Kitchener - London would be the best hosts imaginable. Two highest attended OHL teams (Kitchener 6900, London 9000). Could see an entire tournament sell out. Take the tournament away from the big cities, put it where junior hockey is played. The only big cities to really succeed were Ottawa and Edmonton-Calgary.
Montreal quite disappointing, didn't even sell out USA-Canada on New Years Eve. If you can't sell out that game, what game can you sell out? 3000 empty seats ...

They should rotate the tourney around Canada. Too much focus on big cities and big sponsors. Hockey is supported across the country, not just in the big cities. Doesn't make sense to shut out most of Canada from taking part in it.

Capitalism has its limits.

Heh, as if Canada is the only country where this tournament could be hosted.

You people do realize that even with 3,000 empty seats at the Bell Center, it's still double the attendance possible in all these great juniors cities like London and Kitchener, right?

I'd be supportive of a Kit-Lon combo and there's no doubt they'd do an admirable job however there would have to be an incredible amount guaranteed revenue (much like the Mem Cup) in order to compensate to a vast reduction in seats. Even at 9,000 seats, the London arena is even way too small for what HC has been getting used to!

People also have to consider that Toronto has a much larger multicultural population than Montreal. Pretty sure tickets would sell even if Japan was somehow in the tournament.

Pricing was probably an issue. Yes it's a good tournament and quite popular as of late but prices for tickets have gotten out of hand here.

I agree but I am not sure it will get better from a fan/ticket price perspective. The tournament is finishing strong and, my guess, will make a ton of money. 2017 will likely be even more profitable. Don't be surprised if Hockey Canada pushes the envelope in 2019 / going forward.

Great job Toronto. Montreal take notes. What a joke of attendance and atmosphere in Montreal. Didn't sell out one Canada game and had 3,000 Empty seats for new year's eve. Toronto thx for showing Canadian pride.

The profit would be peanuts.

Not to mention the glorified shinny feel it would have to it. Nice to have the cash-grab Winter Classic where they can cram in as many as they can, but the World Juniors in it's entirety? That would be just horrible.

I am from the states so I may not be correct when I say this, but doesn't Montreal/Quebec want to secede from Canada? Could that partially be a reason as to why the attendance was so much lower in addition to the ridiculous ticket prices?

No. It was the prices.

Vancouver set the attendance record until the Ottawa tournament, and then Calgary-Edmonton set it again.

But the one thing common amongst Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa, they all have Major Junior teams, and those teams have a good profile within the city.

Hockey Canada isn't a tough sell in Toronto, even though they're not a great junior city. Memorial Cup was an afterthought when it was in Mississauga a few years ago (I know, that's not Toronto proper, but still GTA). Ticket prices aside, Montreal does not support junior hockey. The number of Q teams that have come and gone in Montreal speaks to that.

email just sent to this years package holders. I wonder how many people will be stupid enough to bite the hook before knowing the 2017 prices after seeing how hard it is to resell games if they can't attend.

2017 IIHF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP TICKET DEPOSIT

This will be your final opportunity to secure deposits for the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Existing package holders will be able to secure 2017 tickets by committing a $150 non-refundable deposit for Toronto or Montreal ticket packages.

Each seat will require a separate deposit (Ex: four ticket packages require four deposits).

Package holders are only able to purchase up to a maximum of four 2017 deposits.

The 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship game schedule will be confirmed by July 2016.

The Toronto ticket package will consist of 12 preliminary round games, including four featuring Team Canada, as well as two quarter-finals.

The Montreal ticket package will consist of 19 games, including 10 preliminary round games, two quarter-finals, two semifinals, the bronze medal game and gold medal game. In addition, Montreal will host the best-of-three relegation round.

At this time Team Canada’s pre-competition schedule has not been confirmed. If tickets for Team Canada pre-competition games are included in event ticket packages this will be communicated in advance to all deposit holders. It will not be an option to remove pre-competition games from event ticket packages.

2017 ticket deposits do not guarantee 2015 pricing or seat locations.

So, you can put a non-refundable deposit down for tickets, not knowing how much they will cost, what seats you will get and may have to pay full price for exhibition games. When the packages didn't sell out this time, why would anyone put down a deposit now?
