Auston Matthews back to back hat tricks

Matthews 302G in 482GP
Ovechkin 304G in 482GP

Surprisingly close to start their careers

It's close by raw stats, it's not comparable by adjusted stats: Ovechkin's first 7 seasons 33 goals and 126 points ahead of Matthews.

To be fair, all of Matthews goals would have went in 20 years ago too
No, old Ovechkin was only 2 goals behind young Matthews, playing in the same scoring environment winning 3 Rockets. Young Ovechkin would tear apart this league.

Just another opening night for AM. Where are these hatricks in the playoffs though?

He barely scores hat tricks in general.

But just to put into perspective how good he is versus the players on the team you cheer for.

He has more goals in any single playoffs that he has played in than the entire Ottawa Senators team in the last 6 playoffs.

May as well just remove Gretzky from the record book at this point.

The scoring era argument is always just a joke. Just because the players didn’t produce this well 20 years ago means nothing.

They had their chance, they didn’t do it.

Talent ebs and flows over the years, not every era is talent equivalent. And era adjusted stats assumes that talent levels aren’t relative.

It’s pretty simple stats, a goal goes in, it counts as 1 full goal. It’s not later run through a calculator to find out how much of a percentage of a goal it’s worth.

If an era sucked at scoring goals, that’s just the way it is

And only one round 2 win to show for it. Way to go Austin! Thats' how you git'er done in Leafland!

Exactly.

Odd conclusion.

He's been making the playoffs every year including his rookie year.

I know everyone likes to hate on him cause he hasn't dragged his team deep (the best player in the world hasn't either), but the Sens can't even make it to the playoffs, that's how bad they are.

Exactly.

Odd conclusion.

weren't the 80s the highest-scoring era ever?

Seems weird we'd throwaway Matthews' scoring because it was done in a higher-scoring era than Ovechkin, but want to praise Gretzky.

Mind explaining your logic where you disregard the great scoring of Matthews but keep Gretzky as the best player ever?

Lol again some Leaf fans with their impotent playoff banter. Sens weren't expect to make the playoffs any of those years. Leafs were expected to go far, but all they have done is choke. This is the back your playoffs jabs are riding on. You think they hold any weight? lol!!!!!

You type like you're 12 and your arguments mimic that as well, I won't respond after this, but the Leafs have made the playoffs every year since his rookie season (with Marner and Nylander as rookies), the Sens can not make it to the playoffs despite all these "top end" talents like Sanderson (future Norris winner), Stutzle (best contract in the league), Tkachuk (unicorn power forward), Chabot (minute eating number 1)... eventually when they had all these amazing talents, they were supposed to make it.

Are you going to be singing the same tune next year too?

Matthews, Marner, and Nylander are all PPG in the last 3 years, the early seasons of their career bring them down, and they don't have the "benefit" of guys like Stutzle who can't get into the playoffs when they are young and developing.

All they needed was 2 PP goals and 2 extra man goals to beat the worst team in the NHL. So if you want to beat the Leafs, dont get any penalties.
All Montreal needed were a couple of unforced errors leading to breakaways to stay relevant. If you wanna shut down the Habs, just don't fall down and give them a clean breakaway.

Big win to start the year feels good, Matthews just dominated and willed his team to win. Funny to see all the Habs fans reactions after all the shots they were taking when it was 4-3

Hopefully the Habs don't screw up the 2024 draft, that would be 3 in a row.

Toronto drafted so well, they may one day make it past the second round.

One round in six years. You keep pounding that playoff chest and maybe one day you can watch the Leafs play a Stanley Cup final on colour TV.

Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Rielly, Knies, Minten, Liljegren all look great. If they can stay healthy, they're poised to make a deep run.

Too bad #1 pick Slafkovsky wasn't playing last night
