At the end of the day, the spirit of the record is about averaging a goal for all of your team’s games, and all of the official record holders have done that besides Bossy, which I think was the beginning of bastardizing the feat tbh, and why it has slowly evolved over time.
How was Bossy's 50 in 50 the beginning of the bastardizing of the feat, just because he fell off the pace the rest of the way? Why would that take anything away from it? For all we know Richard may have scored less goals in a full 80 game season in '45 than Bossy did in '81.

I'm sorry, 69.5 goals in 81 games, over a 70 goal pace over 82. I find it rather unlikely he scores 69 1/2 goals this year though personally, in fact I'd be willing to lay a significant wager on that.

All of these amazing things happening yet nobody is/has been consistently producing goals the way Matthews is since he's entered the league, the numbers don't lie.

He is best goal scorer in the league, dont believe many people disagree with that.

What about last year?

That’s just false
As a huge Neely fan I always was jaded he didn’t get the credit and as time has passed hardly anyone even knows he did it except die hard fans

Neely actually did it in 44 games in a slightly higher scoring season than Matthews. He didn’t score a goal in his last 5 games that season.

Yes...I don't know how many 50 in 50 stretches Gretzky had, but one problematic reason for counting 50 in 50 for individual player games as opposed to the team's first 50 is related to this point.
I'll credit @TheStatican for this observation, but in 1982, Wayne Gretzky had 31 sequences of 50 goals in 50 games. The season was 80 games long, therefore in every possible 50 game sequence within that season, he scored 50+ goals.

Two years later, in 1984, Gretzky only managed to put together 25 sequences of 50 goals in 50 games. What a slacker.

He has the most goals in the league since his first game in the NHL, but yes, he's pretty lame.

Also, McDavid scored 44 in the year Matthews scored 60. What a lame-o!
Well McDavid is more of a playmaker than a goalscorer. So goals don't define his entire season the way they do with Matthews.

40 is pretty lame when the leading goal scorer potted 61.

What's really lame is cherry picking a single season in which Matthews was battling a significant injury throughout the vast majority of said season when we have 8+ seasons of sample size throughout their careers available.

Now do their careers or take the L.

He's probably the streakiest of all the top goal scorers in the league, so it depends if he keeps up his hot streak, or if he scores 1 goal in 10 games and blows it

His streaks are so streaky they last for entire seasons

so it won’t technically be 50 in 50, because the county officially ended when he missed that game.

This is not at all true, wtf are you talking about?

He could miss 10 games in the first 50, but if he scores 50 in the 40 games he did play, that’s still 50 in 50

Personally never understood the hoopla around doing it in the teams first 50 games but whatever.

When Richard did it, they only played 50 games in the season.

So it’s based around reproducing his feat. If you miss games, the season doesn’t get longer, you don’t get a second set of 50 games to start scoring at game #15, etc

It’s a throw back and an honor to Maurice Richard, who only had 50 games to do it in and zero wiggle room.

That’s why officially, anyone who reproduces it needs to do it under the same conditions as Richard did

The only players to match Matthews to 30 goals at the beginning of the season over the last 30 years are:

1. Mcdavid
2. Ovechkin
3. Neely
He’s been great, just not gonna make it to 50 in 50

Barring some catastrophe he’s a lock for 50+ though which is great
