Shouldn’t be much longer. Just waiting on @VanIslander to come back online. We were discussing a few options and were pretty much settled on our top player for this pick from a list of 3 or 4. Just want to make sure we’re on the same page before posting.

edit: It had been a few hours so I went ahead and posted the pick. There was some confusion between VI and I in his latest post to me but I selected the guy we came to agree was our top pick a few hours earlier.

Salt Lake selects a solid two-way player who was viewed as one of the most defensively responsible players of his day for our 4th line..C/RW, Pit Martin

809 points in 1101 career games shows he could put points on the board as well. Finished top 20 in league scoring 4 times and top 15 in playoff scoring twice. Played in 4 all-star games.

NM..

3-year peak, 7-year career.

Includes during that peak no top-5 in gials or assists (though twice those years were 5th in points - once Hart runner up), limited playoff experience but good play.

I guess he's a good 4th line/extra skater scoring line substitute in case of injury.

He IS worthy of this draft AT SOME POINT. At this point, when judgements vary so much about role and worth, his pick is unclear.

I wanted him as 4th line center for extra offense, and that's what I got him for. He's much better than Scheifele pretty much any way you look at it.

I don't see why there should be any comparison to McDavid, who is obviously better and consequently obviously playing a more important role for his team.

EDIT: Also, I don't think Jamie Benn is 400 picks better, position notwithstanding.

364th overall John Carlson
581st overall Mike Green

As a Caps fan, that seems right.

I was so angry at Green so often for his dumb risky out of position plays.

I am impressed by Carlson's timing and positioning.

I remember when someone MLD'd Green after his two early career 1st team all stars,... i berated him. I was soooo glad when he was eventually gone to Detroit.

I think if you wanted an offensive player, you could have done a lot better than a guy with a 7 season vs.x of 72.9.

He is much better than Scheifele.

I've long thought there are 4 top PP net presence specialists in the ATD - Ciccarelli, Andreychuk, Camille Henry, and...

Tim Kerr, C/RW

Kerr was a huge body who led the NHL in PP goals 3 years in a row (1985, 1986, 1987). He was a 2nd Team All Star in 1987 and won the Masterdon in 1989.

He was a fairly strong playoff performer with 40 goals in 81 career playoff games.

Swamp Devils top PP:

Tim Kerr
Vladimir Krutov - Sid Abel - Guy Lafleur
Flash Hollett

Lafleur also played a lot of point on the PP in Montreal for a more traditional setup with 2 point men.

Kerr will be buried on the 4th line at even strength where his slow skating won't be as much of a liability.

Maybe sí, maybe no. I also wanted strong goalscoring and playoff performances... and the player in question shouldn't be one I'm aiming for with my other team.

Bottom line, I think MacKinnon is 40-team ATDer by now - and as I said, he's no way 400 picks worse than Jamie Benn.

Benn is significantly better offensively, and also brings some intangibles to the table. He does that at a position that has a lot less depth than center.
Seems like there's some recency bias that comes with anyone thinking otherwise. A 3-year VsX for Benn from 2014-2016 shakes out to 97.33, and the same for 2018-2020 for Mackinnon is 94.33. Benn is of course still around and scoring like a run-of-the-mill top-six forward, so that's what we remember about him as opposed to a Markus Naslund type who isn't adding anymore mediocrity to his record. And of course, Benn has a relevant career to flesh out his record - four more seasons where he had more impact than anything else MacKinnon has.
