Matthews just screams captain to me too. He is the vocal leader on and off the ice as far as I can tell. He's 6'3 220, hits, plays great d... he's perfect at everything. He's basically the perfect player. He's the Mike Trout of hockey. He's the perfect captain and he only wears the A part time. Hopefully that changes one day with all due respect to Tavares.
I would not be surprised if Shanny, Duby, and JT have already discussed giving Auston the C to sweeten his 8 year deal… while John takes an A and $1.1 million on his own deal.

I doubt it very much and if Matthews is any type of leader he wouldn’t accept it that way.

He’ll take over once Tavares retires.

Folks,

What was the song that was played when Matty walked into the locker room?

We are lucky to have him. Hopefully he felt the love last night. Let that sink in for when contact talks start up again. He's going to basically be given whatever he wants. And he will deserve it.

Congrats to him on 50. We all know he would have done it by now if not for the pandemic. It still is so great to see a full arena on their feet for so long after he scored. This town is his.

People really love to imagine Auston Matthews pulling a Kawhi Leonard on Toronto but I really don't buy the Los Angeles or Vegas megastar big market pull because those markets aren't analogous to playing for the LA Lakers in basketball or going to the LA Dodgers in MLB.

For better or for worse the Leafs will make Matthews the highest paid player in cap history before they let him walk.

Amazing to see #50 last nite. Since Keefe took over and Matthews started playing with Marner:

19/20 - 33 goals in 47 games (58 goal pace)
20/21 - 41 goals in 52 games (65 goal pace)
21/22 - 50 goals in 62 games (66 goal pace)

What’s even more special about the last two years is that he played injured for the second half of last year, missed camp and the start of the season. At this point I would be shocked if he doesn’t hit 60 this year.

Scoring Leaders with no empty net points

1. Draisaitl 57gms, 73pts, 1.28ppg
2. Huberdeau 56gms, 72pts, 1.29ppg
3. McDavid 56gms, 71pts, 1.27ppg
4. Matthews 53gms, 70pts, 1.32ppg
5. Kaprizov 53gms, 68pts, 1.28ppg
What is even more remarkable is the discrepancy we are seeing for PP time compared to other top tier teams in the NHL.

We are currently ranked 31st in the NHL for PP TOI at 287mins.

1. Draisaitl (EDM: 323mins PP TOI, NHL rank: 16th)
2. Huberdeau (FLA: 346mins PP TOI, NHL rank: 9th)
3. McDavid (EDM: 323mins PP TOI, NHL rank: 16th)
4. Matthews (TOR: 287mins PP TOI, NHL rank: 31st)
5. Kaprizov (MIN: 332mins PP TOI, NHL rank: 13th)

So even when looking at the narrowest of discrepancy's (EDM), Connor and Leon would have had a share of 36 more minutes of powerplay to pad those stats. If people want to think that is not a big deal, well tell me how the leagues most efficient PP doesn't have a single player in the top 10 for PP points? Connor and Leon have 13 and 11 more PP Pts. respectively. Surely some of that has to do with those extra 36 mins of PP time that they would have the lion share of.

Add: the TOI I listed are the total PP TOI for their respective teams, but if you look at the screen shot as well you can see Connor alone has had 70 more minutes of PP time, and Leon has 82 mins more.

What Auston is doing is irrefutably Hart worthy IMO. It's not even close

Auston Matthews is having the best goalscoring season since at least 1995-96.

The year Ovechkin scored 65 in 82 he had a monstrous 485 minutes of PP time in the season and 5:37 mins of PP time per game.

Matthews this year has 185 minutes of PP time and is on pace to have a total of 230 minutes of PP time with an average time of 3 mins per game.

That's not even half the PP time and he's still got 14 PPG compared to the 22 PPG Ovechkin had that year. He's scored 8 fewer PPG's while playing at least ~255 fewer minutes on the PP and is on pace to hit 62 goals in 77 games.

It’s going to be incredibly difficult for the talking heads to deny him when he hits 60+ goals and 100+ points. Especially when combined with his very high level of defensive play.

Don't forget, wrist surgery to start the season lol. He's been unbelievable.

I really think if Matthews really just focused on offense, he can get 50 in 50.

Honestly the run he’s on over the last 45 games is proving he is at least near capable. His biggest challenge may be not missing any of the first 50 games to put himself in the best position to try for it

I am totally fine with the Leafs paying Matthews the salary cap max. Players like Matthews are generational. As long as you have him, you've got a shot to win.

Keep in mind that guys like Stamkos, Kucherov, Bergeron, Marchand etc. aren't getting any younger. The Leafs with the Marner/Matthews duo will rule the Atlantic for a while.

DoPS would probably suspend him for something bogus along the way.
