreed upon, the Leafs need to move on. They can't afford to lose Matthews to free agency like they have so many others.

Is Matthews really the future face of the franchise?

Or is he just another flash in the pan showboating woman bullier come to get rich and leave town as soon as possible?

Even if Matthews doesn't sign an extension right away on July 1, 2023, it doesn't mean he's wants to leave as a UFA or that he needs to be traded. In the most recent offseason Colorado didn't re-sign Nathan MacKinnon right away on July 13, 2022, which was the first day possible for him to have done that. He signed his extension on September 20, 2022.

So, there is a chance Matthews could sign a contract extension with Toronto after July 1, 2023, and no one should freakout if it doesn't happen on that specific day.

That's very true.

You are correct. But the situations and circumstances are also very much different. MacKinnon just won a cup with Colorado. I don't think his staying with the team was ever in much doubt. The Leafs haven't won a thing.

This is what "we can and we will" has dissolved into: hoping the team wins a single playoffs series before the Matthews contract expires.

Personally I think Matthews should approach the Coyote's owner, Alex Meruelo, and see about getting a piece of the ownership pie.

I think it would be good for Matthews, good for the NHL, good for the fans, good for the Coyotes, good for pretty much everyone.

Except the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Didn’t take long for your act to wear thin.
Congrats I guess.

Another?

What other star has walked out of Toronto as an UFA?

I'm sorry have I said something to upset you?

Everything I have said is true. Some people can't handle the truth

Are you honestly going to try and tell me that there hasn't been a lot of discussion around Matthews contract?

My description may have been a little harsh, but still accurate. If Matthews was a real man he would have set an example and entered into a PARS program. That didn't happen.

ML$E presents itself as progressive, juries a woke spokesperson as it's GM. This is the results.

It's contradictory to appeal to the public as setting the example against mysogny and then baby the team's star player and write it off as an act of childish drunken behaviour.

It doesn't work that way.

These guys want elite money. They want the spotlight and fame and everything that goes along with it. They get held to a higher standard.

Maybe I'm wrong. I expect more from these star athletes that make millions upon millions to play a game every year.

You're probably right though.

It's just me.

lol come on man, McDavid is obviously better than Matthews.
Matthews might have a season here or there where he can be the better player(so far only one) but McDavid is that guy

Matthews won't sign with Arizona, so don't even give that a second thought of it happening.

He's not in the situation John Tavares was when he left the Islanders.

its still possible even if its extremely low. but people been speculating this since we drafted him in 2016. it wont stop until he re-signs.
just wait till the offseason. once we can actually re-sign him. how many days in do you think before everyone claims he's walking?

My first guess would be Curtis Joseph when he signed with Detroit in July 2002.

Like I said before last year Nathan MacKinnon didn't sign his contract extension with Colorado the first day possible. So, there is a chance Matthews does the same thing and still signs an extension on a day after July 1, 2023.

A poster more dramatic than Mess...who would've thought.

A lot of that comes from Leafs haters who want to see Matthews leave Toronto as a UFA.

Before he signed his current contract, they wished that Arizona would be able to sign him as an RFA. However, that never happened since he re-signed on February 5, 2019, and never became an RFA.

I don't think so. He's faster.. Ok.. He has carried drai to a hart and made him more than the 70 point guy he would have been. I mean don't get me wrong he's awesome. I prefer matthews. He's defence alone is god tier and adds sixty goals to that? What he's done before he was hurt and playing hurt was Mario lemieux shit. I think it's much closer than people on the mains want.

they were so pissed too.. Haha. The narrative was " not a fifty goal scorer, not a hundred point player" get they wanted him out of here bad.. Lmfao.
