I think they will have a strong finish. Two extended breaks with ASG and bye week and guys getting healthy.

But what's nuts is people thinking we're in a playoff position, second in the Atlantic. We're not. I don't know OTT's schedule in terms of B2B/difficulty, but I'd trade their record for our record any day of the week.

Ottawa has a tough stretch of games coming up so hopefully they will lose some games.

1/14 Tor
1/17 @STL
1/19 @ CBJ
1/21 @ Tor
1/22 CBJ
1/24 WSH

2 Toronto games are not sure wins anymore, Leafs are pretty good this season.
2 CBJ games, could be 2 losses against a very good CBJ team

Throw in WSH and STL and it is not a stretch to see them lose more games than they win in the next week. Means nothing if the Bruins do not win more than lose.

I think we'll miss the playoffs by 4-5 pts. Toronto, Tampa and Ottawa are all going to be problems. Despite the tragic circumstances, we've been quite lucky that Ottawa lost Anderson to his family matter for so long.

Bruins schedule and their struggles

My brother pointed out this series of tweets about the Bruins tough schedule as a possible reason why the B's are in a hole. Boston and Florida have both had real tough schedules. Both teams have played alot more 3 games in 4 nights series and 4 games in 6 nights than the rest of the division. In fact, the Bruins have played eleven 3 in 4 and thirteen 4 in 6. Ottawa and Toronto haven't even come close to those numbers.

The difference in numbers is very surprising actually and could explain the hole we are in. It's tough to hope that the other teams face a similar schedule in the 2nd half of the year. But this could be a reason why the team hasn't panicked (yet). You can't excuse this as the sole reason why we have disappointed but it's interesting to look at.

Topic was also covered an Hockey Central yesterday and they severely chided the NHL for creating the schedule situation. Couple the imbalance you point out with the very minuscule amount of points the B's have managed in games when they have gone with a back up and you have the main 2 areas of concern with seasons current situation. Banking a mere 4 - 6 more points in games with BU's would make all the noise moot. They would have been pushing the Habs for first instead of worrying about the teams with games in hand and others lurking behind them in the standings. No guarantee any team with games in hand can turn them into points let alone win them all. No matter what transpires the Bruins have to first and foremost help themselves by winning more games. Getting on a good run at some point is a must.

In terms of schedule between now and the trading deadline, the schedule may not be as condensed but the quality of opponents doesn't appear to let up.

of the 13 games between now and the trade deadline they have Penguins twice, Chicago tonight, Montreal, Caps and the west coast tour of LA, Sharks and Ducks. They also have Leafs and Tampa, who they are fighting with for a playoff spot.

There are a few other "softer" opponents that in normal years we would chalk up those points but nothing seems to be a given this year.

It was my thinking they need at least 8 wins during this stretch before the deadline to at least not be sellers at the deadline.

End our misery early .Leafs have lost two in a row ,Maybee coming back to realty.

They've been those 2 games without Rielly but he should be soon back.

So now I guess Ottawa has 2 more points with 5 games in hand& Toronto is 1 point behind with 5 games in hand.
Even somehow Buffalo is just 5 points behind with 3 games in hand.

Not according to Coaches Corner tonight . Pretty sure Don Cherry mentioned he won't be back soon .

Updated through 50 games:

  • Record vs teams over .500 = 7W - 12L
  • Record vs teams at or below .500 = 16W - 15L
  • Combined record of opponents in Bruins wins = 228W - 247L (.480 winning percentage)
  • Combined record of opponents in Bruins losses = 351W - 347L (.503 winning percentage)

*I have combined regulation losses and overtime/shootout losses, as there are no loser points in the playoffs.
*The team win/loss records are recorded at the time that the games versus the Bruins took place. Not the opponents current win/loss records.

Looking at it more closely and given the level of disfunction, we're really not out of the question for a top 5 pick. Obviously Arizona and Avs are locked into 1-2. But the rest? Man that is WIDE open given the games in hand and 3 pt games.

Marner also takes the rookie lead in scoring, was impressed at that stat.

Just what the Bruins need, not one great young player on the Leafs but 2.

The last time this Season the Bruins officially dropped to 9th, they went on a win streak. Who here would wager that they'll do it again?

The ONLY thing saving the Bruins right now is no other team has gotten hot.
