Whats weird about all these analytical models showing how good he is........is that he has a huge drawback none of the other top players have.

He doesnt draw penalties and the models hold that against him.

He's just never going to get the benefit from the refs because he doesn't really bitch and whine to the refs about calls, never goes down easily or embellishes, and just fights through infractions.

Okay so guys I just did some quick calculations because I was curious to see how Matthews past 50 games compared to Gretzky's 50 in 39 era adjusted.

Gretzky had 1.28 goals per game during a time when league scoring was 3,95 per game.

Matthews has 1.02 when it's 3.12 - and this includes shootout goals which don't count for players stats so this adjustment actually doesn't favour Matthews...

And it turns out Gretzky's 1.28 adjusts to 1.01

Almost posted this on the main boards but we all know how that would go lol

one of the few times I've seen him lose it at the referees was when Chychrun held his stick in OT and then scored for the Coyotes.

Remember when Auston was 10 goals back?.. now up by 8.

What a monster year he’s having.
Cue dream sequence music. I remember predicting........... :) :) :)

Think about how white hot his streaks have been over the years, and how ice cold he has been coming off injuries. He scored 47 in 70 a couple of years ago so 50 is in reach, assuming he doesn't get hurt again. Looking at the top 15 goal scorers I expect no more than 3 or 4 of them to be top 15 by year end.

Ovy, Matthews and Drai should be there at the end, and maybe McDavid. He will wake up soon but this isn't going to be his career year. I will say he gets another minor injury and 45g.

That's the one part of Matthews game which is most underrated.

There was a thread about best hands and people laughed at the idea that he was top 10 and insisted Draisaitl and several others have better hands. His stickhandling in tight literally looks abnormal with the speed and control he maintains.

plus his insane deft takeaways. just literally stealing pucks all the time from elite dmen like taking candy from a baby.

That’s strange. He’s so dominant you can’t call too many penalties or else it would be unfair lol

I love this one. Goalie looked mesmerized.

I know you are kidding, but in all sincerity as much slack as Zeke gets for being biased he is the most consistent in his opinion and right now he looks right.

 It was more irony about the bias of eye test when zeke’s about the advanced stats.

I did the real calculations, it's actually 3.06 for Matthews and 4.01 in Gretzky's 50 in 39 season (I was looking at goals against average for Gretzky's season which doesn't include empty nets)

So 1.02 > .98. Not sure yet if Gretzky has a better stretch than that on an adjusted basis.

For the Maple Leafs, it’s yet a reminder of the doomsday scenario that could be awaiting them in 2024.

That’s when Auston Matthews becomes an unrestricted free agent. And if you don’t think the Arizona native would ever leave Toronto — much less leave a team as good as the Leafs for a chance to play for his hometown Coyotes, where he would go from being a national star to a closely-guarded secret — keep in mind that there are plenty of other NHL cities that are close to the desert.

After all, Gaudreau picked a city that is two states over and an eight-hour drive from his hometown of Salem, N.J. Depending on the traffic, that’s even further than Los Angeles is from Matthrews’ summer home in Scottsdale, Ariz.

And if not Los Angeles, there’s always Anaheim or San Jose. Or even Vegas.

Any of them are closer than Toronto. The question is, two years from now will any of them be closer than Toronto currently is to winning a Stanley Cup?

That last part is why Gaudreau left Calgary in the first place. Sure, he wanted to be close to family. But it was more than that. And it was more than the money. While fans and analysts are shaking their collective heads as to why a 28-year-old would leave a team that had so much talent and so much success last season, keep in mind that Gaudreau had spent eight years in Calgary.

During that span, he had won just three playoff rounds. And with the amount of housecleaning the Flames had to do this summer, there was no guarantee that they were on the cusp of adding to that total — especially with how much better Edmonton got on Wednesday.

Suddenly, a place like Columbus, which had five first-round picks in the past two drafts, wasn’t looking so bad.

It reinforces just how important it is for the Leafs to learn from the Flames’ mistake of not procrastinating and to try and sign Matthews to an extension well before his contract expires. The earliest that can happen is July 1, 2023. But before then, the Leafs have to first show the Hart Trophy winner that Toronto is a place where Matthews can win a Stanley Cup — or at the very least, advance to the second round of the playoffs.

That makes this coming season the most important of Matthews’ career. It’s a show-me type of year for Toronto. Not just for goalies Matt Murray and Ilya Samsonov, but also for GM Kyle Dubas, who has a lot to prove in his ability to build a perennial contender.

When your "opinion" is consistently the same for years on end, that's pretty much the definition of bias.

14 hits through 3 games.

His line isn’t clicking just yet, but you can tell he’s still very engaged. Nice to see him pick up where he left off physically. The goals will come, but this adds another whole dimension to his play

Agreed, and some really hard hits too. Matthews and his line have also generated a tonne of chances, they just haven’t gone in at the normal rate. Teeny sample size though, the points will flow soon, and agreed on the physicality. He’s been hitting like this the last few playoffs, but this is the first I’ve seen of it in the regular season, he’s bringing a new level of intensity and I love it!

Nick Kypreos is at it again, saying that he’s hearing from sources that Auston Matthews leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs when his contract is over isn’t just possible, it’s potentially likely. The NHL analyst has made similar comments before, saying that he’s heard rumblings that Matthews could take off in free agency, even though a number of other sources suggest the forward loves it in Toronto and the Maple Leafs have absolutely no desire to let him bolt as a UFA.

Kypreos notes, “I think there’s a lot of people that believe [Auston Matthews] could leave.. a lot of people that I talk to on a consistent basis." Sportsnet 590 The Fan has posted these comments on their social media pages and as expected, the tweet is going viral with reactions all over the place.

Those other people Kipper is talking about are the voices in his own head.

The things media in this town will do for attention, worse than any Kardashian lmao.

No need to get overly attached to any player on this team. If Matthews leaves thats his choice and Id guess its something he will decide when the time comes and how Dubas has set up this team will matter the most. Dubas has to do his job if Matthews wont resign and get the most for him obviously. I dont think Dubas is a quality GM in this league so I wonder how that will play out.

Matthews isn't going anywhere.

He may not retire a Leaf, but he's not leaving. I just don't see it.
