So if Dubas isn't renewed, the plan will be to let him go the minute the Leafs' season is done so Shanny can bring in a new GM to negotiate the Matthews contract? (Edit: Not solely to negotiate this obviously but certainly getting the new guy in ASAP so he can take that on will have to be on Shanny's mind).

Just thinking out loud here but if Dubas had been extended or simply had a year or more remaining, I imagine he'd be reaching out to Matthews' agent sometime this season to set a timeline for discussing an extension. But with his future unclear what are his marching orders on this?

I found this morning's presser interesting. My take: Dubas will almost certainly be leaving at the end of the year.

If the Leafs don't go deep, he won't be offered a contract.

If they do go deep, he will go to the highest bidder as a free agent after he wasn't extended here.

I think he's done a fine job - I'm not sure how i feel about this - but this is my sense of what will happen.

I'm not much of a fan of Dubas as a GM, but I'd still extend him.
I say it's a bit of an odd thing for the team to do when they've got money to burn. (Or used to have money to burn.) Giving Dubas a short extension doesn't preclude firing him. This may be by Dubas' choice to wait on an extension because he's confident he'll earn a lucrative one next summer. Or maybe he has an escape plan like AA.

So losing by a goal to the 2 time defending cup champs while outscoring them means a failed approach?
Wow, what an awful take.

Unless you haven't been paying attention, it's 6 straight years of first-round losses. 3 of the past 4 post-seasons they had a 3-2 or better lead and blew it. The past 3 series the Leafs were the higher seed and lost.

So no, it's not because they lost by one goal to TB, it's because no matter who they play, the lose.

Maybe you can take another crack at it and tell me, if this approach isn't a failure, how has it been a success - key part being here post-season success? Go on, take your time.

Here's my prediction: I don't think Kyle Dubas himself will want to stay one way or the other. Regardless, even if he go far or not, I think he's personally offended by how his contract situation has played out.

I predict he'll walk similar to how Alex Anthopoulos did.

I don't think it's like that, he doesn't advance in the playoffs, he doesn't get extended. I don't think he will go running after money in FA, Toronto will be more then happy to pay him a lot of money for a deep run.

He'd likely would like to see what he started play out.

this is what I took away as well. I don't think enough people are considering that it's a possibility this situation is exactly where Dubas wanted to be. There could be a handful of jobs available. I know he's really close with Doug Armstrong, maybe Armstrong goes to President and hires Dubas to be a GM in STL. Or maybe Minny or Philly opens up?

i don't get this take? Why wouldn't he take more money and get the hell out of this market? That is definitely an attractive option and I wouldn't be surprised if that's on his mind.

Because how many people do you know would do all the heavy lifting and then get the hell out of town when there in contention to win a Stanley cup? It's taken them five years to be a top of the NHL standings.

I know I would leave a top 5 team in the NHL and one of the most historic franchise in the league to go rebuild and waste another 5 years in a city like Arizona/Chicago/Philadelphia/New Jersey, because no other top team is firing their GM.

Lock up the Dubas passed the tests thread. Shanny said no
Zero idea why Shanny is the one evaluating if Dubas passed the test

Shanahan and dubas and Keefe I guess are all tied together. If your firing dubas then Shanahan should be sent far away from this org as well

Dubas deserves this year and we should reevaluate from there

Shanahan is really only here cause it would be weird removing him bringing in a new President or giving dubas the double role for a season

He barely adds anything and whenever he speaks he's not saying anything of importance.

Dubas at the miminim faces the hate/memes/criticisms front and center. Shanahan is shield heavily

money talks, Stevie Y literally did this exact thing.... He basically built Tampa and went to Detroit. It's not unheard of. Same thing with Burke, Burke had taken Anaheim to a cup and the roster was still good and he decided he wanted to move on and came to Toronto. Sometimes you just need a change.

Stevie Y left to further his legend tbh

He's one of the best DRW ever. If he can build a super contender along with his playing career he probably gets remmebered as the bgreat DRW individual ever (ahead if Howe, Lidstrom etc)

The Dubas non-contract renewal seems to put the GM into an evaluation mode separate from the Shanaplan. Nothing really wrong with it and should be business as usual, but does create a sense of urgency to see some results.

Though a bit of a strange move from Shanahan - if Dubas' flops, that's on him as much as anyone else. At this point he Dubas' and Keefe are a trio joined at the hip for better or for worse.

They'll keep him unless he misses the playoffs. The entire media will work overtime to keep "their boy" employed.

I wouldn't exactly call Dubas' popular amongst much of the local/national hockey media

Just watched the presser and felt that there was alot more humility in Dubas attitude than I had previously seen.

It's not like this short interview matters much at all but it was positive to see because it felt like there wasn't one bit of excuse making which is the last thing you want to see at this point.

Hopefully thru all the underachievement, everyone in the organization understands nothing will be handed to them just because of their insane talent level and that winning the stanley cup might be a little harder than previously thought.

I wouldn't think this would be the automatic end of Shanahan. Having a GM below him allows the broad vision to be executed with some separation... though it would depend on how badly the season goes (in theory). If for example we're in Connor Bedard territory for whatever reason, I could see President and GM getting flushed.

Didn’t he just signed a lengthy extension?

Dubas gave Keefe an extension so he didn’t have the uncertainty over his head, quite the statement Shanny is fine with it.

I know it will be rationalized away, well here anyways, but having this out in the public really diminishes Dubas. To my mind, it also means Shanahan is going to be more hands on this season.

I doubt that as Dubas was the person who brought it up.
