I often joked that the brass would try to sign whoever was on the cover of the EA NHL game whenever they became a free agent.

Yeah what people ignore when talking about how the Rangers failed to buy a cup pre cap was that even back then, elite prime players didn’t become free agents. Best chance we had was Sakic offer sheet but Colorado matched.

The hard cap was the best thing for the Rangers. It forced their hand to draft well and develop players. We did try to make signings, but we've been smarter lately.

No. That is not possible. He is not a Captain type of player. It would be like giving Leetch the C ahead of Graves.

Two of those three guys were established on the team and already captain before the other guy got there or did anything of note and the third is one who had known maturity issues. So while true these examples are rather weird. It’s happened in LA and SJ but it’s pretty rare for teams to strip the captaincy from someone to give it to someone else while they’re all still on the team.

Panarin will not be a captain. I've met him a couple times, he's a shy-ish kind of guy and his English isn't strong enough to do those 'Captain things', and I don't think he wants that responsibility.

Zibanejad will pretty obviously be the next captain of the New York Rangers. His personality, culture and even the way he plays the game is better suited for it.

Whether he's a captain or not (I'm in the camp that thinks not), Panarin does seem to have some leadership qualities. He's able to pick up the team through his actions.

The accuracy on his shot is just insane. So many of those are tucked so, so close to the post or right under the crossbar. It's really something.

I honestly haven't seen anyone at this level as a Ranger. Jagr, had a different style but as far as skill and talent goes, Breadman takes it

It's mind boggling to me that a player like him is on his third NHL team. I know the Hawks had cap issues but when you have someone like this you do whatever it takes to clear the decks and lock him up for the rest of his career.

I’m proud to say I was a strong proponent of signing Panarin & vehemently opposed to Trouba

To be honest, Trouba is the guy best suited as Captain material. Panarin, Zib, Byfield!!! as the "A"s.
