It's always the same f***ing people. snipes, Sasha Orlov, WetcoastOrca, Tad Mikowsky and MessierII are the other common culprits who just can't help themselves. Then you have that Habs fan beauchamp who has literally made it his life's purpose to stir shit up with Leafs fans for over a decade on these boards.

Why are y'all still seeing their posts? I blocked most of those guys like a decade ago lmfao

The crazy thing is that if he has big games against Montreal & Buffalo, 70 goals isn’t entirely out of the question. Unlikely for sure, but certainly possible.

I would just like to point out Matthews' and Marner's dramatic unprecedented overpayment.
Let's rehash this after playoffs.

They both had great seasons last year and disappeared come playoffs. Of course they look hungrier this year and Mitch is throwing his body around.. but playoffs is where I'd judge there salaries.

Nobody cares about individual awards when they got all the minutes they want to achieve it. Playoffs are the measuring stick for me.

I can seriously see Auston doing those cold stare “are you not entertained?” goal celebrations in opposing buildings as they become his signature celly.

so badass… that OT goal last night was the most beastly goal ever.

Watching Matthews absolutely victimize Tyler Seguin was a profound catharsis that I didn't know I needed until it happened

That was nonsense after scoring the ot goal...hes like acting like look at me crowd I scored that goal..im great. If he did to 75 flyers they would of beat crap out of him.
But it wasn't the 75 Flyers. Welcome to 2022

23 goals in his last 20 games. It's not to be expected but it wouldn't be out of line with the rate he's been going lately.

So many highlight goals and so little time
41 assists in 66 games and on pace for 51 per 82. Matthews best playmaking season.
Marner has 31 goals in 62 games. Hes having his best goal scoring season as well. Bunting is probably a factor but still.
MM is as much AM as AM is MM

it's like they communicate telepathically always knowing where to be and where the other one will be.

I really liked Ricky Vaive as a Leaf it's just to bad he had to be here during Ballards craziest years and Gerry McNamaras' worst GM years. They had a pretty good team in 81/82 but by the time 84/85 arrived the team was a complete mess.

Hopefully the Leafs do a pre-game ceremony to honour Auston's amazing accomplishment and Vaives' broken record and Ricky himself as a former Leafs C who held the team together when Ballard was at his craziest crazy.

60 NEXT!

and join that exclusive club of 18 who have done it previously

Dennis Maruk is in that club

Nevermind just goal scoring, if Matthews had been healthy to start the year and not suspended the two games, his 1.47 PPG would put him in striking distance of Doug Gilmour's 127 point franchise record set in 1992-93.

I could care less from a salary perspective. It won't change the humor in reading that statement over and over again.

130 point pace after his first 6 games

More than anything I want the Leafs to win a round so this can all go away. I am sure it won't but one can dream.

Matthews has been great in the playoffs and had a major injury last year. Marner has had big playoffs as well.

In fact, reading comments from a lot of posters makes me scratch my head. Leafs dominate the game, can't buy a goal and they play with no heart. Two nighta later, play the same game, pucks go in and somehow it's a different team and everyone is thrilled. This year the process has been the same for almost every game. It should result in plalyoff success. Zero chance Matthews and Marner control the game as much as they did last year without more chances going in

TORONTO — Rick Vaive knew his record wouldn't stand forever.

The hometown of the Toronto Maple Leafs player to eventually surpass him was the surprise — at least until recently.

"If someone had told me 20 or 30 years ago a kid from Arizona was going to break it," Vaive said with a laugh, "I would have gone, 'Come on, you've got to be kidding.'"

That's exactly what happened four decades after the fact.

Auston Matthews snapped the tie for the most goals in a season in franchise history on Thursday when he scored for the 55th and 56th time in 2021-22– including the overtime decider — as part of a 4-3 victory against the Dallas Stars.

The 24-year-old drew level with Vaive's previous high-water mark of 54 goals, which was set in 1981-82 when he became the first Leaf to bag 50, with a hat trick Monday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

"You're looking at a generational talent," Vaive said in a Friday phone interview with The Canadian Press. "I'm happy for him. I really am."

"It's better than if some guy came in and had a lucky year and scored 55."

Vaive knows Matthews would have overtaken him a lot sooner if not for COVID-19.

Toronto's No. 1 centre and star sniper had 47 goals in 70 games when the pandemic brought an end to the 2019-20 regular season before netting 41 in 52 contests in the league's shortened 2020-21 campaign to win his first Maurice (Rocket) Richard Trophy.

Vaive had a feeling his goal record wouldn't last long a couple of seasons back when he was forwarded a video of Matthews training in the off-season.

"It was about a half an hour long. I watched it and I went, 'Holy crap. He's working like crazy,'" said the 62-year-old. "I thought, 'He's going to it do pretty soon.'

"I hope he gets to 65. Nobody's going to break that except for maybe him."

It's insane that if we were to build an all-time Leafs team, neither Gilmour nor Sundin would be the 1C.

How blessed are we to watch this special, special player.
Nor would they have been before. He takes it from Syl Apps. Keon and Kennedy next.
