He only got lit up in the only game he played the whole time. But so did his opponent. I whined a little because I was in my cups while watching the highlights. He did ok in other games where he played for a period. Other first hand reports have come out saying that he did just fine, despite the 8 goal performance and they still expect him to be the starter come Dec.

Young players will develop.

In December he could be a different player you just saw.

Gaudreau was really good at the U18s. Cossa will have to earn it. Hopefully he does just that.

Gaudreau didnt even actually get invited to summer camp for them. Theres a few others with an inside track on him. Cossa is definitely the favourite

Hmm, I had heard it was estimated to be a fight between Cossa, Gaudreau, and Lennox for the Canada WJC goalie spot. Weird for him not to get invited after how well he just played for them.

Garand is also a returning player.

If I were a betting man, its Cossa and Garand.

Ranked 4th best goalie prospect by Wheeler (The Athletic)

Askarov
Knight
Wallstedt

are the top 3 and make up a tier. Cossa starts off the next tier of goalies.

NHL top 10 goalie prospects, 2021 edition: Askarov and Knight lead Wheeler's ranking of the best drafted goalies

Don't know about goalies, but generally I dont like those Scott Wheeler lists at all.

Guy seems to be out of lunch or just a troll. Too many crazy selections on some obvious ones.

Example:

Cole Caufield 2nd best drafted prospect and Moritz Seider #11 ? :D :D :D

I think you missed us all agreeing that Scott Wheeler is an idiot in the prospect ranking thread. It may be the only time in Red Wings forum history that we unanimously agreed on anything.

I don't like most of what Wheeler does but if you asked me if Cossa was in the same tier of goalie as Knight, Askarov, and Wallstedt I would say absolutely not.

When they traded up, I was certain they were going to pick Wallstedt.

You know he's gonna be better just based on name alone. How could you not pick a goalie with the word "Wall" in his name?

Not sure if it was possible, but was there a chance for him to play overseas in Europe? I believe he needs to play at better competition (see Wallstedt) instead of against 16/17 year olds.

It's still a good development step to play like 50+ games and WJC this season.

I think Wallstedt is going to be a shadow over this pick until we know how it plays out but that is going to be years from now. Look how long it took for Cholo to finally be a consensus bust and goalies take even longer.

I am personally not letting it interfere with my excitement. Cossa had good names in draft circles putting him on the level with Wallstedt and Yzerman has shown that he does his homework. I just think its too early to worry. There is a lot riding on where this leads but strap in for the long haul.

This thread feels like it took a weird turn and brought out some ugly after his prospect camp. It's interesting how one player can bust after one day of a 15 minute elusive scrimmage.

Prior to that day, Cossa had some buzz, was considered the best goalie this draft by some, and even had an organization trade up to snag him over the other guy. But now he's a bust.

I think it's more that the people that don't like him are just much louder right now

I haven't changed my opinion of him at all but at the same time there wasn't exactly anything to get hyped about in that prospect camp either so there's just....nothing new to talk about

Well he has a 1.52GAA and .952 sv% to start the year, so we could talk about that!

I was at the prospect game he played too. He got beat in the same spot for most of the goals, just means he has a weakness to work on but his overall game was still solid. He was also clearly nervous with the way he was going behind the net inbetween plays. Regardless our CHL level defense that night hung him out to dry and let players skate right into the slot with their shot attempts. There is no need to worry.
