Someone should write a dissertation on the problems with sports culture and use this thread as reference [1]. I'm convinced at least a 1/4 of the people in here are sociopaths.

Online forums rarely make for solid evidence. It's amazing what people will say behind the perceived veil of anonymity that is the Internet just to get a reaction out of people.

If I shrug my shoulders at this, does that make me a sociopath?

I just feel bad for the Sedins, two classless professional (don't know if I can use that actually) hockey players make complete asshats of themselves on a radio station and now the twins are gonna get asked about it, just a waste of their valuable time really.

Nah, they will ask Bieksa about it and he will say something like....

"Co-dependant? Why don't they ask Jordie how his NHL career would be going if it weren't for his brother?"

I'm not saying it isn't a bit weird for them to be saying this, but they obviously aren't fully mature. Not too many 25 year olds and 60 year olds share the same sense of humour.

This "grown men maturity" thing is ridiculously false, your sense of humour doesn't suddenly change once you hit 18 or 19 or 21 or whatever age people seem to think it occurs at.

Actually, yes, it should change when you quit your high school gang of immature friends and see the world. But I guess hockey players (or any team athletes) are a different breed. Like a previous poster was saying, the locker room is a microsociety in itself. I read something about that not too long ago. I'll try to find it if you wish.

I see where you're coming from, but you have to separate on-ice comments and off-ice comments. There are jokes made inside dressing rooms that are far worse than this comment, that in itself isn't the problem. The issue is that you have the captain of the team and the best player of the team making this comment on a radio broadcast. They were representing their team and the league during this interview, and they chose to make a stupid and immature joke. There is a time and a place for a joke like that, and during a radio broadcast definitely isn't it.

I understand that and I have agreed with it saying that doing it over the radio was not the smartest thing to do.

I just think, before people react, they should have a little perspective. People finding it funny does not making them homophobic. People finding it not funny does not make them humorless. I will apologize for comments I made earlier in the thread that could have implied the latter.

At this point, I'm sick of admitting that I found it "snicker-worthy" and being told I'm a homophobe in return, which is laughable to anyone who actually knows me.

Suspend Benn and Seguin, penalize Seguin 20 points in the scoring race and ban the Stars from being playoff eligible for the next three years. This is an out rage. How dare young guys joke around?!

...or have a sense of humor and not overly sesnsitive.

The thing is that you have to learn to respect the sensitivity of others in this world. Just because something doesn't bother you, doesn't mean it won't bother someone else. Sure some kids can just laugh it off when they are being made fun of, but others can't. It is always better to choose kindness.

When you're on the job, you conduct yourself as a professional. Benn hasn't learned that yet apparently.

Can't get overly offended over a pretty vague jab, it could be interpreted in a number of ways. Seems like people are putting words in Benn's mouth, and then getting offended by their own interpretation of the joke.

Players like Bolland, Seguin, and Marchand may be cocky, brash and pests, but then again they are millionaire athletes in their prime who have played major roles on the their teams winning the Cup, and I bet they are more respected than the Sedins as teammates.

You shouldn't mistaken the Sedins' lack of personality for being classy or humble.

The way they conduct themselves on the ice and in the community is why I see them as humble and classy.

The 1.5 million they donated to children's hospital doesn't hurt either.

But none of that plays as well to the intellectually stunted as a joke about "sisters" or frat boy talk like Benn and seguins.

Meh. Seguin called them weird as ****. He's entitled to his opinion, but generally speaking players who represent their team on broadcast media should probably limit their comments regarding other players on other teams to a professional level, and leave the trash talk to the locker room and on the ice. I'm sure the Dallas organization wouldn't be happy with those comments. But there really shouldn't any punishment from the NHL, and Seguin is a young guy still trying to figure things out, mature, and grow up. I'll let his team take care of that.

After the host talked about how the Sedins always do things together and share a room, Benn implied the Sedins may be incestuous (and consequentially engaged in homosexual activities). I'm not sure how anyone would think Benn meant anything other than that. He meant it to be funny, and anyone in that context would know he was implying that relationship. Wasn't funny, was a dumb comment, and probably shouldn't come out on broadcast media from the captain of the organization. That said, I'm sure the Sedins can handle this level of trash talk, and maybe some fans should probably treat it for what its worth-- high school level foolery. Dallas fans also should stop fooling themselves into thinking Benn meant anything else. If Benn wanted to be less robotic/more colorful, there were way more respectful, professional ways of doing that.

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

An exception to your friends? Got it. I'll go ahead and base everything off of what you see in your life. If things don't match up I'll yield to you.

And if you think I'm a bully for not seeing things exactly like you do then I pity you.

Finally, this has nothing to do with the players on my team. My 2 favorite players? Not even close bud. Sure, they're great, but I like how you try to throw that in the discussion. I'm more of a Klingberg/Ritchie guy myself.

I actually think you should and that would be good for you, so go ahead and stalk me on here from now on.

Anyway, you may decide to discredit my experience and the one of others I know, and prefer to believe your friends (or create imaginary twin friends I don't know), but I know what I know and unlike you, I have no team bias in this discussion.

The people who are saying this is homophobic are stretching it if you ask me, and if people judged me by the things I find funny I'd probably be seen as the worst person on earth.

Is that your idea of a tirade, or are we scooting over to hyperbole? As a Hab fan i'd think you'd be sick of it by now.

Whoa, what's with all the outrage over a simple joke? Why are you getting so easily offended by my choice of words? Geez man. I hate it when people get all up-tight like that. Get a sense of humor man. Can't say anything without offending someone these days. Geeeeez.

You go ahead and have yourself an amazing day. Make it count.

Well, you don't have to, but it is good to see things through another's pov sometimes and understand why some may react the way they do and how that may not be the same way that you react. It is good to understand so you may choose to use your words more carefully instead of thinking that everyone should react the same way as you.

it was a ****** comment and would've been better had it not been said. The overreaction and complete hyperbole in this thread is astounding. I don't think anyone here genuinely thinks that the comment is okay. It isn't. But people think this **** doesn't happen daily? it does. people make jokes. Don't pretend like this is the first time you've heard someone say something like that.

the way people got offended by it is what's worse than the comment itself.

I agree trash talk is trash talk. Did Brian Trottier trash talk on radio, or was it on ice?

Was he original? or was he too dumb to think of something on his own and recycled what was said years before?

This isn't about the Sedins.... they've taken such talk before and they'll hear it again... I'm sure they hear stuff on the ice all the time - of course they aren't childish enough to make that public after a game, and especially on a radio talk show. But if they did, I'm sure they would have enough intelligence to come up with something new on their own, instead of repeating what was said before and thinking that's funny.

This is about Seguin and Benn, and you'd think that if they were joking and looking to trash talk, they'd a) do it on the ice, and b) come up with something new. Of course asking immature, stupid kids to think like adults isn't always fair to the immature, stupid kids.

Trottier used homophobic slurs, the Stars players beat around the homophobic bush and sounded like middle schoolers. That's the difference.

Comments like those should generally stay in the locker room, those comments aren't exactly classy....I have friends who've made similar comments, but they aren't professional athletes making millions to play a game. You'd think there would be some sort of professional behaviour. If I suggested/insinuated or broadcast my feelings that people I work with were potentially incestuous homosexuals I'd likely be fired.

I don't think the comments were "that" bad, but they're definitely not good and I have a feeling the folks laughing about it are infact high schoolers or fans of potty humor.

I do agree with it. Hockey players are kept around hockey players, and so they're never really forced to mature because they never have to.

The comment was unnecessary and a bit weird, but not 16 pages of thread-worthy.
