I am just happy to be alive to witness what he is accomplishing. Moments like these are why the Leafs are #1 in Toronto

100%, I think a lot of people don't realize just how incredible and rare this run has been. This is something that hasn't happened in almost 30 years and we get to witness it live.

Wow. He really will challenge for 70. When I mentioned it before I was kind of joking.

Truly amazing season. Look I hate to be a downer here but I just hope it’s not all for not in that we do need to win a playoff round or two. I really think Matthews and Marner‘s disappointment last year has really pushed the duo to take this team on its back. We are likely going to break a single season point total and we may have two 100 point players with Matthew maybe breaking 60 goals. Please prove me wrong, this city and team needs to make that next step.

He truly is in god mode, and he is enjoying every second of it. You can just feel the vibe, he knows he can do anything. Not only the offensive side of the game, even defensively, and he finishes every hit like a monster. We always knew he could be a beast phisically and now he is showing this side of his game as well.

This guy is freaking scary right now. I don't think I have ever seen someone dominating every aspect of the game like he is doing it right now. I know the league has McDavid, but Matthews is scoring at a 70G pace, hitting like prime Ovechkin, playing defense like prime Kopitar and winning faceoffs like Yanic Perreault. You are not supposed to do this.

So in the last 10 days, Matthews has:

Hit 50 goals
Broke the Leafs’ goal scoring record
Scored 51 in 50

And is about to:

Hit 100 points
Hit 60 goals
Win the Rocket

All things considered, he deserves both the Hart and Lindsay this year.

The stage is set for an all-time great season for the ages like Messier 1990 or Sakic 2001 if he combines this with a cup.

As you should be. The one thing dampening this for me is the the old man isn't here to enjoy. He'd have LOVED this!

I caught the Leaf bug big time in the 58-59 season and have watched ever since. I believe Matthews is the best Leaf I have ever seen in that six decades plus of Leaf fandom. I also think it is likely that he is better than the Greats from before my time whom I know only from statistics and my late father’s stories. It is indeed a privilege to be alive to see him.

*Set goal scoring record (in a single season) for American born players.

I've followed this team for over 50 years and I've never seen a moment like this and the Leafs have been #1 all my life even when they've sucked as they have done for much of that time. I'd say the Leafs are #1 because this is a hockey town, people here just love the game and moments like this are what this fan base deserves after so many decades of suffering. Now we just need playoff success, if that doesn't happen it's gonna take some (not all) of the shine of all this magic so let's hope the magic continues for a while yet.

Great post, very well said! I do believe you're right, I've seen Gretkzy, Lemieux and even Orr (who is my choice for GOAT) and they have all dominated to perhaps a greater degree at times but yup, the way Matthews is doing it is different. He is the real deal, the complete package unlike any I've ever seen. You could almost say that he's the perfect hockey player, like something you'd put together in a video game if you could hack it somehow.

Maybe I'm getting a bit carried away here but what Matthews is doing these days is completely ridiculous. FML I simply can not wait for the playoffs to start.

So I wonder say the Leafs go on a run and make it to round 3 and Matthews dominates like he is now. Matthews will have 60+ goals 100+ pts, played well in the playoffs, what goal post would the haters have left? None of it counts cause he hasn't won a cup? Then say they win, nope gotta 3 peat before it counts? I'm curious where it will end

Haters will always find a reason, no reason to be bothered by them whatsoever.

To me, cups have always been a team accomplishment but at the end of playing careers, they are considered when comparing the greats to each other. Fair or not, that's just the way it is. For me though, all that matters is how he plays and if he plays off the charts amazing and we lose in the playoffs because our goaltending doesn't hold up (or whatever else that's out of his control), that's hardly his fault. Hopefully we go deep for many years beginning with this year and manage to go all the way at least once during this upcoming run. :)

Best Maple Leaf goal scorer of all time, pure and simple end of sentence.

Matthews is amazing.

I've been following my Leafs since the 1960's and always seen other teams over the decades with these amazing goal scorers, and now finally Leafs have one of their own.

Matthews is our Ovechkin, Bossy, Lafleur, Kurri, Selanne, Hull etc etc.,

Now lets hope Auston can lead us the Stanley Cup.

Do not want to jinx him, but IMO he has won the Rocket and the Hart. If not for McDavid and slow start and missing 5 games, he probably wins the Art Ross as well.

From what I have been hearing, I think he is shooting for Conn Smythe and the holy grail.

There are zero arguments that favor anyone besides Matthews winning the Hart & Lindsay this year.

A .02 PPG difference that could disappear before the end of the season but even if it does not, that .02 covers:

-Matthews being way better than the field against top competition.
-Matthews scoring nearly 30% more of his points via goals. Goals > Assists.
-Matthews being better than McDavid, Draisaitl and Huberdeau defensively.

People always talk about McDavid being an amazing player and rightly so but they never talk about his line as a whole because it's not comparable to Matthews.

Whether it be Matthews Nylander Hyman, Matthews Marner Hyman, Matthews Marner Bunting...they are always one of the best lines in hockey.

Neither McDavid or Draisaitl are players who make other linemates better. Their next best linemate has less than 50 points while both these guys are over 100. Hyman is playing on the PP which he never did for Toronto outside of the 2nd unit and he's still about the same as he was on Toronto with worse defensive numbers.

All of the above with Leafs getting screwed for PP opportunities compared to other top scoring teams in the league. If Leafs got the same PP opportunities as top scoring team in the League...

Matthews would have cleaned house... Ross, Rocket, Lindsey, Hart, and... (Smythe :crossfing)

No matter what anyone says on either side of the border he is an all time elite player! No one can ever tarnish that, take the time to drink in and appreciate it, they come along once maybe twice in a lifetime. As a lifelong Habs fan I know that all too well. Sure wish he was in our sweater!!
