time to trade him to Arizona is now, want a Lindros type deal. we tried it didnt work.

I'd like him to tay but you have to change up the core. From the hotstove (butmost of us knew this already)

(Paul Maurice also mentioned countless times how much less physical the series was compared to the Bruins one, FWIW).

Sportsnet’s Justin Bourne is fond of asking the question, “Can you really tape grit to the core?” When Matthews, Marner, Tavares, and Nylander are the tone-setters and major ice-time loggers on the team and none really take to the physical part of the game naturally, is it ever going to be able to match up in this area of the game?

The city is voting on whether or not to approve the plans for a new arena. If they city votes against it then the Coyotes will move. We should know by the end of the week if there will even be an Arizona Coyotes when Matthews hits UFA.
Trade Matthews to Arizona, in a couple years they relocate to 2nd Toronto team. Everybody wins

That´s the biggest issue with our core.
Talented and skilled group, no doubt, but none of them have that nastyness that we need. And with (nigh) zero grit and toughness in the top 4 players, it´s not easy to make a deep run in the PO´s and eventualy win another Cup.
The core, Mathews included, doesn´t work outside the regular season. Changes need to be made, hard and painful as they may be.

Marner is arguably the highest skilled player, but his biggest flaw is his inability the shoot the puck which makes it easier to defend him. When it gets to crunch time he has hard time making plays. I don’t know if that’ll ever change.

Ive said it a hundred times, the Leafs dont dictate the outcome of games.

Where does the disconnect come from in regards to people thinking Matthews isn't physical and the stats that say otherwise? I couldn't watch a lot of the Florida series but I remember kyper saying it looks like nobody taught Matthews how to hit and that there's a huge difference between Florida's players and the Leafs players on the forecheck. But the stats also don't support the idea that florida was way more physical? What did you guys see when you were watching?
the hitting stats are utter nonsense. Mitch Marner can bump into someone and Jake McCabe can obliterate someone and both are recorded as a hit. Virtually all the stats fans listen to are full of holes like this.

Possible. He did say he wants to get a contract done with medium term and top dollars in the league. If that's 12.6-13m for 4 years we may as well do it.

Not sure but I believe it was Friedman that said it or tweeted it.
That’s fine as long as the next contract doesn’t have a no move clause. Limited NTC ok.

Senators fan that was in the Yashin camp growing up. So many stylistic similarities between AY and AM.

Big framed, skilled centres with shooting mentalities and a tendency to score from the slot. Great regular season performers.

Problem is, that area where they typically produce from in the regular season is hotly contested come playoff time, especially in elimination games. And like Yashin, Matthews can't wrap his mind around how to adjust and win. Very frustrating as a fan, because the talent is there.

Ottawa traded Yashin after 7 seasons, one season after he was a Hart finalist and finished second in the league in goals. He was right around his peak. The return from that trade set the table for years to come for Ottawa (Spezza, Chara).

Matthews is who he is. Cash in now, and the contention window will stay open for another decade.

Too funny, what though are the unspoken words Auston isnt saying?

"I love Toronto, it's a great place, I intend to stay here!"

Unspoken "If they pay me whatever I ask, for whatever term I want"

Unspoken "if I have approval on all trades, and who they hire as coach!"

That nonsense didn't work for Eichel, he ended up being hated by everybody in the organization.

Matthews didn't perform even with being the 3rd highest paid player in the league, everyone bitches about Marner not being a playoff type player Matthews is no better. Paying him more isn't going to help. Paying him more isn't going to suddenly give him Crosby levels of compete. Paying him more isn't going to suddenly turn him into a real leader, as it is he couldn't lead a two car parade.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I can easily think of 10 current players that I'd take over him.

Eliot Friedman just reported he believes Matthews wants to sign at a medium term at highest cap hit in the league.
I don't think Eliot's wrong, it's plausible that Matthews plays the ever rising salary cap for all he's worth, or all he's overpaid really. A series of 2 year contracts to the highest bidder.

No thanks

A lot of people say "but you'll never win a trade by moving him!"

I say and you'll never win by keeping him, all you'll have in the end is one of the best paid players in the game. Well whoop- de- do!

I still think you need to take a hard look at what is out there in a trade before signing him. Does that mean trade him no matter what? No, but if someone is out there giving you multiple picks AND 2 legit players (an all star level guy and an above average guy)...that allows you to clear up cap space to shop for FA's and possibly use the picks to trade for more guys for this team....you have to see if that is out there.

With that said, I personally am thinking right now its 70% him coming back, 30% him not....but if he does re sign, don't expect a super-team friendly deal. I think he wants to set the market, and the best case scenario I see is $12m per year but more likely 12.5-13 (or more)

Friedman was speculating a short-term deal 3 to 5 years,

A 3 year deal putting him around age 30 to cash in on a 3rd deal thereafter seems to be what he was suggesting possible.

This

In any one game I can see Tkachuk or McCabe knock an opponent on their ass at least once and sometimes twice.

I think back over the season and I can't remember Matthews ever knocking anybody on their arse, sure I can remember him engaging but not once ever rattling a guys spine.
