Growing up in Nova Scotia, I still saw Sundin's Campbell's soup and McDonald's commercials - As long as you're the (respected) face of the Leafs, I think you can automatically do well on a national level without being Canadian. Once Matthews brings the Cup back to Toronto, he'll be a Canadian hero for a century anyway ;) He won't know what to do with all of the endorsement offers.
I think it helps to be Canadian, due to how certain companies heavily appeal to patriotic nostalgia. Most notably Canadian Tire and Tim Horton's. He'll still get a bunch of ads and endorsement money. He'll probably be the most popular player in Canada, but he probably is a bit more divisive than someone like McDavid, Toews or Crosby, who they try to advertise wearing Team Canada stuff, and not their NHL teams.

Correct. They do love to use these players to cover the nation with their marketing campaigns. It makes perfect sense.

Fair points. There are definitely advantages there - I just don't think Matthews will be hurting or anything just for lack of being Canadian. He might not get those specific deals, but he can find the work if he really wants to.

I'm pretty sure the Red Bull and Shop.ca hat issue was a team choice. Although, I don't know if other players wear non-league sponsored items in interviews still.
During the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals I remember some of the Boston Bruins players were given a talking to by the NHL because in their interviews they were wearing Boston Red Sox hats. They were told to wear the Bruins hat which would become their design for the 2011 Draft because they added a Stanley Cup Finals patch on the right side of it.

In response to this apparently David Ortiz purchased the Bruins 2011 Eastern Conference Champions hats for all members of the Red Sox that they were wearing in interviews to support the Bruins.

Yeah, that can be enforced. They don't want players looking like Nascar drivers decked out in Red Bull and such. I'd rather they allow it, as it would get the players money, and you'd make more in Toronto doing that then anywhere else as a hockey player.

But, you can't enforce this stuff off the ice. It is a CBA issue that Lou has no control over.

As for Tavares, doesn't he have a Tim Hortons ad? I'm sure brands would line up to sponsor him if he came here. The one thing that slightly hurts Matthews is that he has limited national appeal, and certain companies love the patriotic ads with Hockey Canada association. Although, considering the Leafs probably account for around 1/3 of Canadian hockey fans, and most care more about the Leafs than the Canadian National team, he has a boatload of opportunities.

Tavares as a WJC star, and winning international events would be a marketers dream here. The big knock is, he's a pretty dry personality. Matthews gives pretty standard answers but is pretty personable. Having known people who knew Tavares in London, he isn't really. Its why Wendel makes a killing on the charity golf and paid appearance market these days.

Matthews has limited national appeal? 1/3rd of Canadian hockey fans are Leaf fans? Not so sure about these statements.

Think he just means because he's not Canadian or maybe the rise of the Raps?

Even if he doesn't, i dont think his nationality would matter at all

Doesn't make sense

Yeah, I think being American won't get him the Timmies and CanTire deals, but he'll definitely get others. Like, say, Porsche!

Is it really limiting if only multinationals will want him? We also have some big multinationals, right here in Toronto Canada that could be interested - say like the way RBC sponsors so many golfers.

And he's kind of a big deal in Toronto. So there may be some local opportunities too.

He's gonna be okay. Very okay. His quiet personality won't take him as far as a real character, but he is what he is - and he's "safe" which doesn't hurt.

The Golden Horseshoe accounts for about 1/4 of the Canadian population. Leafs also have high-support in other cities. Realize that Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, and Vancouvers metropolitan area combined is equal to the population of the Golden Horseshoe. Leafs also have wide support in areas that don't have teams such as Saskatchewan and the Marritimes. Combine that with all the people who moved west, I don't think it would be absurd to think about 1/3rd of Canadian Hockey fans would be Leafs fans. We are the most accessable team nation wide to watch for years.

Matthews issue is he's identified more as a Leaf player, than a Canadian one, which helps McDavid, Crosby, and Toews with nation wide branding. Due to the fact Toronto is such a massive market with over 1/4 of the Canadian population living within a 2 hour drive, it really doesn't matter too much. But, I doubt many Canucks or Oilers fans care if Matthews is associated with a product. The thing that helps Matthews is Leafs fans care more passionately about the Leafs than they do Team Canada or WJC hero's. But, its why a guy like Eberle had a national commercial during the WJC.

Due to this, he may not fit into the advertising campaigns of company's like Timmies or Canadian tire. Hopefully, companies like McDonalds and Sport Check value the impact he can have in by far the biggest municipality in Canada. Because you won't have adds with all 4 of those companies.

Porsche has all but eliminated the manual from the lineup with exception to the new GT3. The Turbo and GT2 RS will only be available in PDK. They are too fast for manual.

Unless you are a professional racer the difference is negligible.

Manual forever!!!

Prediction:

AM34 signs for 9.11 x 8 years.

You heard it here first.

He deserves more. And Porsche tops him up to 11 under the table.

Can someone tweet Dubas and AM34 the idea ? Might help in the negotiations :)

Believe it or not, but the cap hit matters strongly to some players...at least to an extent. It's a status thing - and it's a status thing among his peers. It matters to him that it's perceived to other players and to fans that he makes more than Eichel, for instance, whether he does or he doesn't. If he believes he is in the same league as McDavid for example, it's important to him that his cap hit reflects that, regardless if he is already making far more than McDavid does with endorsements, etc.

I can't speak with any authority, but with some of these guys that's certainly how I assume it is.

And I think AM is smarter than that.

His Status is on pretty solid ground.

Why not sign him for 7 x8 years.?Then have the Jays sign him for 4 x 8 years. Can be in the press box nursing injuries for the baseball season. Jordan had a baseball contract.

That is exactly the type of player that will not fit in on this team. Lou's philosophy of putting the logo first will remain.

I am not a fan of Matthews, I think he is injury prone now and should be dealt. That being said, he doesn't sign for anything less than 12 million.

Nylander is close to signing for 6.5 mille. Marner is going to sign for 8.5.
