Hm. I don't think you "gift" them "prime" ice time. That's a non-starter.
But the bottom line is that a guy like Tomasino produced ~0.5 ppg with 4th line icetime, and others like Svechkov and Novak and Evangelista and (long ago) Parssinen put up some solid numbers too. Not with gifted ice time. But rather with
repressed ice time.
It just never went anywhere after that. That's the problem. Young guys DID step up and produce in limited opportunity. But then were treated as if they
didn't produce, and were relegated in favor of AHL tweener/grinders.
I think the central dichotomy here is that we're asking for the impossible. Our kids aren't Sidney Crosby. We aren't drafting #1 OA. If they are outproducing our filler AHL guys, then yes, that's worthy of elevated utilization. But instead of elevated utilization, our kids get relegated/cast aside.
I don't see any real avenue for apologizing for management's approach here. They have f'ed up across the board. And seem quite content to continue to doing so?
