Some stats I was looking at. Ovechkin scored his 300th career goal in his 476th game played.

Matthews sits at 271 goals after playing 432 games.

He needs 29 goals in 43 games to beat Ovechkin's mark.

I think he's about to go off, it just feels like it. He's been all over the ice lately and you notice him even though he's not scoring that much.

If he scores 42 this season (I believe), he will have more raw goals than OV in the exact same amount of seasons. In way less ice time played and way less PP opportunity.

To be fair to hyper I listened. He made it pretty clear that no one knows what he is thinking. He said that because Matthews is Playing it close to the vest people are concerned that he might leave

He never actually says I talked to sources who say he is going. Just they are nervous/speculating

Which is reasonable. He said he thought MAYBE his play was because leaving was weighing on him.

But he does say he doesn’t know. And he is specilating

Matthews isn't going anywhere.

He may not retire a Leaf, but he's not leaving. I just don't see it.

It's so obvious how much he loves this team, the city, and his teammates. Maybe we're all wrong and he will leave but I can't see it. I truly believe he wants to spend his career here - he'll easily go down as the best Leaf of all time and I think he knows that.

He's staying.

He's not leaving the opportunity to be the best player in franchise history for the most iconic team in the NHL. There's a better chance of McDavid coming here after his deal is over than Matthews leaving.

You mean McDavid is not going to break all of Gretzky's records as an Oiler? :sarcasm:

Needs to be better. Not as much as the forwards outside the big 4. Bunts gets a pass.

Auston in not having a Hart Trophy like season, never mind the Rocket.

Shocking fact .

NHL scoring leaders.

Ex Leaf Zach Hyman as of today has only 1 goal and 1 point less than Auston Matthews.

Something tells me if Matthews was riding shotgun with McDavid his numbers might be a little inflated too.

Zach was riding shotgun with Matthews and Marner in previous seasons.

Last year Matthews had 60 goals and generally one would view Hyman as a 60ish point player on the season.

Seeing them 1 point/goal apart in scoring leaders standings after 30 games was shocking as we near mid season. But that was more a concern for Matthews below expectations, coming off a Rocket and Hart season.

Matthews is often riding shotgun with Marner or Nylander as his wingman.

Shouldn't a Leafs PP that include Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Tavares also generate a lot of scoring points among them?

Shouldn't the Oilers be an elite team with all these incredible high point scoring players they have?

The thing is, father time doesn't care about ice time or PP opportunities. If AM wants to be compared to Ovi (or others) when it's all said and done, all that matters is the goal numbers. None of the other stuff will be talked about. Nobody will care about games played or PP chances.

I get your point though. AM's talent is on par with any goal scorer ever, so far. Can he keep it up is the question. Most before him couldn't.

Of course it doesn’t. It’s looked at now because you can’t predict the end, merely point out that numerically to the same point in time, Matthews is out producing him, so he has a shot. Many things have to go right.

Statistical anomalies happen every season. Wtf is so shocking about it? He plays with McDavid and gets loads of PP time with the Oiler's top unit.

Auston Matthews after 31 games last year - > 37 points
Auston Matthews after 31 games this year - > 35 points

I actually wonder who made you a moderator sometimes. You're more like an instigator with the misleading/baiting posts.

I'm waiting for it to get into the looney territory it's on pace for.

"If the season ended right now, the Leafs would only have 44 points. Compared to 105 points (a Leaf record) in 2017, that would be over a 50% drop. Did the Leafs make a mistake choosing Dubas?"

Only 44 points? Yikes.
At least we'd have the same number of shutouts that the Oilers did throughout the entire season last year.
