Auston Matthews 69 goals in 81 games, most goals scored since Lemieux in 1995-96

The observation that old men Crosby and Ovechkin are still putting up good numbers highlights that todays league is incredibly easier to score in and that todays stats need an asterisk when comparing to greater that 10 years ago.
You’ll need a pretty big asterisk from 1974 - 1993 then.

Maybe I’m missing something here but when I calculate Gretzky’s goals per game his first eight seasons I get 0.86 (and I surmise he had decent average assists per game as well). Is the number in the graphic including seasons Matthews didn’t play yet?
No, you are missing something as you said.

No, because secondary assists.
Yup. Inflation at a cheap rate.

Are we seriously comparing Matthews's gpg while he's in his prime, to gpgs of gratzky and ovechkin that spans their entire careers thus far?

Great goal-scorer and all but these stats are intentionally misleading.

Not my graphic but over the first 8 years OV would be at 0.617, Matthews at 0.652. Gretzky is a whole other beast in his early career. That's where OV is a unicorn in that it isn't the first half that set him apart as much as the second half.

Barring injuries or some other unforeseen, Matthews is well on pace to being the only player other than Gretzky and Bossy to reach 500 goals before turning 30 (and those two played in a much higher scoring time).

The fanbase attacks/"rattled"/"coping" bullshit is going to be something that we will be taking a very hard line on, in multiple threads.

Cut this crap out. If you can't handle it, we'll find a way to have the threads without you.

I consider what Matthews and McDavid are doing right now both impressive. Could add MacKinnon and Kucherov to the mix of having good seasons as well. Just Matthews goal scoring been just on another level.

Is Marner back yet? If he didn’t get injured and Matthews didn’t have to play with Domi and Bertuzzi, Matthews would likely have 65 or 66 goals right now.

Unquestionably best goalscorer in the league.

I really wonder what happens if he has another average playoff performance. I think his reg season success will continue to excuse him until he inevitably has a killer post season performance even if it be 3-4 years from now (hypothetically speaking).

He has 8 goals and 18 points in 11 games since Marner has been out. Prior to that he only had 2 goals and 2 assists in 7 games before Marner got hurt.
I'm actually a Leaf hater but if Marner Is out and they're still winning I'd hope they are considering trading him to upgrade their D

Dude is just automatic at this point. It will be interesting to see what gameplan teams will have to counter him in the playoffs. Do you focus on him and have someone shadow him at all times? Do you try to cut time and space for all his linemates and prevent him from getting clean passes?

Well, 8 different players have scored 70 goals in a season. Only 3 players ever have scored 100 assists.

Can’t they both be equally sick?
No they cant be equal. Because 36 assists are secondary...so far. There are no secondary goals.

There is a reason why there is no award for assists but there is for goal scoring.

I dont really feel like arguing this because it seems like Im taking away from McDavid. 100 assists would be sick and super impressive

But 70 goals? Is just up a peg

I remember someone shadowing a leaf player a long time ago in the playoffs. Cant remember the players but basically followed him all over the ice. I seriously feel like it was a senator back in the leaf sens playoff days

Shadowing Mathews could work because he is a pure sniper so getting in his way could be effective

If secondary assists are so easy to get, then there should be much more players getting 100 assists seasons... Yet, here we are....
