There's no indication Shanahan/ownership has any interest in a rebuild. The only Leafs executive who publicly said they'd even consider trading a core piece just got fired.
They did have interest in a rebuild when they were drafting Matthews, but then they abandoned that idea when they didn’t move JVR and Bozak.

The number of mistakes they’ve made is hard to believe.

I don’t think it was a mistake, I think Pietrangelo didn’t want to come here. The money wasn’t a barrier, he just had his destination picked out already. Karlsson is probably the only big fish we couldn’t afford without serious roster surgery and even there the blocking factor was trading 3+ 1sts worth of value for him, not the money.

No it doesn’t leave less available to other PA members. It’s common sense, PA wants their players to make the most money possible. Especially their stars. MacKinnon talked about it when he signed his contract. Acknowledged that the PA wouldn’t be happy about him signing just $100,000 more than McDavid.
The Leafs spend to the cap every year. The more Mathew’s makes the less it leaves for the other Leafs players who are members of the P.A.

I think he said he want a chance to win another Cup so doubt he talked to Dubas, but the money wasnt available either without moving out a few guys.
Its probably a good thing that Dubas didn’t have to do anything else “creative”

Having one guy take up a lot of cap space actually hurts some guys that get replaced by minimum wage earners, not to mention good players are forced to take minimum wage contracts.

the PA is always going to push for star players to take big contracts. the bigger the contracts the better for the players overall. The smaller salary guys know this already, the stars will get the push and the money. Teams are always looking for bargain bin contracts, so they won't lose jobs.

The PA would NEVER advocate for STAR players to take less than market value ever.

It does unless the team has an abundance of leftover cap space in which case the P.A would absolutely push for a player to take as much of the unused cap space that would otherwise go back into the owners bank account. Pushing a player on a max cap team to squeeze extra blood out of the team leaving less for the others is not advantageous to the P.A.

Marner gets a pass from me, he doesn't run away but he's not going to do any good engaging. He pairs up so no one gets double teamed which is all you can ask for. Matthews picking up sticks while Rielly is being jumped is completely unacceptable. Getting slapped around by Stamkos only made it worse.

Matthews and Nylander have always been disappointing in that regard.

Most people get this.

Star players taking more money does nothing but hurt other PA members.
They do lose jobs to ELC in some cases, but in a lot of cases they can’t earn a bigger paycheck.

The Leafs were looking bargain bin players that can carry a lot of weight, like Kampf, because their 2 over priced centers are not complete players, unlike a Bergeron.

but it all balances out in the end, look at all the bargain bin players who have left the leafs. They've gotten paid. The money is there. Hell Kampf is expected to get 2 million +, Bunting is looking at 4million plus after playing for 850k.

No doubt.

Kampf will be missed if he signs elsewhere and the Leafs have to find another million dollar players because Matthews took his money.

There’s only so much pie.

I think Petro was a bit of a moon shot from the money department and Vegas was more of a preference.

I'd rather pay Auston Matthews a $1.5 million raise than David Kampf a $1.5 million raise. Let's not get things twisted around too much here.

I wouldn’t give a single one of them a raise. They did nothing to deserve it. They quit as soon as the first round win monkey was off their backs. They disappeared right after that

The real nail in the coffin was getting Tavares. That killed 7 years of opportunity

Now do this with the other "superstar" players. MacKinnon. Drai. McDavid. Kucherove. Do you have any idea how much better their playoff stats are? Like, ANY idea? Come on Dekes. The problem in the playoffs is the core not living up to their contracts. THAT'S he problem. The problem Dekes is THAT. TTTTHHHHAAAATTTTT!!!!!
No, the problem, Throw More Waffles, is that much like contract discussions where people like to cherry pick the best contracts ever to compare to and declare everything else "unprecedented dramatic overpayments", you're similarly cherry picking a few of the highest producing players in the playoffs ever, ignoring the external factors and context that led to much of that inflated production, and suggesting that everybody needs to match that, no matter their own unique situation, or they are bad playoff performers.

Matthews and Marner are point per game or higher in the playoffs on their current contracts, while facing +0.70 GSAx per game goaltending and 3 straight cup finalists, and while providing elite defense, PKing, etc.. You could do a LOT worse. I've yet to see anybody look at how it actually compares historically. I've just seen people do what you did here, and automatically declare it as bad because the points don't match what your specifically chosen player in situations much more conducive to production did.

The , we face 3 cup finalist is a poor excuse. Why shouldn’t we expect to be cup finalists?
we have had this great modern GM and this skilled highly paid core for 7 dam years now and nothing but playoff failure year after year after year after year.
I thought we were supposed to be contenders but all I hear is excuse after excuse.
Vegas is probably going to win the cup with basically a workman like team, certainly not 50% percent of their cap tied up in 4 forwards.
Is it all just luck and if so why are we paying these 3 guys so much of the cap

It was a rebuild. They got rid of pretty much everyone from 2014-16 other than Rielly and Kadri. JVR and Bozak also would have been dealt if the team didn't go directly from last to a playoff team in 2017.

players never have and never will be payed for playoff performance, in any league.

Context is valuable, even if it hurts your argument. There is a lot more impact from external factors in the playoffs, as everybody is playing in such disparate situations.

Cups are won with all sorts of cap configurations.

That definitely killed Dubas’ chances of icing a Cup contending team.
