Just sayin', Cleghorn, Makarov and Hull not exactly sparkling personalities.
Cleghorn was also known as a mentor, so that's something.

And they don't have to be friends. I think all of them have skillsets that will translate well across a variety of circumstances. I don't know if I'd put Hull and Makarov on the same line since they're both puck dominant players, but other than that I don't see any issues.

They're not on the same line.

From 1987-88 to 1992-93, Steve Yzerman was out-scored by only two players- Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux. With 732 points during that span he had 100 more points than the next-nearest player in the league.

Selke, Lindsay, Masterson, Patrick, Smythe and 3x Cup winner.

"No one competes more than him," Chelios said.

"He's the best leader I've ever seen," former teammate and fellow Hall of Famer Luc Robitaille said.

I actually feel like this is about the right spot for him. I know he often goes much higher (by my count he hadn't dropped below 35 in years and often went around 30), but I think considering both position and resume that was too high.

Also I know I'm up but I'm thinking very hard about this pick. I think I know where I'm going to go but I'll entertain trade offers for the next hour or so. Note - I'm not looking to move out of the round entirely.

We come back to that argument again of Lafleur vs Potvin or best player vs value. Yzerman is more valuable than several players that have been taken before him. And on an all-star team like all of these are, his role wouldn't have to be as polarized as it was in his career: scorer/playmaker OR two-way player, especially with Howe on his wing.

I guess part of it on my end is I am a bit lower on his value than others. Part of that is it's so hard to reconcile both ends of his career into a cohesive whole.

Edit: But if this draft had a run on Cs rather than Ds, for instance, he could definitely end up going higher and not look out of place. Certainly at worst the second best C on the board right now.

His plus minus during those "selfish" offensive years was light years ahead of Sakic at the same stage of their careers. Plus he did deliver in that role at a Gretzky/Lemieux rate. Then became one of the best Cup leaders ever. He could do it all, it just depended on what was needed from him.

I like Yzerman-Howe as a duo also.

He's not some obscure player where I'm looking to be convinced. I remember Yzerman - watched him plenty and even think of him rather fondly. I do think Yzerman's playoffs are a little bit up and down (but he does have that signature run to anchor on).

FTR I'm not as high on Sakic either. I generally hate the DPE.

Also - holy hell am I glad I'm not in the Fischer conference. Just on the back-end, that Conference has Cleghorn, Shore, Pronger, Chelios, and Potvin. Oh and Bobby Clarke, Gordie Howe, and Mark Messier.

Jesus any team that comes out of the conference is coming out on crutches.

I've got Gordie, so if Cleghorn, Pronger or Potvin want some - come get it!

Adjusted sizes.... Gordie's going to need every bit of his farm strength:

Pronger
6.50220

Potvin
6.08215
[TBODY] [/TBODY]

Sprague
6.17225

Seriously thought of taking him with my first picks but I've had him a few times, nice to reunite Howe and Yzerman! Yzerman used to be criticized for not using his right winger after MacLean, no issues now with Howe.

The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs will select, with the 45th pick in the 2022 All-Time Draft:

D, Earl Seibert

He's a big, right-shot, two-way defenseman who can play in all situations and play them well. With a retro-Smythe and 10 times an All-Star, this guy is going to fit in well with the crew we're collecting down here in Roanoke.

Would have been my choice if Pilote/Cleghorn were gone. One of the last to be well-rounded.

A solid partner for Lidstrom.

I targeted him awhile back and was thinking on it. Cleghorn was obviously above him for me, but Pilote's lack of PK put him behind Seibert on my list.

I went into this draft really wanting two #1s, and I know that by the time I pick again, unless I get *really* aggressive with a trade, there won't be another one available. And I wanted both to be complete players.

Pilote wouldn't really fit with Lidstrom anyway.

The Montreal Canadiens will select one of the last defensemen who brings everything to the table, Sprague Cleghorn, D.

So, we split the baby as co-GMs in terms of getting our wishes with the roster. I wanted Makarov - Pilote, and you wanted Cook - Cleghorn. But I guess not having your preferences always line up is the price of trying to draft the proverbial "last guy in his tier" and letting the rest of the league make the OTC decisions for you.

Frankly, two Franks are better than one.

Chicago welcomes back Frank Boucher, C

Frankly it's bullshit you got more likes than me for our respective posts.

I think he's BPA (or best skater, I should say) by a pretty good bit at this point. If I hadn't had him in the past I might have gone with him again.

Edit: I will say, with Nighbor and Fetisov, you definitely have the softest team in your conference. Keep Cleghorn away from Nighbor at all costs.

Frank Boucher was the player I was referring to when I said there are very few great playoff performers coming to mind from the late-1920's and 1930's. He was one of them.
