Its a dumb "rule". If a player can navigate injuries and still score 50 in his first 50 its a remarkable feat.
Still impressive, but not as remarkable. Part of what made heads turn was when there was only 50 games of the season, and a player gave the team an average of a goal for all of their games.

If you want to keep the ‘spirit’ of the feat alive, you either do it in the first 50, or you score 82+.

Because it means more to the team that you were healthy and contributed 50 goals in the first 50 games for the team. It means less to the team if done in any other fashion, even if the difference is minor.

At the end of the day, it’s still a team game.
Wouldn’t it mean more to the team if you do it in the last 50 games when the games are harder and more important?

Aren’t two points in game 1 worth the same as two points in game 82? I don’t understand this mentality that has taken over fans.

At the end of the day, the spirit of the record is about averaging a goal for all of your team’s games, and all of the official record holders have done that besides Bossy, which I think was the beginning of bastardizing the feat tbh, and why it has slowly evolved over time.

No, they aren’t.

Are points in the playoffs worth the same as points in regular season?

Why not take a player who isn’t half as good as Stutzle for like 2 million dollars? Heck that’s a much better deal, hf logic in a nutshell
No one said that.

Fact is there was 1000 posts of fans arguing about the AM/TS comparison including contracts. And 700 people responded 48/52%.

The caliber of player AM is compared to TS is evident in that fact that the poll was even close.

What do you think the equalizing factor is? I think it's the contract. You say it's HF boards. That's fine, but let's not give credence to the straw man you are presenting that because HF will compare long term contracts of players at 13.5/5 and 8.15/8 that we can also make the same conclusions comparing 8.15/8 and 2/(how many years does a 2m AAV player usually sign for?).

Absolutely absurd logic on your part.

Edit: enough digressing. This thread is about AM and 50 in 50 not tim stutzle

You missed the point or are purposely making it about something else. I replied to a post suggesting that people overwhelming think Stutzle is a tier above AM which was clearly a poster disagreeing with the recent poll.

That is nonsense of course, but there is nothing wrong with preferring stutzle + 5.3m in cap over AM. And apparently 52 percent of respondents feel that way.

This feat has nothing to do with stutzle or their respective contracts.

It was clearly hyperbole, I think anyone taking Stutzle over Matthews regardless of contract should probably stick to basketball, the gap is absolutely absurd and that is including contracts, Stutzle is nowhere near a top 15, let alone top 5 player.

The gap is massive.

To make similar comparisons you'd be looking for players in the $4.9 M range (based on percentages) so you'd be looking to compare Stutzle to the likes of Batherson, Tuch, Coleman, Farabee, etc. Go lower in salary and it's Verhaeghe, Marchment etc.

For reference with amazing season Matthews has, PPG wise he is still closer to Stutzle than to Kucherov/Mackinnon/McDavid.

Cam Neely didn't do it in his teams first 50 games and everyone seems to credit him with the feat. Only became an issue when Matthews did it unofficially.

IMO the "rules" are meaningless. What matters is that it's an indication of being able to score at an insane rate for a sustained period of time. A goal per game for 10 games is one thing but for 50 is crazy. To me, that's what makes it significant and for that, any 50 games in a row will do.
That’s just false
As a huge Neely fan I always was jaded he didn’t get the credit and as time has passed hardly anyone even knows he did it except die hard fans

This is a blatant lie though.

The credit goes to Neely goes as far as putting him as a footnote along with Kurri, Mogilny, and Lemieux x2 as players who did it in their first 50 personal games, which is not what Matthews did when he performed his own symphony.

So, you’re lying through your teeth saying everyone seems to credit Neely with the feat.

The actual true statement here is that no one ever harped on about similar past occurrences to the way Matthews did it, until his fans did so, in part because we’re starved as fans for anything resembling the accomplishment and the days of some 70 goal campaigns.

In the end, most, particularly Matthews fans, are taking it all a bit too seriously. No one gets anything for doing it “officially”. It’s basically just a fun thing to follow and honor the first time a player potted 50 while also only having 50 team games available to him.

I can promise you that if Matthews does it or ever does it “officially”, the same folks will be thumping their chests about it because suddenly it’s more “legit.”

I’m confused by what you’re saying here. Could you explain it a little more?

He's also on pace to become the first player to score 70 goals in well over 30 years.

There are levels to this, context matters.

He currently is not on pace for 70 goals.
Also while it sounds amazing we are currently in era where every year somehing historical happen in terms of production Last year it was Karlsson and McDavid, 2 years ago Matthews in RS, Makar/Draisaitl/McDavid in PO.

I'm sorry, 69.5 goals in 81 games, over a 70 goal pace over 82. I find it rather unlikely he scores 69 1/2 goals this year though personally, in fact I'd be willing to lay a significant wager on that.

All of these amazing things happening yet nobody is/has been consistently producing goals the way Matthews is since he's entered the league, the numbers don't lie.

If he gets his second, he'll be 22nd all time by age 26. If you factor in the 80's, significantly higher.

How is he goal wise?
Goal wise he currently competes for first place with famous goals scorers Nikita Kucherov, Sam Reinhart and Artemi Panarin.
