Matthews was not supposed to be this good was he? I dont remember thinking he could win multiple richard trophies. But i was just a casual fan at the time

Wouldn't play him with Mitch. Wouldn't play him full PP time. Wouldn't play him more than 18-19mpg.

Absolute sabotaged his first few years.
Still pissed to this day that we got robbed of him winning the Rocket as a rookie. Beating Crosby's 44 goals would have been so easily doable with the things listed above.

I think I’ve spent 15-20ish minutes just staring at this dudes stats on hockey reference…
They get more and more amazing with each look.
Seriously had he not missed he’d be contending for the ross and 70 goals would be pretty realistic.
His advanced stats are top notch. Dude has a 64.0% CF%… 15% over relative to his team
scoring at rate of 2.4G/60
His points/60 are also tied 2nd with Mcdavid at 4.1 only behind gaudreau and huberdeau

Speaking of gaudreau, remember that thread stating gaudreau was having the best even strength season in the last 24 years? Well matthews is on pace for almost the exact same points as gaudreau on even strength.

I think I am a more skeptic Fan and don’t like to throw terms around lighlty, but I seriously cannot find a way to not give Matthews the hart

Edmonton fans think we are this excited about 100 points……but we are excited for a potential 120 points And 70 goals. That hasn’t been seen in almost 30 years

we have the 2nd best player in the league right now. let that sink in. I need to keep my expectations low for the playoffs but Mitch and Auston are making that difficult

Pretty much the only reason these powerplay arguments even need to be brought up in comparison to Ovechkin. He's putting away any doubt now about how good he is.

It's funny because most people still think rookie Ovechkin was this entirely better player than rookie Matthews. Matthews finished 2nd in goals with 2nd line usage and Ovechkin finished 3rd with almost 7 minutes of powerplay time per game lol

To be clear - there's no argument. What Matthews has done so far is insanely better than Ovechkin, because yes of course PP time matters in a huge way.

Would you really trade Auston for McDavid right now? I watch almost as many Edmonton games as Toronto and my answer is nope. Sure would be cool if he signed with us when his contract is up though.

Ovechkin had nearly double the power play minutes that Auston Matthews has had in the first six years of his career. Part of this may be due to health/injuries but this is super relevant in any nuanced discussion about goal scoring prowess between the two.
Hey don’t deny it, barring any unforeseen circumstances, he should go onto to be the greatest.

I know this sounds really stupid - but when we drafted Matthews I could see him raising the cup. The thing, is that in this vision - he is the Captain.

If John Tavares wants to go down as an absolute beauty and a beloved Leaf of all time, please do this:

Prior to Game 1 of the playoffs right after the warmup - pull all the boys and coaches into the room.

Make a speech in front of EVERYONE about what being a Leaf means to him and the privilege it is being the Leaf’s Captain.

You then casually take off your Jersey - only to have another one on underneath. This other jersey is adorned with a big “A”.

You then say…Remember that kid in the picture with his Leafs jammies on? Ya, well that kid was dreaming about winning the Cup.

He then tosses Matthews a jersey with the “C” and continues - but the only way we win this thing is with you leading the team.

This is your team and every single one of us has your f***ing back. It starts right f***ing now.

:roomerupts:

We slay the ghost of 1967 right there.

Matthews became just the fifth Maple Leafs player to have four or more hat tricks in the same season.

The others are:

Reg Noble (1917-18)
Babe Dye (1922-23 and 1924-25)
Darryl Sittler (1980-81)
Vaive (1983-84)

Matthews (253) moved past Bob Pulford (251) into 9TH place on Maple Leafs all-time goals list. He has a point in each of his last 13 games.

Matthews looked and sounded like a different man in the presser tonight. Extremely dialed in, with a quiet confidence that hasn't been there before. He's always said all the right things about this team taking the next step but I wasn't sure if he believed it. It's been a big few weeks. Convincing wins over Boston, Tampa, Florida, Carolina, and to top it off some incredible personal achievements. He looks and sounds like a guy who is beginning to believe that he might the best player in the world, and more importantly, that this is a team that can win it all.

Mike babcock kept Auston Matthews at 18 minutes because he wanted him to play like Zach Hyman. it's kind of unbelievable looking back now that someone could really think that.

1) there's only one puck, can't work
2) without Hyman there will be no one to get the puck for them
3) without Hyman there will be no one who plays defense on that line
4) if Matthews plays more minutes his points will go down.. because he'll get tired?
5) better to have two mediocre PP units instead of loading up

I've seen some crazy shit on this website.
