I’ll complete my top 9 and go with an all-time great cornerman who will bring some needed toughness and physicality to the Nieuwendyk-Bailey line. I think that’s a great fit. He and Northcott will be pretty tough to handle on the left side on the 2nd and 3rd lines. His offense obviously wouldn’t be great for a top 6 role here, but he can still chip in and I think he fits right in as the third offensive option on a 3rd line. Both Nieuwendyk and Bailey can score, so Cashman’s role will mainly be to work the corners, get them the puck, and be a physical presence..and policeman if necessary.

LW/RW, Wayne Cashman

Got a big hole to fill on my PP and this guy fits the bill so I have to take him a bit higher. The General Andrei Markov, D

Markov was such a pleasure to watch. I watched his entire career in Montreal and he was quite underrated by the mainstream hockey media. He was so damn steady back there.

I took him mostly for his powerplay wizardry but I think he was steadier back there than a lot of people give him credit for.. its a shame he lost some prime time to injuries though.

First unit is: Alexander Ovechkin - Syl Apps Sr. - Bryan Hextall Sr. - Andrei Markov - Brad Park

I'll get in on the defensive forward/penalty killer trend here with Don Marcotte (F). He seems to have a bit better even strength scoring than most of the other options (could be the Orr effect, but he's playing with some pretty good teammates here, so...), killed a ton of penalties in Boston, and shadowed the opposition's top players (like Lafleur). Anyway, welcome to Portland, Don!

A poor man's Lidstrom. The master of the stickcheck and stretch pass. Never out of position. Creative with the puck to open passing lanes. Always solid no matter who you stuck him with. Very underrated player and strong. I never saw him outmuscled or even phased. He had a big shot too but didn't use it enough. Put up solid point totals through his career. His rush defense suffered a bit after his knee injury.

Montreal still hasn't replaced his QB skills, especially on the powerplay. Romanov and down the road Norlinder might help.

Btw, unless overpass's "DVsX" is something very different than how we've used that initialism in the past, it's not something that measures defensive play for anyone. It's putting point totals by defensemen in context, which should not only illuminate different scoring environments, but also how different positions were invited to participate in the play (e.g. Erik Karlsson played in a lower scoring era than Paul Coffey, but he also played in an era where teams were only putting one defenseman on the power play for the most part.) So you'd look at how far Karlsson is ahead of Brent Burns on the scoreboard without any forwards cluttering the list up, or how far behind Bobby Orr Guy Lapointe was.

Finnigan is a good pick and I was considering him for my 3RW part but I decided to go in Letang's direction at the 11th hour.

The biggest problem with "retro Selkes" is that people want to talk about them as if they're real things and not an attempt (good or not) to reconstruct information. Same thing as adjusted heights. It's irresponsible to say that Harvey Pulford was 6'4", but we do have a quick thumb scale to determine that no, he was not a small hockey player, not by a long shot.

Just a quick search in the French papers turned up a rave about his defense and lots of raves about his speed, which I didn't bother with because they are so frequent:

Finnigan

I think I am up right?

I will pick Roberto Luongo, a guy who had the sunburst logo on his shoulders, fitting as he carried the Florida franchise.

Hate to take a goalie before one last core real hockey player, but just to preempt the run on backups. At least Luongo is a guy I really like.

I've got another stretch of 3 picks in the next 20, and some needs I'd like to fill, but the first thing I'm going to do is scoop up an exceptional defensive forward in Blair Russell.

I think he's every bit as good as Lundqvist all time.

Lundqvist, Price and Luongo are three of the best goaltenders of their generation. Yet they have only 2 Vezina Trophies among them. Kind of surprising when you think of it like that. Zero Stanley Cup’s too.

I’m not at all knocking them. Just surprising, and it's a shame really considering how good they each were in their prime. As a Habs fan, I’m hoping Carey can get 1 or 2..

Price has been hurt a few years in his prime and has had no help. Advanced stats might bail out his legacy, we'll see. Carey Price Had an Amazing Season with the Montreal Canadiens

I don’t know about advanced stats, but having watched essentially every single start of his career, I know that when he was at his best he was dominant. For a 4 year period or so he probably had a case among the best players in the world, not just goaltenders. It’s a damn shame his prime years were wasted playing behind crappy lineups. He deserves to win a Cup before he retires, that’s for sure. Bergevin did well this off-season, but I’ll never get over the complete and utter incompetence of the previous 8 years. It’s a shame that the year the Habs actually have a promising club comes when Price is no longer the same goaltender. Imagine this roster with 2014 Price? And I know it’s early still. But that would likely be a legitimate Cup contender..

I think he's the most talented goalie ever, which usually draws laughs. He's the best goalie I've seen and I've been watching since the mid-70s. Hasek was great, but Price is better. It's not always up to the player, you need a team around you too. If he was on Tampa or Boston his numbers would be ridiculous. Advanced stats for goalies are still in their infancy, but are far better than what came before. That article is a pretty good overview. It's harder to be a goalie now than it ever was- everyone can shoot the puck and the inzone tactics are so advanced, taking advantage of the new rules. I think we're going to see better and better goalies tho now that the position has evolved.
