Heard this mentioned on the radio today. Hope the Leafs can hook him up with a few more sponsorships for a little saving on the cap hit ;)

It is very common for athletes to be gifted cars from local dealerships trying to get some free

Travis Dermott was given an Audi in July 2016 and he had only played 1 game as a Marlie then...

Oh for sure, I wouldn't kick anyone in the ass for giving me a free 911, always love them. When I was younger, the first new car I bought was a bright red 5 speed Acura Integra. I had the stickiest Yokohama tires you could buy and that thing hugged corners like it was on rails. I certainly appreciate a car for what it's meant for.

Nice choice, I loved those Acuras when I was young too. I was surprised on how affordable the 996 generation 911's are, they are absolutely attainable for us common folk. :)

Mine had less than 15k miles on it despite being 15 years old and was the same price as a new Accord. Was an easy decision. Might be harder to find good examples back home though given what the salt can do.

It's a very rare 911, the GT2 RS. It is the most expensive (Starts at 300k USD) and fastest 911 you can buy. I'm so jealous, my wimpy Targa has nothing on this beauty.

Porsche 911 GT2 RS - Porsche USA

Wow... $300k for a car?

Being poor sucks I guess, I would need a second mortgage to buy that... Good for Matthews though, hope it helps to keep him in Toronto for the remainder of his career.

Preach brother!

I never understood why a person would buy a sports car that is an automatic, kinda takes the "sports" out of "sports car".

Last summer I was kicking tires on a SRT 392 and the guy was trying to tell me that a paddle shifter auto is the same "sportiness" as a 6 speed and my response was, what is the sport in driving a car with paddle shifters? If I wanted to play a video game, I'd buy a PS4. (Didnt say the PS4 part to him but it was what I was thinking). I get that auto's are so well tuned that their 0-60 times would be better than a 6 speed, paddle shifters are probably faster than a stick too but the fun in driving a 6 speed is in finding the sweet spot and being one with your car.

Despite trolling you with the Tesla thing, I agree 100%.

Unless you actually take it to a track, 0-60 is overrated. The point of a sports car is to have fun with it, and that involves actually doing the shifting yourself.

Paddle shifters are silly props for guys who think they're pretty much F1 drivers. They aren't. Despite that, they've become hugely popular.

Ha ha, never heard that before.

I find it funny people are bothered by that to be honest, its a funny babism so people repeat it. Then others get annoyed what a weird thing to get annoyed about. We have posters here who clearly aren't leaf fans who are here to purely create chaos and anger but people decide 'Gud Pro' needs to be derided.

Not saying this directed at you, you clearly aren't that bothered others lose their shit over people using it though

Hyman doing the drunk driving add makes him a "gud pro" and an even better person.

I thought that model of Porsche has 2tone hood. Looks weird in that blue. They should paint it Leafs blue for him custom and give him the 2 tone hood back damnit.

Always glad to see our guys getting a little extra money on the side from the market. Matthews NHL friends see him being handed the keys to a Porsche.

Porsche has all but eliminated the manual from the lineup with exception to the new GT3. The Turbo and GT2 RS will only be available in PDK. They are too fast for manual.
Yeah. I know. I like to complain about it on Rennlist.
Sad.
I was hoping he'd be sporting an older non-PDK model.
But I all but assumed he wasn't.

They should paint it Leafs blue for him custom
That's what I thought as well.

I don't want to say it but some of us are old enough to remember Pelle Lindberg. I hate to see young guys with lots of youthful exuberance in fast cars. Matty is mature, he'll be fine but I'd prefer even a Hummer for our star player.

Or Heatley.

Doesn't take much to get excited about something at an age when your testosterone is overflowing.

Honestly I'm happily surprised that Lou Lamoriello approved this because I thought he had a set of rules against personal sponsorships for players which are not affiliated with the team.
You probably can't wear sponsored items when interviewed in the arena or post-game (for example Dion and Lupul wearing sponsored hats). Lou can't ban you from having personal sponsorships outside the arena. The NHLPA would lose their shit, and would have every right to do so.

My guess is Matthews will soon get a big Canadian tire or Sportcheck deal, and a big Bell or Rogers deal (inline with McDavid's).

I do remember hearing about not wearing sponsored merchandise in interviews and only wearing Maple Leafs items only.

Yeah, that can be enforced. They don't want players looking like Nascar drivers decked out in Red Bull and such. I'd rather they allow it, as it would get the players money, and you'd make more in Toronto doing that then anywhere else as a hockey player.

But, you can't enforce this stuff off the ice. It is a CBA issue that Lou has no control over.

As for Tavares, doesn't he have a Tim Hortons ad? I'm sure brands would line up to sponsor him if he came here. The one thing that slightly hurts Matthews is that he has limited national appeal, and certain companies love the patriotic ads with Hockey Canada association. Although, considering the Leafs probably account for around 1/3 of Canadian hockey fans, and most care more about the Leafs than the Canadian National team, he has a boatload of opportunities.

Tavares as a WJC star, and winning international events would be a marketers dream here. The big knock is, he's a pretty dry personality. Matthews gives pretty standard answers but is pretty personable. Having known people who knew Tavares in London, he isn't really. Its why Wendel makes a killing on the charity golf and paid appearance market these days.

The NHL loves Parity at the expense of the Leaf's large fanbase.

Growing up in Nova Scotia, I still saw Sundin's Campbell's soup and McDonald's commercials - As long as you're the (respected) face of the Leafs, I think you can automatically do well on a national level without being Canadian. Once Matthews brings the Cup back to Toronto, he'll be a Canadian hero for a century anyway ;) He won't know what to do with all of the endorsement offers.
