Sign him 4 years at 14m. If we don't win with him in 4 years, we aren't handicapped with him, and if we win in 4 years, he can go free or resign. No need to sign him to a long contract

Then ship Marner’s ass out. Vegas won with only one guy making 10M. The cap is not shooting up astronmically yet. I fail to see how you build a good deep team with all these guys making obscene amounts of money on the cap.

When Matthews agent brings up the MacKinnon salary… f*** THESE GUYS.

Exactly. They are essentially able to double dip in Toronto. They get literally top dollar salary and extra market perks like you posted here. Of course they won't give a discount but watch when you threaten to trade, the agent will squirm because Marner means nothing in the US markets and Matthews means nothing to 1000 fans in AZ.

Both Marner and Matthews would take 7 figure hits leaving Toronto.

Of course there is less urgency...this news is already showing where Matthews head is at. If he really wanted to commit to the leafs he could and he would but he isnt. Hey matt we will pay you tens of millions more dollars to commit to the leafs...."matt...yea I really like it here and my intention is to stay but you know we will see how it plays out":.....he is totally going to bend the leafs over.
100% he will wait until his NMC kicks in then negotiate the contract from an extremely strong position. Probably will get like 14 x 4 or something like that

“The Leafs seem prepared to make Auston Matthews the highest paid player in NHL history but are still holding out hope it won’t be by a wide margin over Colorado’s Nathan McKinnon, who signed an extension last season at $12.6 million (U.S.) per season”
Sorry didn’t see that in your post just a listing of endorsement deals. Invisible ink?

They essentially need a commitment before the nmc kicks in. It's impossible to make it work otherwise, by make it work I mean the cap structure of this team. It will be a treadmill team that goes nowhere. Dump trucks of cash for top players though,

Hoping? They need to just put their foot down. 12.8m x 5 or 8 lets do it now or we need to trade and your endorsements are likely gone, your call. Thats the deal, not ok Matthews here is 14m for 3 years. It's insanity.

Ya the leafs do need to get some sort of agreement before then but I don't see Matthews camp willing to do that. Honestly nor should they, not their fault Dubas structured the contract to give Matthews all the control. An agent is never going to suggest they do that. Matthews would have to push for it.

I think you will see a some regression for the Leafs when the new big 3s contracts kick in until the cap rises quite a bit. The depth will only get worse if these 3 all get raises.

They aren't doing it to bring their salaries in line with their peers in other cities which was the whole point of the discussion.
Oh...so it's just a perk that we cannot possibly benefit from then? If I am an AirBnb host and my house rental price is the same as yours but I offer a pool for that same cost...is that not something a customer would want?

holy shit just saw Jesper Bratt deal. WTF thats a freakin' steal of a contract. 7 UFA years bought and cap hit under 8 million. Dubas is the biggest piece of trash that has ever worked for the Leafs. nobody will ever change my mind

How can you not be embarrassed to be a fan right now with our management overpaying these bums over and over and refusing to make any changes

Not sure how that relates here.

It would be more the same house could be had cheaper if you’re willing to cut the grass and clean the pool.
People want a player to take less and work a second job to make up the difference. A player would want the same money and then do the extra work to make more. That’s the perk, the ability to make more.

btw any musings if there is a deal already in place jsut waiting for july 1st b/c offically both willy and matthews cannot sign before then?

Most aren’t so insecure to be embarrassed by something that hasn’t happened yet.
If you’re embarrassed by the mere thought of something that’s on you.

Didn't have to give him $15m signing bonuses in years 1 and 2.

That's the thing...we are not asking for a big discount from our guys...we just get mad when they get way more than other players AND get to cash in on the endorsement money at the same time. Why do we have to pay TOP dollar AND they get to make TOP dollar in endorsements? Is the media really that hard on them? If you ask me the media is kissing their ass most of the time with softball questions to make sure they don't get upset.

They had a gm who was a terrible negotiator.
Hopefully the next one does a better job.

So NJ is not a low / zero income tax and the Devils now have Hughes, Bratt, and Hischier at 7.25-8.0 AAV, and Hamilton at 9.0. The core four if you will at 32 AAV combined.

No massive dollars for endorsements either.

everyday I curse the day shanahan chose the hack for a gm. I actually am more pissed at Shanny than anyone seriously

How are the Leafs supposed to compete when other teams even without low/zero income tax do not have to bendover backwards allocating significant cap to handful of players while having enough room to bolster their depth on forward, defense. Seriously this is a freakin JOKE

I can almost guarantee that the money Leafs recieve for endorsement is a massive dollar amount compared to other guys listed on that list

McDavid and Ovechkin make more (almost positive), everyone else, not sure.

Surprised McDavid and Ovechkin have been so greedy during their careers.

Generational goal scorerer who hits like a bull and isn't a sissy

Generational player who jsut put up 150+ points and isn't a push over and plays body and hard hockey

yea... very greedy and do not even show up to play

:sarcasm:

Ovechkin signed for 19% in his prime, that is like Matthews asking for 15.5 million, seems greedy, especially with Ovi's endorsements.

When Matthews hits and has a statline like this then you can talk. still waiting for matthews to actually hit 100 points btw

Here's the Forbes top 10 earners from Fall 2022 for comparison. It wont be all, but gives you an idea where they land. Marner is likely on the 2021 and 2020 list, same with Tavares.
