Apparently, some still like to believe they were a few bounces away and just got out goalied while also believe if only the Leafs beat certain teams they will be in the Finals since TB, Bruins, Panthers and Habs all made it to the Finals after beating the Leafs.
The simple reason why we cannot win with this team in playoffs is style of play. Bettman preaches skill, no fighting, speed for 80 games and then allows the referring style to revert to 1975.
If the style of play was the same as season, we may win. With a new league each May, we cannot with AM, MM as our best players.

It’s definitely pretty assinine that the rule book goes out the window in the playoffs. You have to build almost 2 different teams in one

If that’s the case, I think Oilers would win with McD over any other teams in the league.

the reason we continue to lose isnt the 'core 4' its the 4 on defense that suck and completely kill our team.
we play hard as hell defensively and sacrifice offense to play a defensive minded game, and our bottom 4 keep tossing freebees
to the opposition for easy goals and just hanging our goalies out.
one bad goal lost almost all of our games, and almost every one was off of a bad d-man play.
when those 4-D cant get the puck out of the zone, the 'core 4' have wasted shift after wasted shift.
when Matthews needs to come behind his own net, and win the puck and then clear the zone himself, we have issues.

We need to fix the D, and the 'core 4' will look like the players they are, until then, they are being ruined.

Feel the same about MacKinnon?

A lot of hot air here... no one banked on a pandemic, this is what Dubas' biggest mistake was, everyone knows it, it is unfortunate.
Let me preface this by saying I absolutely love Papi. I love how his game has grown last season. I want him to be a Leaf for a very, very long time.

But comparing his situation to MacKinnon's makes no sense. MacKinnon took a haircut on his second deal to help the Avs win. Papi did no such thing. MacKinnon helped bring a cup to COL during that deal. Papi....I rest my case.

Bottom line is, he received a big payday coming off his entry deal and, realistically, hasn't lived up to expectations of that deal. Did he win the rocket and Hart one year? He did. He is a talented player. Individual accolades aside, this team needs players that are committed to winning a cup. Unfortunately, this is a hard cap league. There is entirely too much cap chewed up by the core 4 to round out the roster with quality support players (dead horse anyone?). If him or any of the core 3 (I'll leave JT out as he has a NMC and nothing we can do about that) are looking for more cash grab type deals, move em out and move forward. I'll still be a fan of his wherever he goes, but that is type of culture shift we need.

EDIT: I apologize but I didnt get the facts straight on Mac's second contract. My bad. I still stand by my comments about Papi though. I love him but he has to be committed to the cause.

Well, some teams can do it.
Vegas, TB, Avs, Stars are teams that had regular season success and playoffs success over the past few years.

One goal in FIVE games for our three highest paid players.
Well if that’s the production from your top three players, we really need to fix the defence and goalie bc we need FOUR shutouts to win a series.

It’s true. It’s 2 different games. You know that, I know that, the Leafs not so much.
This is a fact that management needs to learn. Judging by Treliving’s comments, he does. But will he understand it with the core????

Mack didn’t take any discount on his 2nd deal. He was overpaid at that time. Heck do people really forgot how Avs moved him to RW bc they thought he couldn’t cut it as a C? Then they trade Duchense and ROR and something clicked in Mack’s head and he became the player he is today.

I agree with this but this is the way the playoffs have been forever and it will most likely be the same next year.

So even if you believe the game should be reffed differently, doesn't it just make more sense to accept that it isn't currently and then proceed accordingly?

You don't win anything for being ahead of the curve if it didn't actually translate to winning championships when the game was called a certain way.

You can always build a team that is ultra versatile so no matter what way the game turns, you have a roster that can win in that enviroment.

It's not that simple at all.

Matthews is paying Canadian tax on is salary of 750K, the signing bonus are taxed where he is resident which I assume is still Arizona- he is netting more than Kucherov

Even ignoring the tax differences, he had the ability to invest half his contract earnings in the first few years via frontloaded signing bonuses + sponsorships, if he has a competent financial advisor he should be making millions in returns every year.

Anyone who has been watching the Vegas/Florida series and still thinks we are even close to be a contender is delusional.
they are both so far ahead of us it’s sad.

florida really isn't that much better than us and they are getting dummied.

They have better goaltending thats about it and even right now that goaltending is looking shaky. Vegas is the best team built for playoff success, but there
The more cap one has the more the other players can get signed or make better than league minimum.

Ex: Teams that don't run a 23 man roster due to cap constraints or sign 50 contracts due to internal financial situation/budget.

I am not sure smaller salary guys want some so called "stars" to keep taking bigger piece of the pie. Every franchise out there isn't Maple Leafs with quite a significant financial spending budget you know

I don’t get why we are trying to pretend like the PA has not openly discussed these topics. If you follow any PA work or players tribune, in any of the major leagues you know the Salary cap is not the issue of the players. It’s the teams responsibility to manage their cap. Yes the PA wants its stars to make the most amount of money possible. They would never be in favour of star players taking less than market value

I just don't see the team blowing this all up, and starting again.. and with that in mind, it's improbable that we do see any of the four traded. It's just hope that they can find health, find a way to compete in the playoffs eventually (and we have plenty of examples of others who eventually learn), and find a way to surround them with the right pieces.

But if after three years, we are still seeing injury issues, and no playoff compete, it's time to take the whole team in a new direction.

It's gotten to the point, that even a normally pretty positive person about the team, players and management.. such as myself, just doesn't believe in it anymore. Matthews has the talent to have been one of the best Leafs of all time... I just don't know if his wrists are up to.. and Marner too, truly an elite player in many ways, but if his guy isn't scoring, it's not going to show.
Not gonna lie...while reading the bolded my whole body slumped....so just 3 more years of the same to see if it works or not?

Watch the finals and you will see the difference
I am seeing the Panthers serve up chances like they have all season including against the Leafs in round 2 and bob playing like he did all year before that ~10 game stretch. and seeing their infractions called as penalties at a rate closer to the regular season. oh well.

It’s definitely pretty assinine that the rule book goes out the window in the playoffs. You have to build almost 2 different teams in one

Or that the rule book becomes make it up as you go along, tapping someone's stick with yours is a penalty but not crosschecks, don't let Leafs players shove someone infront of their net but let the opposing team charge our players from behind without a penalty, let the other team jump our team because one of their players fell into the boards, and also make sure to not give us a single powerplay for the first time in 60 years in the game we went down 3-0 to Florida

The officiating really does become a complete joke whether we like it or not, but at the same time our powerplay is usually never as good in the playoffs for whatever reason so that's something they have to figure out going forward

The Leafs core 4 takes up $40.5 mi & 1/2 their Salary Cap and Vegas top 10 forwards = $41 mil Cap and Vegas has 1/2 their cap balance towards Defense & Goaltending a couple depth forwards.

View attachment 717207

Vegas depth is scoring circles around our Leafs based on 10 forwards against only 4 particularly when Leafs core particular score 3 goals combined in 5 games against Florida.

Leafs really to get out of this Cap Hell situation even it means selling off an $11 mil player and then dividing the cap between 2-3 players.
Ive been preaching this for the last week....Even Panthers cap is spread around so much more than the leafs....Its pretty crazy actually. Put Vegas/Panthers caps beside the leafs and you see pretty clearly and quickly that one of the these things is not like the others. (Capfriendly)

I do think this is more the Shanaplan than anything else. I think Dubas saw the futility, couldn't do what he wanted, and left.

Until Shanahan is gone, this is the same old group.
So Dubas who had Keefe in the Soo and the Marlies then the Leafs was Shannys idea all along and the reason Keefe hasnt been fired? And that Dubas wanted to fire him but Shanny wouldnt let him? Or did I misunderstand cause I dont get this way of reasoning?

To be honest, I don't really give a f*** what Matthews deserves or could get paid in an open market, I care if the leafs can win with Matthews new contract.

Im not sure they can win with Matthews making 14 million, not even getting into how that will effect Mitch's contract etc. I just don't think Matthews has that extra gear you need in the playoffs to be a top performer. Matthews isn't carrying the team on his back through a series, hell he rarely does that for a single game and he wants to be the top paid guy in the league?

He may be worth 14 million in the regular season but he sure as shit isn't worth it during the playoffs.

Your right, difference is Ive already seen this version and have a pretty good idea that it doesnt work. I would rather try a different version and if that doesnt work try another etc.
for sure, I just think the idea that the past proves the future is not correct in the case of hockey teams, as is the notion that there is no downside to replacing this version of The Leafs with a different less top heavy etc one. anyway I understand that lots of people are sick of the sight of this group and I also understand the desire to move on at any cost even. I just disagree that any alternative has a better chance of success than what we've got. and I do not feel at all as many here seem to that anything less than a stanley cup champ is an inexcusable failure that I deserve better than having to watch.

This 100%. We'll see just how much he wants to be here. If he takes them to the cleaners again, it speaks volumes as to what his priorities are. There's no reason whatsoever he can't sign an 8 year deal for 13 per. That makes him the highest paid, but also locks that number in long term to ease the burden for the team as the cap continues to rise.
I am curious to what extent it will affect peoples interest if 34 takes the leafs to the woodshed. I know my first feelings about him getting 15 mill as an example is I am immediately turned off. Would everyone be able to cheer him on? And what if he turns out to be a 40goal/85 pt player like Tavares....does it get ugly in Toronto for him?

people also forget that we became a playoff team the Day we drafted Matthews, and we didnt have the core/depth that Col had when they drafted MacK
they already had Duchene [#3 pick], Landeskog [#2 pick], RoR, Stastny, E Johnson [another #1 pick], Barrie, Parenteau with GSG and Varlamov in net the day MacK joined that squad, they were a solid team.

the years following #1 overall MacK
23rd (Bleaklry - fail)
10th (rantanen)
10th (Jost)
4th (Makar)
16th (Kaut -fail)
4th (Bowen)
...imagine the Leafs getting 2 #10's and 2 4th OV's the seasons following drafting Matthews. ...we basically drafted Nylander, Marner, Matthews and done, zero high picks after, no Rantanen, Makar, or Bowen gifts.

they drafted their 2 best d-men (one arguable for best D in the league) 4 and 6 seasons after they already had MacK

I hear what your saying but I would say there is no proof that replacing these higher end players with other good players with different attributes would be worse than what we have now. Again look at how Vegas spends their cap.

To the bolded I would say for me its not cup or bust, its wanting to have a team I am kind of proud of, that I want to cheer for because of how they play and how play for each other. The way this team approaches the game is the total opposite to how I grew up playing the game and how the teams in the cup are playing. Was this all on Dubas, I dont know yet but time will tell. It did start when he took over though.
