Looks like no deal was in place to extend these guys and the NMCs are active. Way to go MLSE, way to go bend over that table. Fantastic job you losers.

Why use Bell or Rogers services at all? I mean if they can't even run a freaking hockey team half decently imagine how they run your coms.
^This.^ How did they allow themselves to be put in this situation?

If contracts weren't agreed upon by Monday of last week, a trade should have been made.

Holding the whole organization at gunpoint because he wants to be comfortable even though he’s been here for 8 years , they can’t commit to UFA’s and thus can’t build the roster. Prima donna.
This is a good point. Almost impossible for BT to sign any ufas without knowing how much these clowns are going to cost. I assume this year will be rough unless something crazy happens because we dont have too much cap space and cannot make any multiyear commitments so we are limited to low value ufas.

Robertson. Matthew. Jarnkrok
Knies Tavares. Nylander
Bailey Kampf. Marner
Lafferty. Holmberg. Reaves

Rielly. Brodie
Mccabe. Lilly
Gio timmins

If matthews wants to be paid the most in the league, he shouldnt need marner. He should be able to carry his own line.

If marner also wants to be a top 5 paid player, he shouldnt need matthews. Let him turn bailey and kampf into 50 point players.

This is our reality unless BT can trade one of them sooner than later.

That is one UGLY lineup... after the last few seasons, this isn't even a lineup worth turning on the tv for...

Might not mean or matter anything but disappointed we haven’t heard about a Matthews extension. I don’t want to hear Matthews camp say after seeing the free agency they got cold feet and want to wait to see how the season plays out.

Matthews hasn't been signed, and the only real leaks indicate he has no interest in staying with the team long term.

Looking for short duration contracts so he isn't tied to the team.

He has a NMC, so any sign and trade has to be on his terms.

He's after the most money, and the shortest term so that he can re-sign to a great amount with each Cap increase.

He is not the type you put a 'C' on, unless you believe that would encourage any sort of commitment to the team.

He appears to be non-attached to Toronto, other than in a mercenary role.

Leafs fans have to hope that Rielly is given the 'C', and takes over the attitude of the team.

At this point, Rielly deserves a raise, or perhaps MLSE can promote him more to give him more face-time for endorsements.

Leafs need a prime age Mark Messier ... okay most teams do ... but I'd trade Matthews for Mackinnon without hesitation. But he isn't worth MacKinnon, so Leafs would have to add quite a bit to make it work.

I don't think the team ever wins anything with Matthews and marner under contract.

I doubt the Knights would have won anything without Tkachuk there.

Would marner+Tkachuk be better than Matthew+Tkachuk?

Marner for Barkov?

This team feels like the Muskoka couple, with an odd fellow Tavares looking in, with everyone else an inconvenience.

Dude is as self serving as you can get

My guess, marner could set-up Draisaitl for as many goals as he does Matthews.

I just don't think the Leafs could pry Draisaitl out of Edmonton.

Alarmist still alarming. There’s nothing different tonight than there was last night. Or two weeks night ago. In a hypothetical world of trading AM or Willy, in their extension year, nobody is making the trade without the guy coming/going being on board anyways. The movement provisions are meaningless, have been for months.

This!

Fight tooth and nail for every single penny and yet cannot run their own lines making other players productive

Matthews wants to be the highest paid player in the league but cannot run his own line. Absolute JOKE!

More importantly even when playing together both matthews and marner crap the bed really hard in the playoffs

Never have I been so disgusted by a Leaf

Yeah, I’d rather just rebuild altogether again. The fact he doesn’t want to sign long term tells me all I need to know about what his priorities and commitments are.

Too bad Dubas already traded our 2025 1st/potentially our 2026 1st.

personally I think Matthews is trying to walk himself to UFA next year and wants to set UFA records for contracts which he now has a clear path to given his NMC. I'm thinking either LA with Kopitar's $10m coming off the books and the cap increasing or ARZ because he might want to save hockey there & be a hockey god.

That would be my first question to Matthews:
Do you want to be here long term? Very simple.
Not 4 years and maybe I’ll sign as the highest paid player in the NHL again, do you want to be here committing to 8 years, when the cap rises we are in a better position with you locked in long term.

If not, what are we doing? Paying Matthews more for a little bit, then Marner more for a little bit, what?

So what was the point of hiring someone in a rush like Treliving if we don't have this settled yet?
To go offboard and make three picks?

My takeaway from this current July 1 is there's no real money in the system for any half way decent contender to give Matthews the kind of money he wants. The work LA had to do to fit in Dubois.

But at least they signed Dubois long term. So if it takes a couple of years until Kopitar is off the books and some other moves, they have him locked up.
What do we do, sign Matthews for 4 years as the highest paid player, in 2 years JT is off the books but Marner wants a big raise and then in 2 years sign Matthews again?
They are offering us no long term stability or planning. Commit or leave.

Interesting take.

I've come to the conclusion that they're gonna give Matthews what he wants and hope/pray the Cap skyrockets. Marner and Nylander will also get well above market.

I remember on the panel on July 1st MJ was talking about the cap going up etc but MacKinnon made 6.3M last year and is just starting to make his 12.6M this year and we all knew the cap was going up.

Matthews extension will kick in, the 2nd year of MacKinnon's extension...and Matthews has been better compensated and delivered far less for his franchise.

The 14-14.5M crowd for 3-5 years can get bent.

Unless Sportsnet or TSN are willing to open the vault for the Canadian NHL package, I'm not sure how the Cap skyrockets.

Maybe MLSE could just charge $500 for standing room at Scotiabank Arena and drag the cap up artificially by milking Bay Street more.
Assuming Sportsnet and TSN say NO to giving the NHL everything they want for the Canadian package, I'm not sure what drives a huge increase in revenue.

The Leafs are playing with fire.

Yes, Tavares will be off the books in 2 years, but he is a PPG player and you don't find players like him cheap. Perhaps they think JT will give the Leafs a home town discount.

Also, the Bally Sports fiasco down in the states.
