What is your opinion? Do you think Hawerchuk was responsible defensively in Winnipeg?

I think that Hawerchuk's numbers will look worse than most of his comparables due to team factors around him.

In the 80s those front line superstar centers were expected to play "ok" defense and use their offensive talent to win games. I don't think Hawerchuk was a Doug Gilmour by any means, but none of that group of 80s centers (Savard, Stastny, Hawerchuk etc.) that tend to go as 2nd line centers were. They were a product of their time.

I don't think Roenick was anything to write home about from a purely defensive aspect at his peak, either. He competed all over the ice but he really came in at the tail end of that 80s style of center. Of course his numbers will look better on that Blackhawks team with a Vezina winning goaltender etc.

I think all of these guys became more responsible as the league shifted around them.

@Voight selects Brian Rafalski, D

Crosby just praised him heavily on Spittin Chicklets after saying Lidstrom is by far the best D he ever played against.

That is a GREAT interview. Sid is so guarded off the rink (for good reason these days) that it's very rare to see him open up, curse (yeah I had to mention that haha) and bring about a lighter side that you often don't see. I think I posted a link in the chat thread last year.

Absolutely said Lidstrom was easily the best D he ever faced but that Rafalski was quite underrated.

The exact words were "by far." This from the 5/6 best player ever.

Rafalski was such a smart player who played so well within his limitations.

Agreed. That's the impression I got watching him, especially later in his career. He didn't seem to be a guy who over extended himself that often, though some one like TDMM, who surely saw a lot more of BR, would be able to confirm with more accuracy.

I saw quite a bit of him when I lived in NY. Super solid, anticipation, skating, slick, all the things we know about him. He could be muscled, but you'd have to catch him.

I had my eye on Rafalski and Ramsay. I'll pick up my goalie here. Welcome to Portland Roy Worters (G)!

Weiland, the guy who stood by the offensive crease while play went the other way to his end, awaiting a long non-offside pass during his career scoring year when the NHL rules were patently absurd for half a season.

And, the same guy who was replaced by Barry, the Wings said to have suddenly the physical center needed to win two championships.

Have you missed the repeated posts where it was shown that Weiland put up more points after "offsides" was added in the second half of the season than he did before when there was no off-side rule?

It was a total outlier season for Weiland, but I think it should be seen as a legit one.
