The Ovi vs Matthews thread is done but I wanted to share this because posters would say Matthews isn't dominating like Ovi:

Matthews gpg - 0.87
Difference between Matthews and #2 in gpg = 0.87- 0.70 = 0.17
Difference between Matthews and #10 in gpg = 0.87 - 0.58 = 0.29

Ovechkin gpg - 0.79
Difference between Ovi and #2 in GPG = 0.79 - 0.66 = 0.13
Difference between Ovi and #10 in GPG = 0.79 - 0.49 = 0.30

He's having a better season statistically and relative to his peers than peak Ovechkin. This is a historical run for Matthews

The best goal scoring season in the last 25 years is Ovi's 65 in 07-08. Its long odds but that is what I am thinking about for AM. 61 would be second best and a great achievement in its own right.

It seems like yesterday that Matthews was tied with Draisaitl at 49. This dude is ridiculously good at depositing the puck in the net.

It's this, but he has improved so many of his tools this season. He is separating opponents from the puck, changing his skating pace on a dime and just freezing goalies at will. It's crazy to think he is still in his early 20s and will likely be the top-scoring American down the road, until another phenom comes after him.

And he might hit 100 points too....which is also remarkable.

We officially have the best peak goal scorer since Lemieux.

I'm just enjoying the mental gymnastics going on elsewhere to try and discredit his pure dominance .

On different social medias, the arguments tonight are, "it's not 50 in 50, it's only 50 in 50 at the start of the season".

They will do every little thing they can to undermine anything Matthews does this season. Then if you throw stats at them and back up your retorts and debates with statistical facts, they always go to the same drawing board.

"Playoffs this, playoffs that". Talking about a regular season accomplishment and like flies to feces, they always push the conversation to that. Like what he's doing doesn't count or matter because of not advancing in the playoffs in the past.

I used to just laugh at it, but the actual triggered and rage that ensues from many of these Leafs haters is on other levels I've not seen before. It's hilarious to see them get all worked up, but holy shit!

Whether its official or not, this is the 2nd time in his career no one has done since Lemieux. The first was being the first D+1 rookie to score 40 goals in their rookie season. The second is getting 50 goals in 50 games, Regardless if its officially recognized or not, what he has done this year is absolutely ridiculous, and something people haven't seriously thought about happening in years. Any time you accomplish something that people say hasn't been accomplished since arguably the most naturally talented player of all time has done it, that deserves a ton of respect.

I was probably one of the highest people on Matthews pre-draft. I thought he was the best prospect outside of McDavid since arguably Crosby (Stamkos, Eichel, and Tavares all had arguments). He's exceeding the higher level of my expectations individually (part of that is league scoring related), but him and Marner together despite our struggles at times are the reason I keep watching. Two truly special talents, that complement each other so well. Not only is Matthews scoring at a career high rate, he's getting more assists than every because Marner has taken steps forward as a shooter, and Marner is scoring more goals as Matthews pulls more players towards him and becomes a better passer. The craziest part of Matthews season is, he's not shooting a percentage that is out of wack for his career. It has way more to do with overall shot generation of Bunting-Matthews-Marner (with Matthews growth as a 2-way center being key, but all are important). Hoping this heater continues into the playoffs and not only will he win the Hart and the Rocket, but this small trophy named after a very key figure in the Leafs history and happens to be an award showing our previous home.

Nor would they have been before. He takes it from Syl Apps. Keon and Kennedy next.
Agree with Syl Apps. Him and Keon always 1/2 on my list, and then you throw in Horton and Clancy, Bower and Broda, Big M and Salming, Gilmour, Clark, Sundin in whatever order.. but Auston is obliterating that list. There's never been a Leaf comparing to peers in an era doing what he's doing.

And to think he started the year recovering from a serious wrist injury. Auston Matthews is a gangster.

The stats are nice but even by ye Olde eye test I ain't see nobody look like this since Mario.
Might be the best comparison, size and imposing will upon others. Relax everyone, no not as good as Mario. But the way he's scoring, ya, just not the 100 assists at the same time.

Beast mode activated. One thing I noticed between this year and last season, AM looks hungrier bc last season there were times he just floated or wait for MM to feed him the puck or even mail it in after a goal or two but this season, he is always looking for more.
