The price seems steep but being a RFA, if you resign him, the value is fine, especially since you are going for a cup run this season. If you don't resign him, if you consider the assets you will obtain in return during the summer, the rental will have been relatively cheap in the end. So either way, it is a great trade for the Avs. Lehky is the ideal bottom6 player on a deep team going for a cup run, one of the best forechecker out there.

Why is there concern about the Avs 2nd line for next year? Don't forget we have some dogs down with the Eagles who are over ripe and ready to roll

Bowers, Kaut, Beaucage

Much cheaper and only slight talent drop off

Uhhhhh..... Dog I'm not sure any of those guys will ever be full time NHL players. Actually if I was betting I would put money against it.

I want to see Cogliano-Sturm-LOC. I think you have to JTC with Lehkonen and Newhook at this point.

I'm curious to see how Compher will do with Lehkonen. Compher isn't a line-driver and his flaws have been spoken about here a lot, but with Lehkonen he won't be expected to drive the line which might help him a bit. Playing with an elite forechecker in Lehkonen, and Newhook who has good vision and passing, could see Compher find some success offensively as the 3rd wheel on the line. He does after all have a decent shot and is reasonably good at floating into pockets of space in the slot area (he scored a goal with a Newhook assist from behind the net like that just recently in fact).

Yea..those are career AHL’ers.

Maybe a mediocre 4th liner in their somewhere if we’re lucky.

Hasn't he played with nuke a fair amount? That didn't seem to drive his offense.

Dont think the price was steep at all. Barron is a solid prospect but not a top tier guy either. Depending on who you ask from the Avs, he was passed on our defensive depth charts by 2 other prospects this year in Helleson and Behrens(Personally I had Helleson ahead of him but Behrens still below).

He's got the upside to be a good 3/4 Dman but still has some question marks around his defensive game and whether his skating will be as big of a plus at the NHL level. And the 2nd round pick, while being a 2nd round pick also isn't until 2024. I think the value was pretty good for the Avs actually. They didn't give up a 1st round pick which is a big win.

Now in saying that, I think Montreal has to be reasonably happy with the deal as well. Lehkonen likely is a part of Montreal's future and they got a guy back that very well could be in Barron. The draft pick is far away so who knows what the Avs will look like in that 2024 season.

I'm assuming sarcasm but ahhhh, there's a massive talent drop off from those 3 prospects, and the guys we have playing on our 2nd line right now.

Bowers and Kaut might arguably be a bit overripe, but neither has really showed enough to earn an NHL job at this point.

Beaucage still has at least 2 years to go before he can even be considered for the NHL. His skating needs a lot of work.

Yes you're right he did play with Nichuskin a bit in the Dallas series if I remember right. He was the center on the line though and the other winger was one of Donskoi or Namestnikov, neither of who have the raw talent that Newhook does.

Maybe i was a bit to optimistic about Compher in my post. Realistically he'll do what he does to all lines and end up on the 4th line again. A line of Lehkonen-Sturm-Newhook could be quite interesting as well.

If Newhook and Lehkonen will be paired I imagine JTC on the RW, not Sturm (who is a prototypical center).

Kaut has the talent to play in the nhl, he just doesn't have the playstyle for a bottom six role. maybe I could see him finding a spot somewhere, idk.
Definitely agree on this. If he is still here next year you have to take a few games and stick him on the second line and see what he can do. He isn't a grinder for the bottom 6. Doesn't work then ship him out.

Bottom 6 has improved
Become harder to play against
Mentor for Newy
People wanted bottom 6 addressed , and we have THREE new players there.
Lost no current NHL'ers besides Josty
Love that Habs / Ducks are paying for our players by munching cap

I absolutely love what we've done. We were specials for the Cup before this. We are WAY over the top now. We have so much grit now to lean on when required.

We are ridiculous talent wise.

I don't think he's skilled enough for the top 6. When I see him my thought is that his talent level is just...average. At pretty much everything. To me his skill level is very Colin Wilson. Which is fine, but his playstyle doesn't fit that skill set at all. At this point his playstyle isn't going to change, maybe another team can get more out of him.

I have a feeling Bowers' dad leaked his name as trade bait, and Sakic didn't trade him to make them suffer.

I like this deal a lot. For what the Avs gave up, it feels a lot better to get an RFA than it would to get a couple months of a UFA. And Lehkonen seems to be exactly what they need. Joe showed an eye for the present and the future. Good work here.

I love this deal. Super pumped about it. Sleepy probably set his alarm for like 5 minutes before the deadline.

Hi guys, just wanted to come in and say that I'm glad that Lehkonen ended up with the Avalanche, a team with a legitimate shot at making a long run in the playoffs. Of course, Lehkonen should also help with that goal.

I'm very sad to see him go. I am a big fan of his; I always defended him when fans tried to scapegoat him. I was on the road all day, so I don't know the perception of the fans on trade, but you guys receive a very good player. One that is very disciplined, never takes a shift off and that is relentless on the forecheck; he's a very tiring opponent for any defenseman.

Again, I'm super sad to see him go. I wish we had not traded him. I had no allegiance for the playoffs this year, but it now lies with the Avalanche and Lehkonen. Last year, he scored the biggest goal I've had the chance to witness for the Habs as I was 3 in 1993. I hope that he scores that goal for you guys too.

As a fan, it truly sucks. But I'm happy for him. I'm sure he'll thrive with your team.

Cheers everyone 🍻

Also don't forget guys, at some point in the future , we are going to need a top 6 spot for OO. And Newhook.

What a huge get for the bottom 6 though, and with term, and RFA, and at half his cap hit hahaha.
