Auston Matthews 69 goals in 81 games, most goals scored since Lemieux in 1995-96

We went from averaging about 400 to about 300. Seems like a 25% reduction in powerplays called, but I know that number isn't as sexy.

The best player on the caps that just so happened to be a physical beast and possess the best PP one timer of all time had an influence on the style of play and PP setup. That I can guarantee you.

I checked this year against 07/08 and it’s 40% difference, not 25%. I also checked the leafs PP opportunities this year vs those Caps and that was 55%. It’s more about accuracy than it is being sexy.

Also of course Ovechkin’s skills had something to do with how they planned their powerplays, I never suggested otherwise. So does coaching philosophy and other factors though. Matthews could play all of every powerplay like Ovie typically did, but he’s not deployed that way.

It's a great achievement.

As a fan who's old enough remember clearly the dark days when the league's highest goal scorers barely cracked 40, the NHL is in a much better place now.

I remember when Jamie Benn won the scoring title with 87 points

Matthews compared to the rest of the top 10 in goals with 4 games to go.

Also if you notice 6, 7, 8 and 10 in 2007-08 were on pace for between 46-49 goals while Kaprizov at 10 this current season is the only one who's missed more than a few games and could've increased to the high 40s.

Then think of how one did this with complete offensive freedom and a major advantage in powerplay time over the rest of the top 10 except Kovalchuk while the other does it with less than most and is among the very best defensive forwards in the game...

Either way he's the best defensive forward among the top scorers by a long shot.
I think Sam Reinhart is the better defensive foward and he is 2nd in scoring. Matthews lacks defensive hockey sense to kill penalties, but he is elite puck posession player for sure. His defensive coverage without the puck is lacking though. I’m not suggesting him being bad defensive player, before someone spits out some analytics. To me it’s not a long shot in favor of Matthews vs Reinhart.

However Matthews is a generational goal scorer, really special talent.

He doesn't kill penalties because there is no upside to us having a 70 goal guy out killing penalties. It has absolutely nothing to do with his lack of ability to do it.

I find it bizarre when people post on things they clearly haven’t watched lol

I'm rooting for him to get it! It would be incredible to see.

I'm fine with him not scoring in the playoffs, but when he's repping team USA in 2026, he better show up!!

For me, his best ability on the defensive end is the ability to win puck battles. If he is in a puck battle along the boards or away from the boards there is usually a good chance that he will be able to get control and get it away from harms way.

I do think he is a good defender.

So are you disagreeing with me or what? What is your argument on me disagreeing how he is not the best defensive player on the top scoring list by long shot?

Is defensive coverage without the puck his strength? My god insecurity of some leafs fan is deep. Matthews have some defensive holes in his games like every player does, his is defensive coverage, which is crucial on the PK. Agree or disagree, lay out your points? Marner was top point scorer of leafs last season and it didn’t stop him from playing on the PK, so your point isn’t valid. There is clear evidence, how leafs coaching staff are willing to play the best offensive guy on the PK.

Matthews has more even strength goals than Slaf has total points
Yes he does....I was just looking at stats....you are correct sir! Does that have anything to do with what I said?

If the Leafs flame out in the 1st round.....matthews goals will be impressive....but ultimately mean nothing. Let's see him lead your team to the promise land. Now THAT would mean something!!!

Is that 51 ES goals for Matthews now on the season?

That would make it only the 11th time 50 has happened and he's now sitting tied for 8th all-time for ES goals in a season.

Adjusting for era, probably only 2nd to Gretz 68 ES goals during his 92 goal season.
