Matthews will get whatever contract he wants as everone will roll over as always.
13 million? 14 million? sure. 4 year? 5 years? 8 years? sure NMC? sure
Only thing for certain is that he will be the highest paid player in the league.
My guess? 13.5-14 million over 8 years so he he gets PAID into his mid 30s.

Here is Johnny gaudreau asked if he would resign in calgary after the playoffs ended last year:

JG says “yeah I’d love to figure something out, I love the city of Calgary blah blah blah”. And we got a “my intention is to sign in Toronto” from AM. matthews is so not resigning here

What was he going to say "I dont want to be here". He gave the politically correct answer.
I get the feeling he really doesnt want to be here. When he is interviewed it doesnt look like he is having a good time...

Of course he’s not having a good time.
I’m not being interviewed and even I feel like telling them to f.o.
It’s basically the same generic questions asked every day through the whole season. The goal of answering the questions is to not give an answer that will lead to 20 more questions.

Let's take it a step further. These playoffs Seattle, Dallas, Carolina, VGK and Florida all have much less hits and BkS per 60 than the Leafs. Matthews lead the Leafs forward in hits and blocked shots.

VGK have 6 majors. Leafs had 5. Dallas 0 and Seattle 0. Carolina has 1.

Game 1 and 2 the Leafs started off those games very well against the Panthers and kinda got undone by bad goaltending/breakdowns and Bobrovsky standing on his head to keep Florida in it. They were shit in game 3. They had plenty of issues but starting on time wasn't one of them to me except for game 3.
Where does the disconnect come from in regards to people thinking Matthews isn't physical and the stats that say otherwise? I couldn't watch a lot of the Florida series but I remember kyper saying it looks like nobody taught Matthews how to hit and that there's a huge difference between Florida's players and the Leafs players on the forecheck. But the stats also don't support the idea that florida was way more physical? What did you guys see when you were watching?

My guess mathews marner and Nylander want to negotiate with dubas only
A new GM with orders from MSLE board will be running the show not the players
No problem paying mathews but absolutely no interference in player personal .no ultimatums that marner or Nylander or anyone else can't be traded
The leafs need to be able to let their team be managed and the players just play

He can say I want X for Y years and not signing after July 1st. Dubas gave him the hammer by giving him 11.6 for 5 years.
Dubas can't hammer his core.its why he likely won't be here
A good gm would have an idea what the market is for all the core so he could show a vision for a contract extension
This core loves him but f***ed him too

If he was to have no interest in staying i doubt he'd go to such lengths to conspire to prevent a trade.
Why do you doubt that?

He's already settled and comfortable in Toronto so I'm sure has no issues staying another year.

If he has his heart set on testing FA then he already knows and is mentally prepared for a big move next year to a destination completely of his choosing.

The last thing you want to do in that situation is uproot your entire life just for a year in the meantime. (Especially when you can't control the destination).

If he knows in the back of his mind he's going to LA or AZ I would absolutely try to prevent a trade anywhere else in the meantime.

Matthews said his goal is to get an extension done over the next few weeks and it is important to him have a new contract before the season starts.

JG also said that he wanted to sign and they lowballed him that summer.

5 years wouldn't be a bad scenario. Give Matthews 3 more seasons to get something done and if he doesn't you can deal him at 28 with 3 years remaining on his contract where you're almost guaranteed to get a haul, unlike right now where he is a rental.

No chance he signs without a full NMC.

return on a trade will be trash

He may force it

and never once provided a real reason for why?
Closer to family

6/31 teams have no state taxes. 18% of the league

There has been at least 1 tax free team in the finals in 6 of the last 7 cups.

The league needs to confirm this.

If Canadian teams are at a disadvantage because of taxes, this should be an election issue !

All we're saying is, if he is serious about wanting to be with this team and help win a championship, he should work within the financial parameters that allow the team to bolster the weaknesses; i.e. goal and defense

The players don’t care.

They want to win, but NEVER at the expense of less money.

One of the young big 3 have to go.

All high tax teams are.

Canadian teams, LA teams, NY teams, Chicago all pay 14-15% of the cap for stars

Kane toews Tavares panarin karlson kopitar doughty price all got 14-15%

No tax teams pay 12-13%
Benn seguin point stamkos Kuch vasy barkov etc.

It’s a pretty clear and obvious trend and the math works out exactly with take home pay

It feels like we're trying to find issues with how he played rather than just understand while he didn't perform as good as expected because we all know he has another gear, he was trying and doing the things away from the puck to try and make a difference. You can say a lot about how he didn't show up offensively but to say he didn't show up physically or that he doesn't care is pushing a lazy and bad narrative.

I really disagree that Florida was "way more physical". I really don't know how you can come to that conclusion and it feels everytime a team loses in the playoffs it's because of heart or physicality. But they were definitely dirtier and got away with some suspensions and major penalties.

Honestly. If he wants 5 years is that the worst thing?

I mean 27-31…. With his injury history maybe not the worst

In retrospect it probably isn't the worst thing. I just think the commitment and not having to do this again in a shorter time span is nice. Locking him up and building around that I think would be so much better than a 5 year thing... but I agree, it's not the worst thing.

Anyone who compares TO to Calgary has never been to Calgary ;)

I'd give Matty what he wants if we get the Matty that dominated and scored 60 goals and not the Matty we've seen this regular season and in the playoffs. What happened to the Matty that dominated games and used his big frame to drive to the net? Gotta give us more if you want the money and need a different cast to get you back to being the best scorer in the game.

What vote ?

Shouldn’t you get paid for results ?

Not get paid, and try to prove ?

The results are in. Don’t pretend he’s going to change.
I still think he has a chance to find "it" in the playoffs. Dubas screwed up royally with the contracts to the 3 amigos and now the 3 have all the leverage. You cannot risk trading him but you can overpay some if you do not overpay the rest. Marner would have to go.

Interesting proposal this morning. Marner to NYR for Miller and Chytl and sign Dumba. Makes sense except how do the Rangers fit in Marner's cap ??

Somebody explain to me why McDavid, Mackinnon, Pasta, Rantanen, etc. sign for 8 years yet Matthews will only entertain 5/6 year deals???

Seems slightly bullshitty to me tbh

Wants to ring the bell early and often. If he signs for another 5 it won't be so bad, but until he does, he is making Leafs and Leafs nation sweat.
