I think Sam Reinhart is the better defensive foward and he is 2nd in scoring. Matthews lacks defensive hockey sense to kill penalties, but he is elite puck posession player for sure. His defensive coverage without the puck is lacking though. I’m not suggesting him being bad defensive player, before someone spits out some analytics. To me it’s not a long shot in favor of Matthews vs Reinhart.

However Matthews is a generational goal scorer, really special talent.
You have never watched Matthews play before have you?

Keefe needs to worry less about Matthews and take the time to prepare himself for the playoffs and how he's prepared to make both in game and game to game adjustments. Something he's not good at.
He needs to do lots of things but it has no bearing on what he’ll likely do

But only one has a Matthews leading them...
:sarcasm:
Several seemingly have no one leading them.

Panthers fans lol

Anyone with half a brain takes Matthews over Reinhart 10/10, even with the fluke year Reinhart is having.

So then the post wasn’t ALL made up…

I really wish that just one player’s accomplishments could stand on their own merit. Just one.

But that is not the case. No matter what is said about another player other than Matthews, there is always something to diminish it.

“Way more PP time.”
“Plays with X player.”
“Can’t play defense.”

It’s a shame that during such an historic season, Matthews performance included, player’s accomplishments just can’t be enjoyed for its own merits. This constant diminishing of other players is just a lazy, ugly look.

Elements of every single fanbase do this in all directions, so not really sure why you seem to specifically have an issue with people who do this when discussing Matthews. If your post is not intending to single out one group for this behaviour and I’m inferring that, then fine, I have no qualms.

It’s also a distinction that should be made that not all who talk about these types of things are doing so to diminish others. Often they may just be trying to provide context to support why they lean one way or another in an argument of opinion, which is essentially the entire basis of sites such as this.

I was at the game tonight, and Matthews looks better than everyone else on the ice. Too bad Toronto has some of the very worst, or even the worst goaltending in the NHL. Samsonov is absolutely awful.

The reference comes mostly from the assertions that other player’s entire careers are being compared to Matthews’ performance this season.

But we’re still seeing it right now with current players. It is widely known that Sam Reinhart is having an extremely good season defensively. The mere suggestion of it as one comparable to Matthews’ “Selke level play”, which is objectively a very suspect statement, is being openly mocked.

He doesn't kill penalties because there is no upside to us having a 70 goal guy out killing penalties. It has absolutely nothing to do with his lack of ability to do it.
I wish Matthews would PK more. Seems like everytime he does Leafs get scoring chances.

Matthews is the best PK player on the team.

He's been on the ice for 3 pp goals against all season long in just under 60 minutes....

On a team ranked 25th on the PK, and the lowest ranked playoff team, it doesn’t make sense that he isn’t killing more penalties.

It would certainly improve a glaring weakness for the Leafs.

Sam Reinhart: 694 games: 252 goals

In his 10th NHL season, he's scored 252 goals.

Matthews has scored 25% of his career goals this season alone. People are really comparing Reinhart to Matthews?

No one is comparing Reinhart to Matthews straight up. Absolutely no one.

The mere idea that Reinhart is a great defensive player this season is what is in question here.
