Toronto saved the day.

Did the day really need to be "saved"?

It appears that HC simply misjudged the market and put prices too high for the Montreal package. Count me as one of the many who initially intended to go to a game or two but felt like there were too many other ways to spend a few hundred dollars that would give my family more bang-for-the-buck.

It's easy to say that the tournament would sell out in Halifax, Regina etc. but I'm not so sure based on the prices that HC is going for today. It seems they want to gear it towards corporate sales and sponsors, which I think is a mistake.

And as far as the "real hockey" fan argument goes - I just spent the better part of a week in freezing-cold arenas watching my kids play hockey in different tournaments. All for about $3-5 per game in front of "packed houses" of about 200 screaming crazy people. That to me is "real hockey" and you can't match this sort of supercharged & tense atmosphere in a building that seats 20,000. I'm content to watch the WJC for free on TSN like I always do, though next time I will look for some of those free tix or even super-cheap StubHub ones.

I'll agree with you that yes, you get the ticket, and that is a bonus.

But Scalpers are out to make money.

THey often buy tickets from Stubhub themselves, and mark up at the arena to those who want to buy a ticket on their way into the arena...

and often don't like to wait to the last minute to walk into the arena.

if you are willing to wait until the last minute, or just after the game starts, and are willing to hit a number of scalpers, than yep, scalpers can be cheaper.

I'm really surprised at those ratings. It seems to me like people don't care much for this tournament anymore.

Most people I know seem pretty indifferent.

Canada/USA tv ratings was the top-rated hockey game on any network to date in the 2014/15 broadcast year, the third highest World Juniors preliminary round game on record for TSN and the most-watched preliminary round game on record for RDS.

Preliminary overnight data confirms an average audience of 3.6 million viewers tuned in to TSN (2.9 million) and RDS (706,000). Overall, 8.5 million unique Canadian viewers tuned in to watch. Audience levels peaked at 6:24 p.m. ET as 5.9 million viewers watched Team Canada cement its 5-3 win with an empty net goal in the final seconds of the game.

The 2015 IIHF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP marks the first tournament that every Team Canada preliminary game drew an average audience of more than 2 million viewers.
Non-Team Canada preliminary round games on TSN averaged more than 525,000 viewers – marking the highest average audience ever for non-Team Canada preliminary round games.
Team Canada games on RDS have attracted an average audience of 474,000 viewers – a new record for the network.

A positive. This means more TV coverage in the future. It may, however, also require 2 large arena host cities.

Toronto has done a great job. The atmosphere was great. I think Gord Miller took a shot at Montreal few times during the broadcast, haha.

All I'm hearing is that the ticket prices were high in Montreal and that was why no one went..To me this just sounds like people crying "Montreal got screwed" when in reality prices in Toronto weren't that different, maybe a little cheaper but still pretty high! So how come the tournament has been a success in Toronto and an absolute failure Montreal? Please I'd like a response other than mentioning ticket prices..thanks.

Also I think this puts to bed any talk that Toronto is just a Leafs town. This tournament has shown how crazy Toronto is for hockey, the atmosphere for games has been great.

Lots of excuses here given by the Montrealers. The fact remains that one city supported the tournament exceptionally (Toronto) while Montreal did not.

I'm curious how these Montreal ticket prices compared to previous years in Edmonton/Calgary and Saskatoon/Regina. Both the AB and SK tourneys were wildly successful.

It's become apparent that this tournament isn't as popular in French Canada as is it in English Canada. Agree with other posters, in 2016 move the second city from Montreal to Hamilton or London, places where the games will be properly supported.

Heard that, too.

I have no doubt with the "pay off / playoffs" in 2017, Montreal's games will sell out. I assume the people/corporation who bought Toronto in 2015 will be obliged to buy Toronto 2017 - it was likely part of the package they paid for this year. The profits for 2017 will be huge.

I think it would be huge in London. I doubt they move it though

There was no payoff. They were asking Montrealers to pay huge prices with few playoff games. It didn't work. In 2017, when Montreal has the playoffs, it will sell out.

They were asking Toronto to pay high prices for non Canada games for the first part of the tournament and they destroyed Montreal on that front. The whole price issue isn't Montreal isolated. Toronto ticket prices are high too. We'll see in 2017 how a real round robin is supposed to be hosted and supported thanks for coming out Montreal.

Enjoy your "pay off" in 2 years loll

Glad Montrealer's are putting this tournament back into perspective. It would sell out anywhere else in Canada but not here , and never at these prices. If they put the prices down in 2017 then probably you'll be looking at filled seats.

I think that the main difference between English and French Canada is that this tournament seems to be followed by both die hard and casual hockey fans while in French Canada the only people that I know that follow the tournament are already die hard hockey fans. I really believe that a vast majority of people in Québec are Habs fan only and could not care less about the rest of the hockey world.

Even some sports writer over here once described this tournament as « anglo-canadians going crazy for a bunch of teenagers »...

Hope you're right. Hope Toronto sells out in 2017. Hope Montreal does as well.

Toronto fans are willing to overpay compared to Montreal fans. The Leafs sell out every game at outrageous prices, despite not having a good team in a decade. Montreal fans would never show up like that.

RDS's numbers have been terrific which contradicts the belief, by some, that Montreal/Quebec people don't care about this tournament. Again, without a payoff / playoff, it is hard for anyone to pay top prices.

Oh I'd think Montreal will sellout the medal rounds if Canada is involved but how will they do for the preliminary rounds with Canada or the U S not being there? Montreal had some great teams for the prelims. Canada, U S and defending champs Finland. How well will the tickets sell without those teams?

To buy the playoffs, they will be required to buy the round robin. Remember, some, not most, of the packages were already sold this year. They have 2 years to sell the rest. It will get done.

Remember guys, it is not a competition. The money goes towards the development of Canadian hockey players. That is a positive. Hope they both sell out.

I know but we all know Montrealers love slamming Toronto whenever they get an opportunity, I just enjoy returning the gesture

It seems as though this tournament has gone way too corporate but that is the reality of business these days. IGrass-roots smaller cities get left behind and only the large NHL arenas get to line up first for handouts. Would love to see this tournament in Kitchener or Kelowna but that realistically won't happen. This tournament is immensely popular in Canada

I would love to see an all-outdoor tournament. Somewhere small. Somewhere unique. Perhaps far up north.

Would love to see this tournament in Kitchener or Kelowna but that realistically won't will never happen IMO. This tournament has become immensely popular in big league Canada (except for those guys in Quebec) and it seems as though the two-city structure is gaining momentum. Still say the Ottawa 09 tournament was the best all-around experience in terms of fan support and action on the ice!
