It was a rebuild. They got rid of pretty much everyone from 2014-16 other than Rielly and Kadri. JVR and Bozak also would have been dealt if the team didn't go directly from last to a playoff team in 2017.
They started a rebuild, but they don’t know what a rebuild is and made their first mistake with those two. Then they doubled down with JT.

Their window to legitimately compete for a Cup hasn’t opened yet.

Moving JVR and Bozak is still the right call. JVR could get a 1st easily and Bozak at least a 2nd. Add one of our two 2nds and that’s the price Tampa paid for Miller and McDonagh.

Instead we kept them and spent the 2nd on a 4th line rental.

Context is valuable, even if it hurts your argument. There is a lot more impact from external factors in the playoffs, as everybody is playing in such disparate situations.

Cups are won with all sorts of cap configurations.
7 years and 1 single round win with this 4 core forwards at some point we have to run out of excuses.
I don’t know if you have been watching the finals but we are not even close the either of those teams in balance and certainly not intensity or simple will to win

I have been watching the finals, and we're right there with both of those teams in all of those things.

Lets say the real thing... everyone talking about Matthews, marner and whatever playing for money but lets see the reality

At 11,634 M, Matthews winning less in real money than Kucherov at 9,5M. If you removing taxes of both

Real salary after taxation
matthews 5,447
Kucherov 6,025M

Marner at 10,9 =5,106909
Stamkos at 8,5M = 5,394668

Its just the reality...

When might this occur?
I dont know. To contend for the Cup you have to be able to beat different styles of play.
In order to do that they have to fill a few holes with players with more speed that are harder to play against. 1A or 1B D, bottom pair D, two top 6 forwards, couple of bottom 6 F. Maybe #1 goalie.

Having a couple of really good forwards is a great start, but it doesn’t make you a legit contender. Especially when the forwards all play a similar style game.

I heard that Matthews gets a signing bonus sent to AZ and pays a different tax rate than his salary of 775k.

Wow we are going to have to respectfully totally disagree that we are right there with them, because we are not. Our team is gofling and they are playing for the cup.
As far as how long we have had those guys I’m pretty sure they have been in the league coming up on 7 years now

It's not that simple at all.

Matthews is paying Canadian tax on is salary of 750K, the signing bonus are taxed where he is resident which I assume is still Arizona- he is netting more than Kucherov

Theres alway a team and style in their path that they cant beat, including Montreal.

We haven’t even made it as far as Carolina or Edmonton yet (both have been to the Conference Finals) so I have to disagree we are right there. When the dust settles, we aren’t.

Watching and understanding what you're seeing are two different things.
Leafs still have a ways to go before being labelled as a serious contender.
Hopefully this is the year they figure it out.

Eichel about to win his 4th playoff round, the SC and possibly the Conn Smythe in his first playoff appearance. The 3 amigos have 3 first round wins between them in 21 playoff appearances. Let's run them back and see if they grew any balls this summer.

And not for any of the reasons you named.

We have not had our core 4 forwards for 7 years. We signed Tavares in 2018, and he also was not a part of the 2021 playoffs. We have had 4 playoffs with the core 4 forwards.
And for one of those years, we didn't have this core 4 cap structure you keep talking about. Which makes the whole conclusion that we can't win with this cap structure quite amusing, because we actually have a better playoff record with it than when our superstars were on ELCs.

And if we were to go by your logic that playoff outcomes are the only determination for team quality, you'd have to agree that we've lost to the 2nd best team in the league for 3 years straight, and in 4 of the past 5 years.

Anyone who has been watching the Vegas/Florida series and still thinks we are even close to be a contender is delusional.
they are both so far ahead of us it’s sad.
the Leafs played Florida 9 times this season, won 4 and lost 5, scored 25 goals and allowed 24, 5 of the games went to OT. even if you want to say regular season doesn't matter 3 of the regular season games were in the last month of the season when Florida was chasing the last playoff spot.

"not even close" what are we even talking about here

He literally CAN NOT sign before July 1st.

It is NOT possible
I suppose you don't know how contract NEGOIATIONS work, it's a process. A verbal agreement will be in place prior to July 1st, ready to put pen on paper and announce the signing. He officially can't announce a deal and Leafs aren't able to present a contract to the league until July 1st, as a technicality, but be sure to know if he is ready to sign an extension it will most likely be July 1st, if not, get ready for a ride this season. so i will revise by statement to

'If he doesn't sign BY July 1 do these words mean anything?

Talking about getting through the grind of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Going into the playoffs if you asked yourself do you think the Leafs could win 10,12,16 playoff games?, the answer most gave was highly unlikely.

It's interesting to me that Dahlin is on a worse team than Matthews, no issue with a bridge and there is a handshake deal rumored to be in place for July 1st for max term of 8 years...

We have a better city and team and there is all the "Will Matthews sign?" or "Matthews wants the highest AAV but not max term" BS - You either wanna be here or don't.
