No kidding. If Matthews signed 12.6 x EIGHT the offseason after carrying the leafs to a cup, literally nobody would be complaining.

And here Legion is advocating massive overpayments to our players again based on PROJECTED cap increases. I honestly can't even take it any more. I can't f***ING take it.
OFC it's more of this "projected cap" BS. Another Leaf Land exclusive when it comes to contract negotiations.

Sundin was a lot more talented than Tavares. As the Dead Puck Era deepened he really simplified his game and played more straight line with power than fully showcasing his finesse abilities which were significant. Why deke and make finesse moves when you could drop the shoulder, pop out the hip and just drive? He was a lot like Draisaitl in some ways playing the simple game, but not as nearly as prolific offensively. Tavares has excessively elite hands, but his skating really puts a ceiling on what he can do shift to shift.
After rewatching some playoff games I'm thoroughly convinced that Tavares was the worst out of the big 4 by a significant margin. Like defensively he is atrocious beyond belief nowadays (probably a big reason they experimented with him on wing). That series winning goal really took some heat off just how bad he really was against Tampa (and Florida too).

I like Willy, but if his ask is too high, its time to explore a trade, or Sign in trade we should get a few nice pieces back and move on

personally I'd trade marner to be honest as he has 2 yrs left on the contract; and I don't think Marner will be worth his next contract, heck I don't think he is worth his current contract

We sign Willy, trade Marner; get assets for Marner and 11m in cap-space which I'd use to get two forwards that together can put up about the same points as marner this also helps us round out roster and spread offense in the line up.

That said, July 1st is coming soon; and it doesn't seem like Leafs have shown any indication of trading marner (which is a mistake IMO); so by default it will be Nylander that Leafs have to trade.

We just can't ice 4 players with double digit AAV that is a recipe for disaster.

Why did mackinnon need it?

12.7 would be 14.5% of a 87.5 cap.

That’s star “panarin, Tavares, seguin, kopitar,” not superstar Money.

That’s a clear underpayment for a guy who has like 10 less goals than ovechkin at 25.
Ovechkin blows 34 out of the water his first 5 yrs in the league....not even close.

The problem is that we the fans look at $$'s that they sign for but the players are looking at cap %'s. The core 4 problem is going to remain until JT is gone because they will eat up the same cap % as now...so even if it goes up a ton...they want a piece of it and we are so unbalanced. We just can't do this 4 players at 40 whatever percent of the cap all at forward and win...it just cannot be done.

If Auston takes 12.34M per year (aka still a ****ton) x 5 years he will come out of it looking like a freaking hero. But unfortunately I think he asks for (and obviously gets) more.
If thats what he was looking for a deal would be done already imo. I think maybe 13.34 x 3 or 4 years. He

Tavares was visibly awful in 2021 playing on a roster with a 41 year old Thornton and a 38 year year old Spezza. I joked at the time you can’t really tell if 19 or 91 is approaching 40, or the difference in skating quality between 97 and 91. Or that he looks like he’s playing ball hockey in running shoes. At least old slow Spezza could wind it up and take it coast to coast and still puckhandle smoothly.

Last time around, Matthews was willing to take a three year bridge deal for around $9M.

But the Leafs somehow managed to trick him into taking a deal that paid $2M more a year and walked him into free agency with NMC the final year.

Boy is he ever stupid.

Matthews is a 1C. And a very good one at that. We waited a long time for one of those.

It would be a real shame to lose him now.

As far as I'm concerned, everyone in the entire organization from Shanahan on down, with the exception of Matthews, can pound pavement. And if they lose Matthews to free agency, everyone from Shanahan on down SHOULD be looking for a new job. Who cares how much Matthews wants.

Just f***ing give it to him.

The fans already see him as nothing but a spoiled American rich kid anyway. Paying him even more just feeds into that perception. What separates privilege from entitlement is gratitude. Rich kids can never admit they are rich.

So they don't feel grateful for what they already have in abundance.

That's Matthews.

Well, the final nail is ready for Treliving and Shannys coffin.
After today, AM has all the power of no trade and end of contract looming 12 months away.
With the probable moving of Willie due to excess demands that we all knew was coming, because we were at the dance before, the core 4 has managed to demonstrate that management of MLSE, is out of touch with the actual team. MLSE spends more time getting hotdog prices up than the reality of winning a Stanley.
.

Maybe AM can leave sone $$ on the table to allow the team to keep Willy. Or maybe winning isn't all that important to these guys. Who knows.
This leaving money on the table is subjective. He could sign for 14 and his defenders will say he could have got 14.7…….bla bla bla

I wouldn't bet the farm on this. I have a bad feeling he'll be shooting for the moon.

History would say AM is out for the money from playing in the Swiss to make money to signing a short term high pay contract to make more money "when" the cap goes up. Now rummors are the same thing he wants a short term deal for when the cap goes up again. Wont be surprised for a 3 year deal for like 14-15 a year.

I do not believe that for a second. If that was his ask, they should have been shopping him. Friedge is confident he is resigning and until he signs, I am giving him the benefit of the doubt that he takes a team friendly deal not more than 13m. That is as positive I can get with the 3 amigos because I am tired of hearing what will Matty, Mitch and Willie want, given their playoff success.

Fully agree, honestly going forward as fans we just need to have zero expectations of this core.

They are proven greedy losers, basically assume a great season and 1st round ownage.

Too many bozos running things;
Tanebaum not firing Shanahan
Shanahan wanting to bring back Dubas
Shanahan then keeping Keefe
Shanahan's new gm already getting owned by the players

Too many losers and entitled players but it starts at the top, coward owner to coward president to coward gm to coward coach to coward players. It's sad but the only way to cope is just to set our expecations to zero, Shanahan with maybe 2-3 more failures will be gone.

Matthews probably gets 14x4, Marner 13x6, Nylander 11x6.
