As of July 6th 2023 the Leafs are a better team than they were last season.

Maybe to help the team out by letting us know how much he is going to cost us. That way we can plan better for other contracts.
I’m sure they have a pretty good idea what it’s going to cost.

They would have a number in mind for all lengths.
But if it was 3 years they may try and find a number 1 centre or someone that can fill that fairly soon. Where as if it was 8 years that position would like fall to the bottom of wants or needs.

Why wouldn’t Matthews just stay after 3 years and continue in the role ?

Did Mack not signing until September stop Colorado from making moves?

Did Pasta not signing until March stop Boston from making moves?

Has Matthews not being done stopped Toronto from making moves?

No it hasn't
I’m betting none of the 2 teams you mentioned were in such a precarious cap situation as the Leafs are. All of the moves the Leafs have made so far have been 1 year deals for scrubs probably because they have no idea what Matthews or Will are going to cost the following year

How is he being prevented from filling out the roster?
It’s pretty hard to do anything meaningful when he doesn’t really know what Matthews will cost beyond next year and until he actually signs on the line there is still a slim chance it goes sideways.
The same goes for the Willy deal

He's not, but racer 88 lives in a reality that doesn't
I would argue that you live in a fantasy world where cost certainty of a major player means nothing to a teams ability to make moves based on a players future cost.
speaking of the future, if you have something negative to say about me please say it to me not another poster

Not sure if you’re being serious or having me on. You believe that the GM ‘doesn’t really know’ what these players will cost yet every Insider and message board poster does?

we only think we know. I believe the GM has an idea of what he will cost but let’s get er in writing.
In my career words mean nothing unles it’s in writing.

That goes back to my wondering why he is not signed yet. If they pretty much know how much he will cost why drag it out
There could be any number of reasons but because they aren’t moving on your time line doesn’t mean they are dragging it out.
