Prospect Info: At 16th Overall the Rangers Select Brennan Othmann

I like Othmann but be careful. He was not very effective at ES all year for Hartford and over-relies on his shot from the dots. He's definitely physical, battles, and is a pest/will fight for teammates, but you will probably be disappointed if you want an out of the box top 6 player.

he needs to learn how to get inside for his chances and play a more effective cycle game.

I generally agree but thought towards the end of the year he started going more to the net and I saw some rebounds, deflections and close in shots. Hopefully that's a trend that will continue.

man i'm kind of off othmann but to see him put up 14+9 in the first 20 AHL games next year with good even strength production and a hard nosed ozone game would be so sick

So he's Mika?

He's not a lock to make the Rangers next year by any means. I think both Rempe and Edstrom have a much better and probably even Berard....and there are only so many players that a team is going break in in a year or at least if the team doesn't have to deal with a lot of injuries.

Othmann's play away from the puck is going to have to be better. There isn't a slot for a top 6 LW in the near future. If he manages to make the team he'll break in in the bottom 6 and a player who doesn't defend well is just a detriment. He has an edge to his game but he's not Rempe or even Cuylle or even Edstrom. It wouldn't surprise me if he plays some with the Rangers next year but my guess is he'll spend the better part of the season in Hartford.

Othmann has more balls and grit than Mika has the willingness to defend himself or a teammate. When has Mika ever did that? Mika couldn't fight out of a wet paper bag

Mika's not on the team to get into scraps. I do the think the more physical Mika plays the more effective he is but he's a proven top line center who plays all situations.....not someone you want continually going into the penalty box.

Mika was disappointing in the Florida series. The other two series he was fine. His regular season wasn't his best but the team won the league and even at not his best he was a very important player to the team's success.

To me Othmann had an okay first year pro season in Hartford. There were periods of time when his production went missing altogether. 67 games 21 goals 49 points and speaking to his defensive issues -24 the worst on the team. A lot of his production was power play production. If he makes the Rangers he won't get a lot of power play time.

We're talking anyway of two players who are at completely different stages of their careers. One is a 1st line capable NHL veteran center with size who plays in all situations. The other is a very young somewhat underweight winger trying to find his way who needs to figure out how not to hurt his team when the opposition has the puck.

So his offense is perimeter and his grit is performative? Sounds like a Ranger!

meh, i wouldn't say that. his shot is legitimately very good and unlike someone like Mika, he shoots a lot at ES. those kind of shots are good for creating rebound chances and broken plays. if I had to paint with a broad brush, that's where quite a few of his assists come from.

This is good. Watching the 2014 team, which is always my model, they got a lot of shots straight to the net.

I get that we like to hold for quality but shooting creates a lot of havoc in and of itself. It's something we don't go to when our passing is cut off.

This….
And if the guy can actually hit the net, most postseason goals are scored off the havoc….. reg season ones too.

with a great offseason training package, who knows. Kid will certainly be in the mix to make the team to start next year.
It will be a good barometer for him and how hard he should work if they decide he goes back to the A for another 1/2 or full season.

IMO, Cuylle would thrive on a line with a player like that….
He has no problem sweeping up the garbage around the net.
Kreider too for that matter

This is pretty much what I've thought since the Panarin era began. You need to establish North-South in order to open up East-West. You cannot simply default to East-West.
