You're OK with giving Matthews a bigger contract than Nathan Mackinnon?

Yes. Players salaries are driven based on regular season stats and accomplishments, not playoffs. A player MIGHT get a slight bump due to winning a cup, but it’s not as much of a driving force as people think it is. The reality is that Matthews has the resume to be the highest paid player in the league briefly until Draisaitl or McDavid tops him next deal.

The wrist surgery was September 2021....

He was fine in 2021/22 after the surgery.

This season was 2022/23
Boy the years go fast lol..

Just saying, if someone was reading these boards today you'd have thought the team had announced that they had diagnosed a degenerative wrist condition with no treatment, that a wrist condition in the ongoing was fait accompli. I'm not taking that away from anything I've read or seen personally.

What do you people honestly think he'll get on the open market in the summer of 2024? He's becoming the most paid player in the league regardless, because Dubas f***ed up his first contract.

He'll be offered 14/15per probably by 75% of the league.

Superstars have to look at themselves in the mirror and make a decision. You can't have both in the Hard Cap era.

1. Take less money to win
2. Take max money and be done by mid-April

Not even McDavid can say I want the most amount of money possible and then say I want to win the Stanley Cup.

Bettman has ruined the NHL with the Hard Cap, and these tiny increases every year make is even worse.

Because he hasn't earned a raise. He simply hasn't. These guys are being paid like top 3 players and they have been top 15. If he cared about winning he would take his current cap hit

I mean, that’s your opinion I suppose, but the hockey world doesn’t really seem to agree. Not only did Matthews win 2 consecutive Rockets, the Hart and Ted Lindsay just last year, but I believe he was a finalist for both the previous season as well. Nevermind being top 10-15 in Selke without playing the PK.

I get being pissed about his second round lack of production, I’m with you all, but Matthews resume has him clearly one of the very best in the NHL over this contract tenure.

He had wrist issues and surgery previously. He admitted he was having wrist issues this year, affecting his game... take what you want from that.

If his play was that of last year, I'd pay the man. But, he's had further wrist/hand issues this year, and his game suffered. Which Matthews do we get over that contract? 21/22 Matthews, or 22/23 Matthews? 22/23 Matthews, if it's a sign to come, isn't worth one of the very best contracts in the NHL. If his demand is $15 mil, and we deem the wrist/hand an issue, that will prevent him from being a 60 goal scorer, more like a 40 goal scorer, I'd move him....

“Auston Matthews doesn't plan on leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs.”

Me thinks, it’s the Leafs that may be planning moving on from him.

$15M is another story, sure. But if we’re talking 5 or 6 years at 13M even with some wrist questions I feel like you definitely sign that. I think it’s fair to have some trepidation about where his wrist is at, but unless the Leafs have medical info (evidence of a structural problem that won’t heal) to inform such a negotiation with Matthews it won’t really factor in to what he ends up getting.

I have two opinions here, that Matthews is too talented of a player to walk away from, you will lose any realistic trade by default, and that I'm uncomfortable giving $15Mx8 to a shooter with chronic wrist issues who's already stopped shooting the puck in the manner that made his career.

Apparently he gave you peace of mind. He said he would do a mid term deal (4 years I imagine) so long as it's the most money in the league. That's about 12.5m now so we are talking 12.6 - 13m I would imagine.

Sounds good to me.

This is funny seeing Tkachuk was a ghost in the playoffs before round one this year and also didn’t produce in our series after game 1.

Yeah it’s pretty rare that players are good every single game of the playoffs, but winning erases a lot of sins.

I’m willing to bet Matthews will want 8 years

Also other much worse players than him have had amazing playoff success you can't pin all the failures on him.

Look at Stamkos, does anyone consider him a player you can't win with? He literally sucks in the playoffs

Ok so in 6 weeks it will be precisely the same situation. But lets be real, the lead up, speculation, conjecture, rumor mill, whatever you want to call it is the same when Tavares was in his 2nd last year. So good for you, you proved your right on the most minor insignificant technicality....arguably

And in 6 weeks there might very well be an extension in place. Tavares never expressed a desire to sign a new deal with the Isles as soon as possible, either. He kept things as vague as possible.

He also did get hit hard iirc from some puck or fall. He looked very well after he said he recovered, likely he re-injured it or got hurt else where.

4 years...and then 3 years to Mcdavid...We'll have the M&M lineup...but with a better M. :sarcasm:

Though neither you nor I nor anyone here would have the ability to assess that. Only the team doctor. And I would imagine the team is if they offer him an extension will do so having his medical report in mind.

Can only hope he is more amenable to a team friendly deal this time around.

Something like 12.8 X 6?

Guessing he just doesn't want to be traded somewhere he doesn't want to be for a year before his NMC kicks in.

Say the right things, say you "hope" to stay in Toronto, give your agent the directive to make a deal untenable, say "ahh shucks we tried but it didn't work out" and sign in some nice beachy west coast local when he's a UFA and get a massive bag.

We can't trust him and tbh I don't know if we can win with him either. He showed zero urgency in an elimination game.

His word means nothing and can set this franchise back a long way if he walks for free.

If he says he wants 15m and refuses to negotiate, trade him. NHL teams can't win with players making that high of a % of the cap.
