If there is one Wayne Gretzky record that Matthews will have a great chance of breaking: it's his ES goals.

Matthews already has close to 200 and the record is 617. Era adjusted, he will easily be the leader but even without adjusting for era, he should get there.

I was upset when we lost the McDavid sweepstakes. Little did I know the hockey gods had other plans for us. Auston motherf***in Matthews.

Can't believe we have this generational player on our team. Absolute beast. Amazing that we're all able to witness his greatness while playing for the blue and white.

I would not trade Matthews for McDavid. No way.

I felt that as I was typing this message. Defensive monster. Just in terms of the who's the best player though, that's all we ever saw back then. Now again with these 2.
Your comparison is valid, this does feel like this generation's Crosby vs Ovi.

Funny how different Ovi and Matthews function as goal scorers too. Ovechkin is a huge volume shooter with his 1-timer nuke off the left wall but could also drive the net very well... whereas Matthews is a more versatile scorer - sick wristers, deft tips, occasional 1-time blast, can deke the goalie 1 on 1..

Except in this case it would be like Ovechkin being better defensively than Crosby.

It is pretty awesome, isn't it. I've been following this team for over 50 years and the best Leafs season from a player I'd seen up until now was Gilmour when he almost won the Hart but that was just one amazing year. Matthews is just getting started, I'm now starting to get a taste of what it felt like for fans of teams that had guys like Hull, Selanne, Kurri, Bossy etc. playing for them and I love it!!

Now we really to win a freaking playoff round or two, it's time.

And here I was thinking that his play was mediocre (by his standards) lately. Of course he then goes any puts up 3+1 against a powerhouse that he hadn't scored on in 4 prior games.

He's definitely a front runner in the Hart conversation: same points per game as Draisaitl, all the while playing 2 fewer minutes each game, and the most shockingly, 82 fewer PP minutes this entire season. Only McDavid scores at a higher clip but then again, goals and assists just don't carry the same weight.

And that list is of people who achieved that during a completely different era when scoring was extremely high...maybe with the exception of Ovi, which is why I still think he's the greatest goal scorer to date, but I also think Auston will surpass him.
Ovechkin had nearly double the power play minutes that Auston Matthews has had in the first six years of his career. Part of this may be due to health/injuries but this is super relevant in any nuanced discussion about goal scoring prowess between the two.
