Matthews - 299
Ovechkin - 297
McDavid - 287
Draisaitl - 285
Pastarnak - 276
MacKinnon - 225

Matthews has played the least games. We can do ES goals too, if you prefer.

Kempe - 131 (9 less games, if you're wondering)

Don't be silly.

He already did, this contract actually helps the Leafs.
His goal totals are great, but they don't justify being the highest paid player of the group when those players all outclass him so much on points.

I don't care what Matthews has done years ago. Last year he was not even worth his current cap hit and now he wants a raise on top of that?

Sure Matthews has outpaced Kempe over their careers, I'm not saying Kempe is better nor would I expect him to clear 40 next year. But Matthews is most certainly not $7-10m better than Kempe or other players in that salary/production range.

The only person on that list with more major awards than Matthews since he joined the league is McDavid.

Years ago? He's one year removed from the Hart, Pearson, and back to back Rockets. I repeat, don't be silly.

He's more than doubled him in goals since he came into the league. More goals in the last three years than Kempe has in his career. You claimed they score goals at similar pace. Come on, man.

Good for Matthews then. All that hardware doesn't change the fact that he was thoroughly outclassed last year.

My Kempe comment was in reference to last year, where Kempe had 41 in 82 games and Matthews had 40 in 74. Either way, theres no excuse for Matthews to have someone making half as much money score more goals than him. If he's as good as his contract demands indicate, he should be obliterating the peasants in that AAV range.

It does mean he's one of the very best players in the league though. Which is what players get paid for.

He scored at a similar pace to Nathan MacKinnon and Alex Ovechkin, last year. Two years ago Alex DeBrincat scored at a better pace than McDavid or Draisaitl, Pacioretty at the same pace as Ovechkin. Excuses are cool for those guys?

This is silly.

And two years ago Huberdeau had an insane season, and was terrible this past year. How do you feel about him?

If Matthews wants that kind of money, he needs to be outproducing everyone else. If he wants to score at a similar pace to Mackinnon and Ovechkin (two stanley cup champions), he should get a contract in their range as well.

I don't know what Huberdeau has to do with you thinking that Kempe scores at a similar rate to Matthews. But he makes what, 10.5? You want to compare that to what Matthews should make?

You named guys who people are making excuses for as if their drop in production is ok. Is Huberdeau another one that deserves excuses for being overpaid? He's one of my favorite players and I sure as shit don't think his drop in production is ok.

No, I mean like not finishing 22nd in points. Unacceptable for a guy who wants to be the highest paid player in the league.

I'm saying Auston Matthews has been one of the very best players in the league since he came into the league and not only will be get paid like one, he deserves to be because he is. MacKinnon's totals pale in comparison to McDavid, but he makes more.

The season before MacKinnon signed his extension that made him the highest paid player in the league, he was 17th in points.

Mackinnon also won a Stanley Cup and carried a 1.35 PPG with 88 points in 65 games the year before he signed...

I don't think anyone is suggesting Matthews doesn't deserve the money or should even be paid the highest on this round. The frustration is he wants the most favorable AAV, the shortest term, probably the best bonus structure, full protections and is hemming and hawing. He is on the verge of getting everything, but he's already got his sights set on the next, even bigger thing.

How come he's not like this with a scoring title every year? Or going deep in the playoffs.

McDavid's contract was also signed well before Mac's. Mac is also a stanley cup champion, insanely competitive, is a beast in the gym, is borderline psychotic towards teammates when it comes to winning, and willingly took a discount.

When Matthews starts checking off those boxes he can earn excuses too. Until then, while his contract demands are all me first and he continues his nonchalant demeanour, he can get f***ed.

Let’s talk numbers on the ice. At $13.5 million per season what is the regular season floor in terms of production that is expected?
60 goals, 60 assists, 120 points and nothing less, plus well over a PPG in the playoffs. Considering MacKinnon is scoring 111 points in 71 games for 12.6, Pasta is scoring 60 and 115 for 11.75, and Tkachuk is scoring 104 for 9.5 mil.

Is this the same Matthews that had zero goals in our first second round appearance in 19 years. Is that guy worth a big raise?

The reason marner was not on that list for 2022-2023 was because of the way his contract is structured. He sill made ridiculous amount off-ice compared to other players (only exception: McJesus, Ovi, Matthews)

Also jsut FYI

Note: except for McJesus, Matthews, Marner and Ovi other players' endorsements aren't that lucrative

Most deals in terms of volume doesn't necessarily mean the most money overall. You're also linking a Forbes article from a year before the one I shared.

Regardless, both Marner and Matthews make a lot in endorsements.

Those clamoring to pay Matthews anything he wants will be the same people losing their minds when the Leafs are exposed once again for lack of depth and are forced to trade a player like Nylander or Marner for 50-cents on the dollar because they can't afford them.

They can't and won't trade Marner.
So we're going to pay Matthews 13.5 x 4 then Marner 12.5 x 5 and have 26 million locked up in two softies who can't get it done in the playoffs? No thanks. Been there, done that, for years now. If they aren't leaving some money on the table and committing long-term, good riddance. Regular season thrills, followed by poor playoff showings, have gotten old.

They both have a NMC, and they both want to stay here. Unless they want to leave and agree to a sign-and-trade, there's nothing the Leafs can do.

Yes, they both have a NMC.

It's debatable if they truly want to stay here, or if they only want to remain here on their terms, which include being overpaid. Huge difference.

Yes, there are things the Leafs can do. But there's zero chance Shanny and the soft MLSE board will do them. Honestly though, it shouldn't even come to this. Both players were drafted by this organization and have been given anything they have asked for. It's time for them to concede a bit this time around and commit to the club for terms that are win-win for both parties. If they want to play hardball, the Leafs should too.

The other thing you're missing is that the suits upstairs clearly want them to stay here. It's a done deal as far as I can see. We're just waiting for the terms to be finalized (Marner a year after Matthews).

Nylander could possibly go, but I'm not betting on it.

Impossible, unless these kids leave some money on the table. Not only do you need to keep them, you also need to replace Tavares and his production (and role) soon. We can say what we want about him but he's been around a PPG player since he's been here and he fills an important role. When he's gone, the Leafs will need to add another 2C who is capable of scoring at least 65-70 points, which will be another 8+ million at least. If this core can't win more than 1 round with two centers scoring a PPG or more, they sure won't do it with one.

If Matthews is getting what is speculated then we all know Marner won't be that far behind.

Rumours of Nylander waiting to see what AM gets means he isn't re-signing and in all likelihood we'll lose him for nothing.

Best case scenario IF we're out of it by the trade deadline, trade Willy then. If not Willy is here and we can only hope we go on a run.

Marner wants to stay, 100%

I think you missed the part where Winnipeg Ian said that there is absolutely no excuse for anyone who wants to be paid the highest AAV in the NHL to finish that low in the point totals, including injury.
I don't think anyone is suggesting Matthews doesn't deserve the money or should even be paid the highest on this round.
That's exactly what he's saying, and citing finishing 22nd in points in a season that her was obviously injured in as his reasoning.

He believes Matthews should be paid like Kempe because "they score at a similar pace." If you want to hop in that boat, I wouldn't grab a paddle, I'd bring a bucket.
McDavid's contract was also signed well before Mac's. Mac is also a stanley cup champion, insanely competitive, is a beast in the gym, is borderline psychotic towards teammates when it comes to winning, and willingly took a discount.
Dude, is finishing 17th in points unacceptable of someone who wants to be paid the highest AAV or not? You made the rules.

PS: McDavid's contract was also signed well before Matthews will be (and actually a positive for us), he's incredibly competitive, he does work incredibly hard in the offseason (crazy, he can still attend events and do that), and is taking less with us than he'd get as a FA next season (assuming the rumored number is true, we don't actually know yet).
When Matthews starts checking off those boxes he can earn excuses too. Until then, while his contract demands are all me first and he continues his nonchalant demeanour, he can get f***ed.
There's nothing me first about these demands unless you're also willing to admit that McDavid and MacKinnon did the same (because they did). You have different rules for Matthews than you do everyone else.

I also take your silence to mean you've finally admitted that your argument about Kempe was absolutely insane.

This is what I always find hilarious here.

You've just assumed so much in this post about his intentions or feelings to make the player fit a certain profile that fits your opinion, this is why I always say the board is full of fan fiction, posts like this.
