ATD 2017 Draft Thread II

RB is holding up the draft. :sarcasm:

It's funny how many wingers are drafted before their centermen who were considered better than them! (maybe it's a product of positioning: center is sooooooooooooo deeep in talent).

Who is this centerman? Feel free to PM me about it.

Yes, it's definitely a product of positioning. If there are two players with the same offensive prime on the board right now, and one's a center and one's a winger, the winger could be one of the five highest scoring at his position and the center could, in theory, drop to the MLD. It might look a little odd in situations where it's a center who was better than his earlier drafted winger, but that's what positional scarcity does.

That said, the specific situation you're referring to is far from cut and dried. Hay, in my opinion, had perhaps the 2nd best offensive prime of all LWs on the board when he was taken. The center you refer to is not remotely close to the best available centers at the moment (nor does he approach the record of the winger Hay). I realize he outscored Hay as his center twice (in six opportunities), and I'll have to take your word that he was considered better at that time, but I don't think there's any doubt that Hay had the overall better career, and his higher draft position is further accentuated by positional scarcity.

I'll select the player with the largest drop in terms of last year selection dropped over 100 picks this year. Rod Gilbert, RW

Funny story: I was talking to someone last year about backup plans for Vladimir Martinec in case I didn't get him, and Rod Gilbert was one of the first to come to mind. Imagine my utter shock after I realized he was already taken!

This seems to be his usual spot opposed to last year and I think he's a good fit he's a little more balanced of a scorer than I thought

Yeah that balance is part of why I liked him last year. It's a good spot for him right now, one of the better RWs left.

My plan was to just get the most talented, best offensive player for my 2nd line on my last pick, irrespective of anything else. Had I missed out on Balderis, Gilbert was the guy I'd have (happily) settled on.

Funnier story I was going to mention - last year you said to me:

"I'm really surprised you didn't say anything about the Rod Gilbert pick."

Me: "Why would I? This is a perfectly reasonable spot for him to be taken" (it was around pick #240 at that time)

You: "yes, but he went about 130 picks ago..."

Vice versa, I wanted Gilbert but would have been happy with Balderis.

 I remember that. I think your response to me was "WTF".

#1 player from our list.
3-4 players, that we had in the list AFTER him, were taken far before.
You remained the last GM before us.
And you took him!!!!!

Brockville Invincibles select Rick Middleton, RW

He's unbelievable. It's not just the goals he scores. He should be the cinch winner of the Selke Trophy for the best defensive forward
Recorded 5 consecutive 40+ goal and 90+ point seasons during his prime, twice reaching 100 points.12 times scored 20+ goals, 8 times 30+ goals,
Has 100 points in 114 career playoff games, including a monstrous 33 points in 17 games during 82-83.
"I've seen them all, and Nifty's the best one-on-one player in hockey. Take anyone in the league, give Nifty the puck, and 90% of the time he'll turn the other guy inside out."
He works the power play, kills penalties and protects late leads.

Middleton was probably the best RW one could pick right now. Not only was his offensive prime among the best by the numbers, but also there's good reason to believe he belongs a few more notches up that list because of the fact that his career was in a small arena, in the Adams division, on a defensive oriented, yet successful team.

He's also very good defensively. He's like a more spectacular Patrik Elias, even if Elias outlasted him and ultimately put together the better career.

Time now to review recent picks:

Keith Tkachuk: Good pick, should really provide on the power on a line with the smaller Gilmour and Lafleur. Should score some goals as well. Was a guy I was looking at as well.

Bill Barber: I had him in a previous draft. Very good pick, should provide some grit on a line with Beliveau and St.Louis.

Helmut Balderis: Had him last year, very good pick, should do well with Malkin.

Markus Naslund: For a while there weren't many in the NHL better than him. I see you have him on your 3rd line right now. If I where you I'd draft a bruising left winger soon to play with Dionne and Selanne. Tkachuk would have been perfect for you.

Cecil Dillon: Could be a good fit on your 2nd line with Dave Keon.

Lanny Mcdonald: Good pick, he's a warrior if there has ever been 1 in the NHL.

Herb Gardiner: Gardiner's a solid pick as well, he'll probably be one of the better 2nd pairing defensemen in this.

Bun Cook: Very good pick, have had him on my radar in previous drafts, seems like a guy who could do it all.

Roy Worters: My goalie in 2013, one of the better early goalies in the NHL and someone who should go sooner.

Woody Dumart: Had him in 2012, not the most offensive guy but if you're looking for grit and glue in your top 6 he's as good as anyone for you.

Dany Heatley: Heatley certainly went downhill towards the end of his NHL career but there was a time he was among the league's elite goal scorers. Him and Sakic could be good together.

George Hay: Decent pick, from what I've read on him he seems like a good player.

Vaclav Nedomansky: Thought about picking him when I went with Mackay, seems like a very good player.

Red Horner: Had him a few yrs. back, certainly is a very physical player.

Rod Gilbert: Was wondering when he'd go. Went to high in the past but is this to low for him?

Rick middleton: Seems like a good all around player, always great to have someone like that in your top 6.

Anyway those are my thoughts on recent picks.

Jonathan Toews
Scotty Bowman

i actually wanted to get Bowman for a change this year. Had him pencilled in with pick #290... If he was available. Didn't think he'd go this early!

Markus Naslund: For a while there weren't many in the NHL better than him. I see you have him on your 3rd line right now. If I where you I'd draft a bruising left winger soon to play with Dionne and Selanne. Tkachuk would have been perfect for you..

He knows! Don't rub it in!

Brockville Invincibles select goalie Billy Smith

Stanley Cup (1980, 1981, 1982, 1983)
Conn Smythe Trophy (1983)
First All-Star Team Goalie (1982)
Vezina Trophy (1982)
William Jennings Trophy (1983)

King Forsberg PMed

#228

This morning I woke up and was thinking about what to do with this pick. I was really leaning towards Rick Middleton. Then he got picked so I thought maybe a goalie, Billy Smith would look great. Picked.

Sooo option number3 is.... Zigmund Palffy, RW

Palffy will add some goal scoring and talent to my second line and the powerplay. He's a guy hat had to do almost everything on some awful teams. In 2003 he finished 10th in points and 8th in goals despite the next closest forward on his team only scoring 38 points. Even though he was of average size he was a star in the dead puck era.

Top 30 finishes for Palffy (30 teams, so why not?):
Points: 5th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 23rd
Goals: 5th, 5th, 8th, 15th, 15th, 20th
Assists: 13th, 18th, 19th, 28th
