I mean, that’s your opinion I suppose, but the hockey world doesn’t really seem to agree. Not only did Matthews win 2 consecutive Rockets, the Hart and Ted Lindsay just last year, but I believe he was a finalist for both the previous season as well. Nevermind being top 10-15 in Selke without playing the PK.

I get being pissed about his second round lack of production, I’m with you all, but Matthews resume has him clearly one of the very best in the NHL over this contract tenure.
He’s amongst the best, but he isn’t the best.

If Matthews reads these forums, and I'd like to think he does as he seems an engaged athlete; this would be my honest advice as a lifelong student of sports.

Make it known that you will take less, even if it is only on five year contract. I said he would be the higest paid NHLer, but, what if he shows that he accepted less?

When Marner and Matthews first signed I said the same, if you want to win, take less and free up Cap space. Also send a message. You now have money to burn, you're set for life, you have two more contracts left. Do you want another million collecting interest or would you trade it for a Cup or two and many Leaf scoring records?

Take less than you wanted after the 60 goal season. Then work hard, come to camp healthy and endear yourself to the fans who would love a guy who takes $1.5M less than he could have made.

It can mean the difference between the Second Round and.the Fourth.

5 min penalty and suspended for "the rest of the series". The Leafs will never be allowed to play by the same rules.

As a team the Leafs don't know how to play with the toughness thermostat. They usually let the other team dictate and by the time they respond, their designated tough guy(s) have usually retaliated and crossed the line. They play on the back foot. Playing physical and intimidating hockey is a skill and a team effort. The Leafs don't understand that aspect of the game. Officiating and officiating mentality is something that you have to leverage. Smarten up.

You're right and I do agree with keeping Matthews. It's hard to find a franchise #1 C.

But on principle, they need to draw a line somewhere with these guys. If it's just 500k, why can't he come down for the same amount? It shouldn't always be the Leafs bending over for the stars.

The Leafs management needs to value itself more as an organization. It's one of the premier NHL teams with first-class facilities. No way should they be getting taken to the cleaners when other organizations can get 12.6 x 7 for a cup-winning superstar in Mackinnon.

I don't know if you draw the line on the franchise player himself because if your game of chicken goes wrong, your entire era has blown up in your face over $500K. That's not something the GM wants to report to the president, the president to the board, the franchise to the fanbase...

If you had your next superstar waiting in the wings maybe you pull an Yzerman on Stamkos but we don't have that.

If you want to be a tough organization, why not start with John Tavares? Give him the hard sell on waiving his NMC. Make the actual hard hockey move that needs to happen. Cause I think everyone can live with Matthews, Nylander and even Marner. But Tavares is the weak link that costs a crap ton, who has the C.

I would tell Matthews to take 10.5 or go home. Everybody's waiting for him in Arizona, I would like to still build around him but it's time they learn to take less pay to win.

Some fans really don't deserve what Matthews does for this team. They'd rather have Matt Stajan as the #1 center or something. I understand the frustration with his lack of production in the recent playoffs for the most part, but he's a franchise player and fans should hope he's here for his career. Insane mental gymnastics.

I'd much rather overpay Auston Matthew to keep him long-term than overpaying for a mid-line average player.

I just saw that, if that’s the case I’ll be disgusted. 5 years 14 million would be a travesty. It would be worse than 8 years 14 million. It would be worse than the contract he signed now

He hasn’t warranted earning more than Mack or McD. He should come in at around his same caphit at 8 years
I'm fine with Matthews staying, but if that's what he actually wants for his next deal then TRADE HIM. Trade him out of here all day because that's not the kind of deal you ask for if you want to help your team win. Giving him the same money as MacKinnon would be more than generous already for his body of work and if he wants more than that then get as good a package as you can for him.

Still amazes me that he had 26 shots, many of those pretty dangerous, and he also hit iron probably three times at least, but still couldn’t get a goal. That was a weird series in retrospect.

Pretty insane that his career shooting % in the playoffs is 10.2. Justin Bourne was saying today that Matthews' average shooting distance increased by 4 feet in the playoffs over the regular season.

Think for Marner it increased by 10 feet.

I appreciate what Matthews has done for this team, but at the same time he hasn't been a dominating force as fans hoped he would be especially in the playoffs. Also if he really wants to be a team player and help the Leafs win then why not take a reasonable contract instead of potentially asking for the maximum he can get?

He already got a massive payday coming off his entry level contract, so why not take a little less and show you want to help the team win? Giving him the same as MacKinnon is more than fair considering Mac helped his team to a cup.

20 points in 18 games. Wow, he was really setting the league on fire eh?

Look at the stats of players like McDavid, Drai, etc. then look at Matthews' stats. Compared to the others, he has sucked.

I dunno man but nickle and diming your best player is really not something I would care about. You obviously want the number to be as low as possible and I think it'll be around what the superstars make. Do we really care if he's slightly over expectations? Mackinnon is slated to make 12.6M, I'm sure Matthews is around that ballpark of value.

I care more about the term. I want Matthews for 8 years. None of this bullcrap of 4-6 years.

I would prefer to overpay Matthews by a few hundred thousand dollars than save the money and potentially waste it on the margins.

Put it another way. When the Leafs didn't get the extra 25% retention on Matt Murray in the trade with Ottawa, that was $1.56 million in cap the Leafs had to absorb. A $1.56 million raise on $11.6 million that Matthews makes already gets him around the $13.2 million mark, so what are we even nickel and diming over?

Acknowledging all the flaws of this team and how utterly frustrating the core is, I'm not blowing up the franchise over that kind of marginal money. But yes, obviously the team should try to keep that number down as much as they can.

Nickle and diming to me would be arguing over a few hundred thousand. If Matthews is asking for 13+ million then I'd consider moving him. If he's asking for 13+ AND its not for 8 years then I trade him ASAP. If Matthews is serious about winning with the Leafs then help the Leafs with a good contract that's fair for the team too.

There's more to it than points right? But yeah, he probably has another gear for sure. His 2nd round performance these playoffs was really bad.

Still a player that you still long-term with any of the superstars of the league. 13M for 8 years seems to be inline with what players of his ilk will be making.

Cap should be taking a huge jump for 24-25 with the Covid escrow finally paid off and healthy increases, as was normal, beyond that. It would be fairly difficult to wind up overpaying Matthews on this contract in the context of what it looks like 5-8 years later. I mean, the bar is relatively set with McK and McD, going a bit beyond it doesn’t concern me for Matthews.

That said, we can’t keep having half the cap in four forwards, and a generational pandemic has cost us in that regard, but something has to give to change that up. JT’s contract expiring in two years plus MM and WN coming in on team friendlies might do it, but that’s a lot of ifs.

JT said the same thing before he left the Islanders. Who cares what the players say? He may very well want to stay, but until there is pen to paper, his words mean nothing.
This exactly. Talk is cheap. He is not going to exactly say that he wants out of Toronto and that he is not going to resign. He may very well have his heart set on Los Angeles or Arizona. Don’t be surprised If he bolts.

If we trade Matthews, we don't even have our first rounder to tank.

We can't go into next year with JT as our C #1 unless we're embracing the full rebuild.

Think for Marner it increased by 10 feet.

It seemed like he was either jamming pucks in the crease or taking slap shots from outside the circles, his middle-range game he usually has the most success with was nonexistent.
